Janis Joplin (3’24)Compositional Notes I met Cuban-American Silvia Curbelo when we were both artists in residency at the Seaside Institute. When she shared a few of her poems I was immediately taken by the melodic flow of her words, the imagery and her strong delivery. W. S. Merwin has describe her work as …accomplished, daring, full of intelligence; it is the generous first manifestation of an authentic and original gift. This second set of songs from The Secret History of Water was composed for one of my private voice students, a coloratura soprano with excellent pitch retention and a secure range extension. I’m in love, I’m floating is a whimsical poem that captures the essence of being in love, acting foolishly and impulsively, yet somehow grounded in the knowledge that she is still capable of counting her options like black sheep. Last Call is my musical interpretation of Curbelo’s enigmatic poem contemplating different personalities in a bar. In the third song, Janis Joplin, here is another whimsical, yet deeply touching poem with nostalgia as the key component.I loved including a quote from Me and Bobby McGee. It has been performed by church choirs, professional choirs and amateur choirs, as well as university choirs.I was very fortunate to have Anders Paulsson believe in the beauty and significance of Feet of Jesus. He promoted it in Sweden and returned to the United States to perform it in San Francisco. In May of 1997, the Saint Jacobs Chamber Choir under the direction of Gary Graden recorded Feet of Jesus, along with some other original works by Anders Paulsson and arrangements of spirituals. I requested that the soloists be African-Americans, Marymal Holmes and John Williams. The cross-cultural exchange was a vibrant one and proved to be enlightening. The very idea of what was truly considered spiritual in music was put to the question and answered admirably by Gary Graden and his marvelous Swedish choir. The BIS Northern Lights CD was released under the title Spirituals.

The iconic Italian songs have served as the foundation for countless singers for over a hundred years. My settings are an accessible alternative and will provide teachers with new tools for their students’ technical and musical advancement. They offer a welcome change both melodically and harmonically and many have a limited range with a comfortable tessitura. Most of the songs are brief, lasting around two minutes. Another attractive feature is the inclusion of a literal English translation directly above the Italian. I believe these songs will be successful for auditions and in recital settings, both informal and formal. My hope is that over time, these 24 Italian Songs and Arias for 21st Century Singers will take their place beside the originals for the establishment of a solid vocal technique.

It is a mostly humorous piece aimed at entertaining the audience and the members of the orchestra. I also intended it to be a suitable companion to the Rossini Introduction, Theme and Variations, also featured on the Jacksonville Symphony's 2014-15 season opener. Keenly aware of Peter's fine soloistic abilities I approached organization of the work around quotations from well known clarinet solos. Published by Judith Cloud (A0.981218). Composer’s Notes In my parents' library there was an assortment of very old books that I used to leaf through while home for holidays. One of these, The Ladies' Wreath, was of special interest. The inscription inside the front cover read To Miss Sophia Venable by her friend William M. Duphuy, April 25, 1850. Within the collection of romantic short stories and poems was The Poet's Pen from the Greek didactic poet Menecrates. Here was something very different from the overly sentimental offerings in most of the volume. I imagined the solitary lady reading this would feel most exhilarated and even empowered. Ideas for setting the poem came almost immediately, with the oboe as a key figure. Having experimented with a choral setting, I settled on tenor, oboe and piano and in 1989 the piece was completed. I revised The Poet’s Pen in 2016. The Poet's Pen I was a useless reed; no cluster hungMy brow with purple grapes; no blossom flungThe coronet of crimson on my stem;No apple blushed upon me, nor (the gemof flowers) the violet strewed the yellow heathAround my feet; nor jessamine's sweet wreathRobed me in silver: day and night I pinedOn the lone moor, and shivered in the wind.At length a poet found me. My settings are an accessible alternative and will provide teachers with new tools for their students’ technical and musical advancement. They offer a welcome change both melodically and harmonically and many have a limited range with a comfortable tessitura. Most of the songs are brief, lasting around two minutes. Another attractive feature is the inclusion of a literal English translation directly above the Italian. I believe these songs will be successful for auditions and in recital settings, both informal and formal. My hope is that over time, these 24 Italian Songs and Arias for 21st Century Singers will take their place beside the originals for the establishment of a solid vocal technique.

The origin of the hymn tune SLANE is an Irish folk song called The Banks of the Bann. It first appeared in the old Irish Church Hymnal of 1919.2. Aunt Nancy’s DanceI wanted to include something whimsical for friends and colleagues, Wildy Zumwalt, Cindy Gould and Nancy Sullivan. The result was this second movement, dedicated to Aunt Nancy.3. Fantasy on an Old Negro SpiritualI found this tune in a book of spirituals, many of which were completely unknown to me. The melody is very simple, as are the words. A recording of the spiritual can be found in the Smithsonian archives.
