Arranged standard brass quintet Mozart's textual inspiration is apparent in the Tuba mirum (Hark, the trumpet) movement, which is introduced with a sequence of three notes in arpeggio, played in B♠major by a solo tenor trombone, unaccompanied, in accordance with the usual German translation of the Latin tuba, Posaune (trombone). Two measures later, the bass soloist enters, imitating the same theme. At m. 7, there is a fermata, the only point in all the work at which a solo cadence occurs. The final quarter notes of the bass soloist herald the arrival of the tenor, followed by the alto and soprano in dramatic fashion. On the text Cum vix justus sit securus (When only barely may the just one be secure), there is a switch to a homophonic segment sung by the quartet at the same time, articulating, without accompaniment, the cum and vix on the strong (1st and 3rd), then on the weak (2nd and 4th) beats, with the violins and continuo responding each time; this interruption (which one may interpret as the interruption preceding the Last Judgment) is heard sotto voce, forte and then piano to bring the movement finally into a crescendo into a perfect cadence. My arrangement gives the trombone part to the horn, and the vocal entries are given to the trombone, horn and two trumpets. . Section III of the requiem is titled “Sequenz†(sequentia or sequence). It is made up of the following pieces I have arrangements of all of them, for varying types of ensemble * Dies irae * Tuba mirum * Rex tremendae * Recordare * Confutatis * Lacrymosa. I have also arranged Mozarts Motet “Ave Verum Corpus†K618.

Scottish, Air and Waltz (6/8 or 3/4 time). The antiquarian William Chappell claims the tune is English on the strength of its being included in a Collection of English Songs by Dale (who published about 1780-1794) under the title Lost is my quiet. However, the collector John Glen (1891) relates a delightful story of the tune's origins involving the famous Scots poet, Robert Burns (1759-1796), who wrote to publisher George Thomson in 1794:Do you known the history of the air? It is curious enough. A good many years ago, Mr. James Miller, writer in your good own (Edinburgh), a gentleman whom, possibly, you know, was in company with our good friend Clarke; and taling of Scottish music, Miller expressed an ardent ambition to be able to compose a Scots air. Mr. Clarke, partly by way of a joke, told him to keep to the black keys of the harpsichord, and preserve some kind of rhythm, and he would infallibly compose a Scots air. Certain it is, that, in a few days, Mr. Miller produced the rudiments of an air which Mr. Clarke, with some touches and corrections, fashioned into the tune in question. Ritson, you know, has the same story of the black keys; but this account which I have just given you, Mr. Clarke informed me of several years ago.Miller's tune was first published under the title Caledonian Hunt's Delight (The) in Gow's 2nd Collection (1788), but Glen concludes that it is more likely that Lost is my quiet is a poor adaptation and nothing else. He also notes there is a tune having a supposed resemblance in Playford's Appollo's Banquet (1690) entitled Scotch Tune (A) (No. 68), but in the end he believes that neither Chappell's arguments nor facts are strong enough to deprive Mr. Miller of his claim. The Caledonian Hunt's Delight appears also in George Thomson's A Select Collection of Original Scottish Airs for the Voice (Edinburgh, 1793-1797), arranged by Kozeluch. A rondo on the air was composed by Domenico Corri (1746-1825) under the title Favourite Irish Air (which, of course, it is not).

Even those unfamiliar with the German originals will I hope be able to enjoy the holiday season spirit conveyed with the obligatory sleigh bells!Percussion is optional apart from the sleigh bells (which are cued in the Drums part).Solos are indicated in 1st Alto Saxophone, 1st Tenor Saxophone, 2nd Trumpet, 2nd Trombone, Guitar, and PianoAt the end of the piece, let the bass, piano, and guitar sounds simply decay until just the sleigh bells are left, as the player walks off stage. Many listeners will be unfamiliar with the almost recitative-style opening that follows the four-measure intro. So when the well-known tune is finally heard at measure 23, some at least will be pleasantly surprised. But don’t decorate the melody too much here; just enjoy it as it is, let that warm trombone sound shine through! The 2nd trombone can decorate the melody a little more from measure 31 onward, but don’t let any swing feeling creep in before measure 38. You may wish to speed up a bit more than I have indicated at measures 47 and 62, but don’t play the swing sections too fast – this is not an up-tempo version. Just strengthen the swing feeling a little each time. This piece will test your quartet’s ability to play an easy swing really tight – especially when the melody is being pulled around, the lead player is playing a little behind the beat. As is usual with my arrangements, every player has the lead at some point, and maybe the chance to introduce a few of their own ideas. This arrangement gives you plenty of opportunity to exploit those all-important trombone characteristics: slide vibrato, bends, and smears, but above all, a warm sound!Listen to a full-length licensed recording on SoundCloud:
