Borodin's String Trio in G minor dates from 1855, one of his early works for 2 Violins and Cello. It is based on the once well-known Russian folk song Chem tebya ya ogorchila (What have I done to hurt you?). The music is about 7 minutes in length in one movement with the lovely bitter-sweet theme and eight variations.
The Trio in G minor was largely forgotten until the mid 20th Century. Justin Chiang's lovely arrangement for Brass Quintet for advanced performers works exceptionally well.
Instrumentation is for 2 Trumpets in C, Horn, Trombone, and Tuba.

The Seasons, Op. 37 is a set of twelve short character pieces written on commission in 1875 for solo piano, based on a month of the year in Russia. Here are the words poet Vasily Zhukovsky used to describe this music Once upon a Christmas night the girls were telling fortunes: taking their slippers off their feet and throwing them out of the gate. A true work of genius that was first published in 1741 for harpsichord. The Aria a Sarabande about 5 minutes in length in 3/4 is the very first movement of the 30 variation work and is heavily ornamented. Justin Chiang has doubled the time to 6/4 and written out all of the ornaments, making the performance possibilities much more practical. This work is appropriate for advanced performers for the following instruments: 2 Trumpets in C, Horn in F, Trombone and Tuba (Bass Trombone).
