First trumpet ascends to written D above high C. There is a short fugal section featuring the trumpets and organ. SATB choir sings a stanza acapella followed by choir, congregation, trumpets, and organ on the final verse.

Performance time is about five minutes and fifty seconds, using the suggested tempo markings. The introduction includes a cadenza for the two trumpet players. Ranges are reasonable, except for the trumpet I part which has a written D above high C in the cadenza. The French Horn part has several instances of high staff tessitura and ascends to Bb and B above the staff a couple of times. The following keys are featured: c minor, C Major, Eb Major, Bb Major. There are also excursions to modal harmonies and juxtapositions of various hemiola-type rhythmic patterns. Trumpet, French Horn, and trombone performers must be able to employ multiple tonguing; and all players must demonstrate bravura playing as well as a delicate waltz style.
