Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1290984). This is a rich and powerful setting of a familiar nativity story. The main theme is in 5/4 time (which is easier to read than some singers might imagine) and an extended middle section is in 3/2 and later 3/4. Although the piece is tonal, there’s some chromatic writing making this setting appropriate for more experienced groups of singers. The anthem contains a short a cappella section. The SAT voicing makes this arrangement suitable for competent high school or college choirs that have no bass singers. There is a short divisi section in the Soprano part. Voice ranges are as follows: Soprano D4-G5; Alto B3-D5; Tenor D3-F4.The piano part is of moderate difficulty but could be handled by any competent pianist. The anthem would make an excellent addition to any Christmas concert, Christmas service or Nativity event. Though certain details are sketchy depending on the historical source, the events depicted in the poetic text seem consistent with most sources. The text, taken from the writings of Ælfric of Eynsham and adapted by Frances E. F. Ward is as follows: The Danes came by great fleet of ship, under Hingwar, to plunder the Angles’ coast. Edmund the King will never bow in life unless first Hingwar bow to Christ, he said. He stood in hall raising no sword. Bound to the tree he called on Christ. Mad with rage, they bristled him with arrows and still with steadfast faith he called on Jesus Christ. Hingwar’s order, and the blow beheaded him; his soul departed joyfully to Christ. He studied composition at the Royal College of Music in London under Hubert Parry and Frederick Bridge. Ager served as the organist and choirmaster at St. Andrew's Church in Birmingham for over 50 years. Ager also became Professor of Organ & Harmony at the Birmingham and Midland Institute School of Music (the predecessor of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire) for nearly four decades. Although not as well-known as some of his contemporaries, Ager's music, including a variety of songs, choral, piano, and organ works, is worth exploring for those interested in late 19th and early 20th-century music. Perhaps his most famous composition is The Legend of St. Christopher, a cantata based on the medieval legend. Rejoicing is a beautiful hymn for SATB choir, which would be perfect for any number of concerts, festal days and services, such as Easter, Harvest, Earth Day, or for any suitable occasion. This is a tuneful and attractive setting which looks at the town of Bethlehem through the eyes of travelers who are going to see the child Jesus. The main melody is set is 8/8 time which easily divides into groups of three, two and three. It’s scored for SATB choir with keyboard accompaniment and would be ideal of high school, college or community choirs. There are opportunities for optional solos in the piece and the piano part is of medium difficulty. It would be ideal for a nativity play or part of a Christmas service or Christmas concert. The vocal ranges are as follows: Soprano C4 - G5; Alto: A3 - D5; Tenor: C3 - F4 and Bass F2 - F3.
