Piano Quartet - Level 1 - SKU: A0.548646 Composed by Wade. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas. 8 pages. Jmsgu3 #3407471. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548646). O Come, All Ye Faithful The traditional Adeste Fideles was arranged for a piano quartet ( piano, violin, viola & cello) featuring a thought-provoking re-harmonized final verse. O Come, All Ye Faithful is an English translation of the Latin Christmas carol Adeste Fideles. No one knows exactly who wrote it. One theory holds that King John IV of Portugal (1604–1656) wrote it. Another view says John F. Wade or John Reading wrote it. Nowadays, we usually attribute it to John Wade. It seems like Stonyhurst College in Lancashire owns the oldest manuscript. It is from the year 1751. Nevertheless, the O Come All Ye Faithful: Piano Quartet version has a re-harmonized final verse for more energy and drive. Lyrics Frederick Oakeley, a Catholic priest in 1841, wrote the English translation. This translation is probably the most common in English-speaking states. To begin with, the hymn had only four verses. Later, the verses grew to eight. Music directors often cut various verses because otherwise, the song goes too long. Some believe that St. Bonaventure wrote the first Latin lyrics. Others hold that King John IV of Portugal is responsible. Yet even others think the Cistercian monks wrote them. King John IV His subjects called King John IV of Portugal The Musician King. He became king in 1640. In addition to performing the duties of a king, he composed and wrote as a music journalist. King John built an extensive music library. Unfortunately, the massive earthquake in Lisbon ruined the library in 1755. In addition to making his library, the king started a Music School that produced many accomplished musicians. The king also worked diligently to get instrumental music approved by the Vatican for use in his churches. Aside from his authorship of Adeste Fideles, he is famous for another popular choral setting of the Crux Fidelis, a prevalent Lenten hymn. Performance in Context Verses are sometimes left out because all eight verses would take too long to perform. More to the point, though, some of the poems may be unsuitable for whatever church calendar they are intended. The eighth verse deals with the Epiphany, so it makes sense to sing this on Epiphany Sunday but not on other Sundays. Similarly, poems are used for whether the event is Midnight Mass or regular daytime Mass. Â

Published by Salvador Rojo-Gamon (A0.962406). Four ForcesReviewsScherzohttps://scherzo.es/badajoz-vanguardias-lugarenas/Periodico Extremadurahttps://www.elperiodicoextremadura.com/noticias/badajoz/fuerzas_1214372.html NotesThis work was commissioned by Extremadura Orchestra for Percussion and Chamber orchestra. It has two movements. The first one has been done for mallets and the second one was built on a base of a drums work (GEA).The duration of those movements is 26 minutes, being around 11 minutes the first and 15 minutes the second one.The chamber music is formed by:Woodwind quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn & Bassoon)Brasswind quintet (Trumpet 1, Trumpet 2, Horn, Trombone & Tuba)Strings orchestraThree firsts violinsThree seconds violinsThree violasTwo cellosFor the second movement is high recommendable to enlarge the strings, a good number of musician could be doubling.I. Strong ForcesThe work is inspired by the four fundamental forces of nature. These forces explain any phenomena which can be produced in the universe.Throughout all composition, it is latent the mathematic construction based in the series Fibonacci. In the first of the movements, Fibonacci's series is present in the notes' sequence that forms the series of 16 sounds and it is going to be present throughout the whole work. This series is taking form along the movement and it is getting melody and harmony.Although it is far away from the sonata form, as we know it in its period of highest glory, it takes elements of it and updates to our days. In this movement, we can find sonata form elements as the exposition, development, transitions or coda. The central part of the first movement becomes in the slow movement, being more intimate and lyrical, free of the serials ties although it uses resources before cited -now called common practice-.The movement finish with a short re-exposition that concludes with the virtuosic of the soloist doubling the series and adding more tension until conforming the series in its full whole.II. Weak ForcesIt is the most tribal of both movements. Its structure is more complex and in it, we also can find clear reminiscences to the sonata form.We can divide the movement into two big blocks. The first one is formed for the introduction and sections one and two.IntroducciónIt is based in one ostinato of three notes where the accent is changing provoking unsymmetric, this ostinato represents the nucleus of our existence. The piccolo and the trombone introduce us to the human element representing the two elements that form the development of the whole movement. The two elements of thematics are taken from the series, the first one is easily recognizable because it appears in his primary form.First section & cadenzaIn this movement, the rhythm, the melody, and the harmony are based on the sequence of Fibonacci. Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1489487). One of my last assignments as an Air Force musician before being stationed in Japan was to perform music in support of the 50th commemoration of what has become known in America as “Vietnam Memorial Day.” It is observed on March 29 every year, the date when the last U.S. troops withdrew from Vietnam in 1973. After the memorable ceremony in 2023, I lingered to talk with those mature veterans and to hear some of their experiences. It was a strange feeling when I told them that my first assignment at my new duty station in Japan would be a series of cultural exchange performances in Vietnam. What a somber generational bridge.I was only in Japan for a matter of days, including some intense rehearsals, before Pacific Brass (the brass quintet from the U.S. Air Force Band of the Pacific) packed up and headed to Hanoi to start our brief musical outreach in three cities. My reflections were sobering as I contrasted my military service in Vietnam with the veterans whom I had just honored three months prior. During some off-duty time, all five of the Pacific Brass military musicians found our way to the well-known Hòa Ló Prison, infamously known as the “Hanoi Hilton.” Indeed, how vastly different was my brief military service in Vietnam! To the Vietnamese people, the “American War,” as they call it, is ancient history. They are extremely forward-thinking, putting those dark years far from them, looking to the bright future that is theirs. What an educational bridge of paradigms. Although it was important for us as U.S. Servicemembers to witness the Hòa Ló Prison firsthand, our lot was to experience the beautiful present-day Vietnam with its rich culture of food, street shops, temples, dance, music, and other wonders that awed us all—including gongs! Our trombone player purchased a gong in a shop that sold little else besides gongs of all sizes and pitches. That struck me as quintessentially Vietnamese, and the sights and sounds of that modest shop lingered in my imagination. As we absorbed the extraordinary majesty of the Temple of Literature in Hanoi, ideas for this musical composition started to formulate as a bridge connecting American musical culture with Vietnamese traditional gongs. For practicality in both notation and live performance, I scored the consort of 18 glorious “gongs” in my head for orchestral tubular bells. It is a passionate hope that someday in a video presentation, a masterful cultural bridge of the two diverse countries will be crafted. Better yet, what an experience it would be to have a legitimate gong consort perform live with Pacific Brass! The year of our visit, as we were coached many times by the Embassy’s Attaché, was a milestone landmark between the two nations, worthy of praise and celebration: the ten-year anniversary of the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership, signed by Presidents Obama and Sang in July 2013. This bilateral relationship has bridged both nations’ commitment to economic engagement, cultural exchange, tourism, education, and human rights. This composition is in celebration of this Comprehensive Partnership and a gift to the wonderful people of Vietnam. May this music contribute to a continuing growth of positive relations bridging the two nations.

Full Orchestra - Level 4 - SKU: A0.869295 Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Baroque,Classical,Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 149 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #431379. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869295). Instrumentation: 3222-4231-timp-2perc-hp-chorus-strings Program note:It has been a wonderful two years of thinking, learning and working on my Continental Harmony Project with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. It is a rare occasion that a composer in the 21st century would receive a commission to write a musical work of such scale: a 40-minute piece for symphony orchestra, 200-plus chorus and a ballet company. At the Bangor Public Library I found some wonderful evocative 19th century texts for the chorus about the city of Bangor and its environs: the Penobscot River, Mt. Ktaadn, the logging industry, the native American culture, etc. At times I felt overwhelmed, but most of the times I was exuberant and quite inspired by the music that came forth in the process. The premiere is less than a month away, and I am looking forward to it. Susan Jonason, Executive Director of the Bangor Symphony, has made the occasion a very public one: a free concert on a Saturday evening! I hope the audience will go home humming the tunes from the work as they walk into the crisp, cool Bangor night.Formally the work is in five movements. The first, third and fifth movements are choral, and the two in between are orchestral. In the premiere, the Robinson Ballet will dance in the orchestral movements. The first movement is about the Penobscot River from winter to spring. The melting of the ice is a harbinger of things to come: warmer weather, for instance; but it has also contributed to a lot of flooding in the city of Bangor and its surroundings. The second movement is a waltz, a grand 19th century ballroom waltz for the ladies of the rich lumber barons. They come to the ball showing off their latest hats and gowns from London, Paris and Milan. The third movement is about the woods and the people who work in them. Thoreau’s text about Mt. Ktaadn is full of awesome thoughts about how nature is beautiful, yet unkind to man. It is followed by a J.G. Whittier lyric entitled The Logger’s Boast. The original song had twenty stanzas to it. I whittled it down to five. I don’t know what the original song sounded like, so I made up my own version of a lumberjack’s drinking song. The fourth movement is a wild, drunken polka. After a long week of working in the woods the lumbermen come back to the city and spend all their earnings on booze, women and gambling. And they dance the night away …The last movement begins with a funeral march for Joe Attien, a native American who was Thoreau’s guide when he came up here in the 1900’s. The work ends with a rousing march, a centennial hymn to the city of Bangor. God bless our city Bangor, now! On this its birthday morn …NB: The two ballet movements, II. La Valse and IV. Drunken Polka, are optional.

Twenty-three sacred hymns and songs From the Foreword: Recent years have seen much increase in the activities of small and medium sized instrumental ensembles in schools at all grade levels, generally as an adjunct of band and orchestral programs. Many churches and Sunday Schools also use ensembles of various types in programs and services. Such groups are looking for playable music that is also interesting and worthwhile. This collection contains settings of sacred hymns and songs, and other selections, all of which should be usable in the church and the school. The hymn and song treatments are not just instrumentations of standard hymnal type, but are complete arrangements, using such devices as introductions, bridges, reharmonizations in present day idioms, rhythmic variety, countermelodies, etc. All selections have been scored for a six (or five) part brass ensemble with the following part books available: (preferred instruments are listed before the parenthetical substitution possibilities) Part 1: C Instruments (Violin, Oboe, Flute); 1st Bb Trumpet or Cornet (Bb Clarinet) Part 2: 2nd Bb Trumpet or Cornet (Bb Clarinet) Part 3: 3rd Bb Trumpet or Cornet (Bb Clarinet); F Horn (English Horn); Eb Horn (Alto Saxophone, Eb Alto Clarinet) Part 4: Baritone treble clef (Tenor Saxophone, Bass Clarinet); Trombone (Baritone bass clef, Bassoon, Cello) Part 5: Baritone bass clef (Trombone, Bassoon, Cello) Part 6: Tuba or Sousaphone (Bassoon or Cello with occasional lower range limits, String Bass 8vb) While hoping to keep the selections interesting and worthwhile for experienced players, they have generally been restricted to a medium level of difficulty (or Grade III as defined by the Instrumentalist Magazine). Extremes of range and key signature have been avoided, lead parts have ample time to rest and catch their breath and technical demands are usually modest. Selections which could have been expanded to larger proportions (such as A Mighty Fortress) have been held to a modest length, in order to give younger musicians a better chance to play them successfully. Footnotes in the conductor's score indicate how the longer medleys can be abbreviated, if that is desirable. WESLEY HANSON

Cello,Piano - Level 1 - SKU: A0.548509 Composed by Wade. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christian,Christmas. Score and part. 4 pages. Jmsgu3 #3388103. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548509). O Come All Ye Faithful arranged with new harmony for the final verse. Score: 3 pages, part: 1 page. O Come, All Ye Faithful O Come, All Ye Faithful is an English translation of the Latin Christmas carol Adeste Fideles. No one knows exactly who wrote it, but one theory is that it was originally composed by King John IV of Portugal (1604–1656) and revised by John F. Wade and John Reading. Nowadays, we usually attribute it to John Wade. The oldest manuscript from 1751, is owned by Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. Lyrics The English translation O Come, All Ye Faithful was certainly written by Frederick Oakeley, a Catholic priest in 1841. This translation is the most common in English speaking states. To begin with, the hymn had only four verses. Later, the verses grew to eight. Often, various verses are omitted because otherwise, the song is just too long. Some believe the first Latin lyrics were written by St. Bonaventure (13th century) or King John IV of Portugal in the 17th. Though others think it was written by the Cistercian monks. King John IV King John IV of Portugal was called The Musician King. He became king in 1640. In addition to performing the duties of a king, he was also a composer and music journalist. King John built a very large music library. Unfortunately, the library was ruined in 1755 because of the massive earthquake of Lisbon. In addition to his library, the king started a Music School that produced many accomplished musicians. The king also worked diligently to get instrumental music approved by the Vatican for use in his churches. Aside from his authorship of Adeste Fideles, he is famous for another popular choral setting of the Crux Fidelis, a prevalent Lenten hymn. Performance in Context As mentioned above, verses are sometimes left out because all eight verses would take too long to perform. More to the point though, some of the verses may be unsuitable for whatever of the church calendar they are intended. The eighth verse deals with the Epiphany, so it makes sense to sing this on Epiphany Sunday, but not other Sundays. Similarly, other verses are used according to whether the event is Midnight Mass or regular daytime Mass. Register for free lifetime updates and revisions at www.jamesguthrie.com
