German.Auch wenn Moritz Hauptmann (1792–1868) von Hause aus eigentlich Geiger war, komponierte der Schüler (und spätere Freund) von Louis Spohr hauptsächlich Vokalmusik. Auf Empfehlung Mendelssohn Bartholdys wurde der Dresdner 1842 Thomaskantor und Musikdirektor in Leipzig. Dessen Werk sollte auch stilistisches Vorbild für Moritz Hauptmann werden. Um 1865 schrieb er eine Sammlung von „6 Liedern für 4-stimmigen Männerchor“, op. 55 (nach Texten aus Friedrich Osers „Naturliedern“), die in einer zeitgenössischen Besprechung als „schöne Lieder, die doch einmal aus voller Brust erklingen und dem Männerchor natürlich und geistig entsprechen“ gelobt wurden. Sie leben von einer klassizistisch-romantischen Tonsprache, sind fasslich und sangbar gesetzt – ein Leckerbissen für jeden Männerchor. Die „Abendruhe“ steht an vierter Stelle des Zyklus. Es ist ein ruhiger und getragener Satz, stimmungsvoll und harmonisch reizvoll.

Difficulty: Intermediate (Grade 3)Appropriate for schools and students. ‘Charles McCreerys beautifully melodic, intricately textured compositions are infused with classical, romantic and folk idioms.’ - Samantha Gillogly, violinist Charles McCreery was educated at Eton and New College, Oxford. While at Eton he won the Rowe Cup for junior pianists, and in his final year performed Weber's Konzertstück with a chamber orchestra. As an undergraduate he studied piano with Hilda Bor, and won a piano class, adjudicated by Herbert Howells, at the Willesden Music Festival. From 1988 to 1991 he held a Perrott Warrick Studentship from Trinity College, Cambridge, and he has a doctorate from Oxford University. From 1996 to 2000 he was a College Lecturer at Magdalen College, Oxford. In 1996 Charles McCreery's 'Elegy for Violin and Piano' was shortlisted for the Match Composition Prize. A comment on Charles McCreery’s collection of Tolkien songs: ‘For those who only know Tolkien via the recent blood-and-thunder films, this song-cycle by Charles McCreery will give a very different angle on the classic saga. Here we find a gentle and ethereal world, where rhythms lilt and words echo. Written during Schumann's most prolific period in 1849, it is a marvelous showpiece for Trombone quartet & Piano and unsurpassed for its sheer excitement. Each performer needs to be at the top of their game, but the rewards are well worth the effort. The 3-movement work of almost 20 minutes in length is a joy to perform and to listen to. Recommended for advanced performers.
