Il cielo dietro il monte was composed in 2011 in Maccagno, Italy, as part of the soundSCAPE Festival's Fresh Ink project in collaboration with the Civico Museo Parisi-Valle. The piece shares the title of the work that inspired it, a painting by Maria Clara Quarenghi. Il cielo dietro il monte, or the sky behind the mountains, is a beautiful composition of blues and greens, light and dark. The twin guitars form a delicate texture of quiet harmonics to complement the subtlety of the painting.Il cielo dietro il monte was composed for Andy Booth and Declan Zapala.Learn more about me and my music at www.penguinmanmusic.com

Flicker is a varied and playful work for solo bass clarinet composed for Calvin Falwell. The piece provides the larger clarinet with a degree of lightness perhaps more characteristic of its smaller brethren, with sections of agile flourishes, pointillistic staccato, and lyrical melodies juxtaposed against each other. The instrument's strength remains evident, however, particularly in the lower register. The playfulness emerges not only in the materials, but in the formal design, as the clarinetist flits from one character to another quickly and suddenly, rarely staying in one place for very long. The virtuosity that the work requires is therefore about more than technical skill; the performer must also navigate these changes of character and style with a balance and fluency that allows for cohesion between these disparate elements.

Psalm was written over three days following Christmas 2006. The title refers not to any specific psalm, but rather the spirit of them as a whole. The word psalm derives from the Greek word meaning to play a stringed instrument, so it seemed fitting for a solo string piece. The material of the work is derived from an invented scale, developing the initial melodic material through a number of characters and transformations. Originally composed for violin solo, the viola version was made for violist Rebecca Matayoshi, who I met at the University of Illinois.

A floral sea; a cloudless night was adapted from music originally composed for my upcoming hypertext opera, Not Quite a Sunset. Through a combination of guided improvisation and fully composed sections, the four flutists create textures that evoke the dreamworld experienced by the protagonist of the opera. The wind picks up around me, rousing me from sleep, and I open my eyes, but I do not move, only breathe. I am lying on my side in a field of long grass, the brushÂlike ends of which nudge me softly in rhythm with the moving air, encouraging me to get up. Something Â- the floral scent in the air, the chattering of insects around me  seems familiar about this place, though I am not entirely sure where I am.I begin to sit up slowly, first propping myself up on my elbows, taking in my surroundings. The tall grass spreads out in an endless sea around me, shaded black and grey by the darkness, occasionally glinting silver as it sways.  -excerpt from Not Quite a Sunset

The only one of Chaucer’s works that is scientific, not literary, in nature, A Treatise on the Astrolabe represents the oldest known English-language scientific manual and is a personal manual for his son on how to use an astrolabe, an ancient astronomical instrument. The that this work was created for a practical rather than artistic purpose was particularly appealing – it called to mind Walter Miller’s A Canticle for Leibowitz, when Brother Francis creates an illumination of a relic of St. Leibowitz, unaware that the relic was in fact a simple, and quite ordinary, circuit diagram.Presented here are seven songs divided among four parts. The first part, Prelude, contains one song, a setting of Chaucer’s personal introduction to his son, Lewis. The second, Here Begynneth the descripcioun of thin Astrolabie, contains three songs describing various components of the astrolabe. The worken the verrey pracktik of the forseide conclusions follows with two songs explaining the use of the astrolabe to calculate the position of the sun and the time of dawn and dusk; here, the words are spoken rather than sung. Postlude concludes the work in a style reminiscent of the opening, unmeasured material, using for its text the humble conclusion to Chaucer’s introduction.I am very grateful to soprano Tiffany DuMouchelle and percussionist Steve Solook, who I first approached in 2011 about a potential Chaucer cycle, as well as bassist Scott Worthington, who came to the project later but no less enthusiastically; without their support this piece would not have been possible.With the purchase, you are authorized to print a copy of the score for each member of the ensemble for the purposes of rehearsal and performance. For best results print on 11x17 tabloid size paper, landscape orientation.

The piece is structured as a set of musical tercets, gradually increasing in length so that the second tercet is twice the length of the first, the second three times as long, and so forth. Towards the end, the tercet becomes so long that the first segment of one is the complete opening tercet.

Published by Penguinman Music (A0.1023051). Despite the shadows was composed at the request of Susan Narucki, who was curating the February 2014 concert of UCSD's Palimpsest Ensemble. The piece was written as a companion piece for Luigi Dallapiccola's Piccola musica notturna. It is a meditation on working through the grief of infertility. The piece is structured using a single chord, gradually built note by note in the opening section, and slowly transforming and transposing throughout the piece as the voicing expands.
