Today he is best known internationally as the composer of the popular jaunty march The Parade of the Tin Soldiers, also known as The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers. Jessel was a prolific composer who wrote hundreds of light orchestral pieces, piano pieces, songs, waltzes, mazurkas, marches, choruses, and other salon music. He achieved considerable acclaim with a number of his operettas - in particular Schwarzwaldmädel(Black Forest Girl), which remains popular to this day.Because Jessel was a Jew by birth (he converted to Christianity at the age of 23), with the rise of Nazism in the late 1920s, his composing virtually came to an end, and his musical works, which had been very popular, were suppressed and nearly forgotten.In Great Britain the piece was used for many years in BBC radio's Children's Hour to introduce the series Toytown, based on stories by S. In a large-scale art project, prisoners serving a life sentence at the Clairvaux high-security prison in north-eastern France were interviewed by the composer, who set their stories to music. The piece is incredibly dark, coloured by the innermost thoughts of individuals who know they will never again be free, people who are slipping into oblivion. Clairvaux wasn't always a prison, though - it was formerly an important monastery. Established by St. Bernhard in 1115 and closed in connection with the French Revolution, Clairvaux is a mythic place. For some, it is an abbey where thousands of monks voluntarily chose the path of saints, plunging themselves into the blessed silence of darkness. For others, it is a prison, the sheer name of which inspires terror and generates horrific images. My intention was that we, with our concert, would create a bridge between the present and the past, between incarceration and voluntary solitude. So I sought out the historical sources for our earliest notated music, from the French abbey of Solemn, and composed a variety of versions based on Gregorian themes. Published by Sam Wibowo (A0.1030368). Moles is a 4 minute string quartet which roots from two main concepts: (More famously,) Bach’s and Shostakovich’s musical cryptography and Elgar’s enigma. Hence, the name of the work is something to only be understood by the composer. The main harmonic motif comes from SA(MU)E(L) (WI)B(OWO) which then equates to E-flat, A, E-natural and B-flat which enharmonically become notes of two diminished chords. This motific process has also been done for 4 other people, which is to remain unknown. The development and the interaction between each motif represent and symbolise personal stories along with its rhythmic, harmonic, and expressive aspects such as bar numbers, inversions of chosen chords, and expression markings. The harmonic material throughout the work remains unstable, struggling to find functioning consonance. On the other hand, the rhythmic framework remains fairly stable and metrically comfortable, compensating for the instability of the harmonic material. Insight into the first 19 bars: The opening can be seen to canonically imitate, stating the main harmonic motif (E-flat, A, E-natural and B-flat) throughout the 4 string instruments. Each 5 roman numerals introduce each inversion, since 4 more inversions can fit into an octave before completing the cycle. Furthermore this represents the other 4 people in the piece all linking back to me, calming the rhythmic and harmonic variety through the gradual making of the chord: E-flat, E-natural, B-flat and A.

Mortals, Gods, and Heroes was commissioned by Andrew Janack for the Maple Avenue Middles School Select Band in Saratoga Springs, NY. The school was doing a curriculum-wide reading project on Greek mythology. It seemed natural to create a wind ensemble suite based on three stories from Greek mythology. Each movement creates a miniature tone poem with clear motifs for each character in the myths. The characters include Athena (who makes a return in the final movement), Arachne, Orpheus, Charon the ferryman, Cerberus the three-headed dog, Sisyphus, Persephone, Eurydice, Perseus, and Medusa. The eleven-minute piece is colorful and inventive with plenty of special techniques in the percussion especially designed for middle school students. Mortals, Gods, and Heroes is in three movements: I. Arachne’s Web II. The Passage of OrpheusIII. Perseus and the Gorgon The score is formatted for 8.5 X 14 (legal) size paper and is 57 pages. The parts are formatted for 8.5 X 11 (letter) size paper.

Three Preludes on Occitan Songs
The single download comprises of an Introduction with performers' notes, a score with TAB underneath (to aid with the DADGBD tuning) and a score with notes only.
In performance, the guitar is tuned DADGBD (with both strings 1 and 6 tuned to D).
Icomposed Three Preludes on Occitan Songsduring the years I spent living and working in South West France.
I hadthe pleasure of seeing Occitan bands performing at village festivals. The styleof music was coarse and rhythmic with lyrics telling timeless stories. I borrowed the mostsimple of melodic fragments and use them to create contemporary guitar workssuitable for concert performance.
The Cancion de Hialara translates as ?The Spinner?sSong?. In this, I have imitated the rustic drones of the hurdy-gurdies found inOccitan bands through the use of tremolo patterns.
Som Som is a lullaby. This melody isfamiliar to many cultures across Europe and beyond.
Lò NostreAse translatesas ?Our Donkey?. It is a comic song which tells of the antics of a stubbornrustic animal. Players should enjoy the hemiola rhythms where 3/4 is set again6/8.

This cancause some difficulty in reading. Also, to take advantage of the sonority ofthe instrument when tuned this way, the unusual playing positions and fingeringare critical. It is for these reasons that I have provided the score in justnotes but also with notes and tablature below.
