Clément Janequin (c. 1485 in Châtellerault, Vienne -- 1558 in Paris) was a French composer of the Renaissance. He was one of the most famous composers of popular chansons of the entire Renaissance, and along with Claudin de Sermisy, was hugely influential in the development of the Parisian chanson, especially the programmatic type. The wide spread of his fame was made possible by the concurrent development of music printing.The piece transcribes beautifully for Trumpet Quartet. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534403). This is one of two duets that Leguerney wrote for Geneviève Touraine and her brother, the famous French baritone Gérard Souzay. It was completed on 21 January 1950. The first performance, with Souzay and Touraine, was 21 June 1950 in the Parisian Salle Gaveau with Jacqueline Robin (Bonneau) at the piano. Previously unpublished, De l’abîme profond, was first recorded by soprano Danielle Borst and baritone Philippe Huttenlocher with Mary Dibbern at the piano. This was for the CD 50-9618, 28 Mélodies issued by Claves Records-Radio Suisse Romande: Espace 2 in 1996. The recording was recognized with the Grand Prix du Disque de l’Académie Charles Cros. The US premiere performance was by soprano Jill Pearon and baritone David Pittman-Jennings, accompanied by Mary Dibbern, during a recital at the Crane School of Music, SUNY-Potsdam, New York, 23 October 2007. The vocal range for the soprano line is C1-G#2 and for the baritone line is B-F1. The text’s poet, Jean de La Céppède (1550-1622), was born in Marseille and spent most of his life working as a lawyer and magistrate in Aix–en–Provence. His principal work, Théorèmes, consists of 515 sonnets dealing with the life of Jesus Christ and the “sacred mysteries of our redemption.†La Céppède’s poem is a translation of a psalm by David from the Old Testament of the Bible. Leguerney also set a psalm of David for medium voice and chamber orchestra, which was premiered by Gérard Souzay in 1954. This orchestral Psaume LXII de David is also published by Musik Fabrik. The national anthem of the Dominican Republic (Spanish: Himno nacional de República Dominicana), also known by its incipit Valiant Quisqueyans (Spanish: Quisqueyanos valientes), was composed by José Rufino Reyes y Siancas (1835–1905), and its lyrics were authored by Emilio Prud'Homme (1856–1932).José Reyes was inspired to create a national anthem for the Dominican Republic after having seen the Argentine National Anthem in the Parisian newspaper El Americano. In 1883, he invited his friend Emilio Prud'Homme to write lyrics for the anthem.The first version of Prud'Homme's lyrics was published in the weekly newspaper El Eco de la Opinion on 16 August 1883, and the first public performance of the anthem took place the next day on 17 August in Respectable Hope Lodge No. 9 in Santo Domingo. Though the music was an instant success, several objections were made to the lyrics for having various historical inaccuracies. In 1897, Prud’Homme submitted revised lyrics, which stand to this day.On 7 June 1897, the Congress of the Dominican Republic passed an act adopting Himno Nacional with the original music and revised lyrics as the country's official national anthem; however, then-President Ulises Heureaux (1846–1898) vetoed the act, because the lyric's author, Prud’Homme, was an opponent of the president and his administration.[1] In 1899, Heureaux was assassinated, and the political disorder that ensued prevented the national anthem's legal adoption until 30 May 1934, when Himno Nacional was officially adopted and signed into law.

Orfeo ed Euridice is an opera composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck, based on the myth of Orpheus and set to a libretto by Ranieri de' Calzabigi. It belongs to the genre of the azione teatrale, meaning an opera on a mythological subject with choruses and dancing.The piece was first performed at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 5 October 1762, in the presence of Empress Maria Theresa. Orfeo ed Euridice is the first of Gluck's reform operas, in which he attempted to replace the abstruse plots and overly complex music of opera seria with a noble simplicity in both the music and the drama.The opera is the most popular of Gluck's works, and was one of the most influential on subsequent German operas. Variations on its plot—the underground rescue mission in which the hero must control, or conceal, his emotions—can be found in Mozart's The Magic Flute, Beethoven's Fidelio, and Wagner's Das Rheingold.Though originally set to an Italian libretto, Orfeo ed Euridice owes much to the genre of French opera, particularly in its use of accompanied recitative and a general absence of vocal virtuosity. Indeed, twelve years after the 1762 premiere, Gluck re-adapted the opera to suit the tastes of a Parisian audience at the Académie Royale de Musique with a libretto by Pierre-Louis Moline. This reworking was given the title Orphée et Eurydice, and several alterations were made in vocal casting and orchestration to suit French tastes.Ther picture is Count Francesco Algarotti, an Italian polymath, philosopher, poet, essayist, anglophile, art critic and art collector. He was a man of broad knowledge, an expert in Newtonianism, architecture and opera. When he first presented and published these pieces, he offered them as recently discovered works by those other composers, newly adapted and arranged by himself. In the case of Sicilienne and Rigaudon, it is eighteenth-century French violinist/composer François Francoeur whose name is on the title sheet, though the piece really has nothing to do with Francoeur's style.The piece is a simple and a charming one, however. The Sicilienne is a binary-form miniature that sweeps along on a characteristic dotted rhythm, with a rather melancholy melody. Think old French ballet. The constant 16th notes of the Rigaudon, give it a character quite unlike that of a traditional rigaudon-a cheerful Baroque dance movement in duple meter.

This charming piano solo was first performed by its dedicatee, Jacques Leguerney’s good friend and muse Thérèse Cahen (1897-1944), in the Salle Debussy-Pleyel. They met around 1925. Cahen was the first person outside of his family to encourage his musical aspirations. For years, they met every Saturday to read through and discuss his music. She not only helped him with piano and harmony, but also performed his early chamber works, recruiting from her entourage to help him find high level interpreters for his music. Other early Leguerney works that she premiered included the Trio pour violon, violoncello et piano; the Sonatine pour flûte et piano; and two vocal chamber works presented by the Société Musicale Indépendente (S. M. I.), Epitaphe guerrière and Clair de lune for voice, flute and piano. Their friendship lasted until Cahen was deported from Paris on July 31, 1944, only a few weeks prior to the Liberation of Paris. Working with the Center of the Union Générale des Israélites de France in Saint-Mandé (a Parisian suburb), Thérèse Cahen had dedicated herself to the care of children of deported French parents. She left Paris with these children in the Convoy 77, and was taken to the gas chamber of Auschwitz. She left a letter for him, along with her grand piano, which remained in his apartment until his death.My dear Jacques,It is impossible to write on this little page how much I have appreciated your kindness toward me for years and years, and how much happiness this has given me: there have been thousands of Saturdays, and I thought of them every day of the week.
