La Peri is a ballet in one act by Paul Dukas, written in 1912 and first performed in Paris. The Fanfare was originally scored for full brass ensemble, however this great arrangement for Trombone Quintet by Andrew Poirier is one of the favorites of the Canadian Trombone Ensemble iTromboni.

Here, the passage of time has rendered the titles somewhat enigmatic. ?La Cupis? may be yet another feminine portrait, its potential namesake being Marie-Anne Cupis, a well-known dancer. Why not? The Brindisi song is a famous duet from Verdi's La Traviata opera. The music is lively and encourages the drinking of wine during a party at Violetta's house by her friend Gastone and herself.

The music is appropriate for intermediate performers for Trumpet in B-flat and Trombone in bass clef. This lovely arrangement by Robert Fisco is good for training young performers how to tune octaves and blend their sounds together in a fun way.

La Nuit is a harmonization due to Joseph Noyon (1888-1962) of a theme of the opera "Hippolyte and Aricie", composed by Jean-Philippe Rameau in 1733.

Barrios had originally composed La Catedral in 1921 as a two-movement piece and so the piece was originally known as having only these two movements. Some seventeen years later, he then composed another piece entitled 'Saudade' (available, separately, as a stand-alone piece) and then a year after composing it, decided to include it as the prelude to the already existing two-movement version. Although it is well-known that Barrios' always included Preludio 'Saudade' whenever performing La Catedral, there are actually no original written copies of the three-movement version.
In this arrangement, some liberties were taken with Allegro Solemne in the 21st measure as it was thought to make for a smoother progression.

La Feria (The Fair) is a Spanish fiesta! All the sights and sounds of a traditional Spanish street festival.
Paul Lacome wrote mostly operas-bouffes, light comic operas. That same drama and delight comes through in this piece. Originally written for orchestra, there have been many popular arrangements for band. I have arranged it for Clarinet Quartet without losing any of the Spanish tradition or dramatic character of the piece.
The Suite is in 3 sections. The first is entitled Los Toros (The Bulls). The running of the bulls is a tradition of nearly every Spanish fair. This highly energetic and rhythmic section is traditional Spanish fiesta music at its best. The second section is entitled La Reja (loosely-The Gate). This one is in the form of a Serenade. Every fair has a street barred off with a special archway entrance or gate. Inside, tents are set up serving local wine. Strolling street musicians will visit each tent and serenade. This section is scaled back dynamically and also in texture to imitate the solo or duo strolling musician. For the B theme of this section I move the melody to the Clarinet 3 part down low. I like to amuse myself and think of this brief growling melody as a tipsy patron of the tent singing back to the musicians. The street musicians then quickly resume their original song. The final section is entitled La Zarzuela. The Zarzuela is a uniquely Spanish comic opera that is heavy on dance and spoken dialogue. It has much in common with the American vaudeville shows. This section is in the form of a brisk waltz, another high energy rhythmic dance where Clarinet 2 takes the B theme melody.
This piece is of Advanced Intermediate difficulty due to constant movement, articulations, rhythm, and range. Clarinet 1 in particular uses the full range of the instrument.

Fuga on El Noi de la Mare is a new piece for guitar quartet. It is a fugue based on the main melody of the beautiful Catalan Christmas song, El Noi de la Mare, made famous by the great Andres Segovia.

After a fugal exposition, the original melody is presented with a range of harmonisations. There are very few technical difficulties for the players.

The download includes a full score and individual parts in notes for all players.

The parts can be played one-to-a-part or as a larger ensemble making ideal for guitar societies, schools, summer schools and festivals.
