The concerto bears the dedication “for Walter Simmons, a hero for the cause of American music.†Musicologist Walter Simmons has been an inspirational and passionate advocate for seriousAmerican concert music for nearly his entire life. Through his tireless efforts as author, critic, recordand concert producer, and lecturer, Walter has brought myriad composers and works to muchdeserved attention. The basic musical material for the entire work is presented near the outset, the pitches Eb – D – G –Ab – E. This cell is used throughout the rest of the concerto both motivically, in transformation, and as a harmonic structural device. Its harmonic identity creates the mix of tonal/modal and atonal constructs that are a preoccupation of my music. The concerto’s title provided the poetic idea behind the musical development. Shadow Dance and Lament - for solo oboe and piano - by Kenneth BairdA most enjoyable and fresh choice for solo contest, festival, or recital. Beginning with a playful allegretto with an almost oriental sound, the melody reflects the shadow of a young person dancing. The next section is beautiful melody in a lyrical and expressive style. A very quick flourish then follows featuring a technical interplay between the oboe and the piano. The composition then concludes with a restatement of the original playful melody. This was composed in 1991. This new 2023 edition includes more detailed dynamic markings and a revised ending.

A Piano Trio, written for the Leeds University Union Music Society Winter Concert Series. Performed by the Hughes Trio featuring Christopher Hughes (Piano), Amy Howe (Violin), and Nikki Kemp (Cello) Programme Notes: This is a rather melodramatic piece that follows the Five Stages of Grief. I first sketched the piece for string quartet after an absolutely horrific interview at the Royal Northern College of Music. Feeling disheartened and dejected, I got home and messily scribbled on some manuscript paper An Elegy for Hopes and Dreams, and started writing this extremely over-dramatic and self-indulgent piece. I had abandoned this piece for an entire year before reviving it and writing the whole piece in just over a week and a half, now reimagined for Piano Trio. The piece starts with an atonal representation of grief before quickly moving into an upbeat Denial section which features a sort of fragile and manic sense of repression as a theme that initially sounds upbeat quickly unravels with whole-tone scales and chromatic movement. A representation of Anger is then seen with the whole trio playing the same melody with a jarring Bb in the harmony. The denial and anger sections repeat and regress before abruptly moving to a Bargaining section in which the original theme, ominously played in the lower piano and cello registers, is juxtaposed with a conjunct, major variation of the same theme in the violin. The Depression section takes the form of a cello solo as I find it to be one of the most emotive and expressive instruments and I take inspiration from Elgar's Cello Concerto, which I angstily listened to on the flight home from my aforementioned interview. A lilting and lamenting cello solo is contrasted with an atonal, aimless piano accompaniment which reflects the topic of depression. The bargaining theme reprises slightly with both strings performing the major variation before leading to the final climax. The Acceptance section sees the principal theme finally fully resolved in a major mode and with diatonic harmony. This is an expressive section as the whole trio plays the same melody with very simple yet emotive harmonic accompaniment underneath. Sonata No. 3 for Violin and Piano (2012) was written for violinist Warren Davidson and pianist Donna Amato, superb musicians for whose advocacy on behalf of my music I am very grateful. The first movement, Canto, is an extended song that develops through a variety of textures. The second movement, Lamento, is a fierce lament in the tradition of an old Irish caoine. The thirdmovement, Variazioni, is structured as two presentations of the theme surrounding five free variations. The theme serves both as the basis of the musical material for each variation as well as the structural template. Each variation also contains material referring back specifically to the previous variation. The opening theme is declamatory. The first variation is fast and limber. The second variation is introspective and stratified. The third variation is fleeting. The fourth variation is distant and spare. The fifth variation is fast and driving. The final theme begins whispered and slowly regains its declamatory nature before an intense coda ends the work.
