While I was still in high school, the moment I first heard Holst’s suite,“The Planets,†it quickly became one of my favorite works of Classical music. “Mars, the Bringer of War,†the first movement of the suite, was easily my favorite followed by “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity.†The nobility of the slow theme, which this arrangement is based on, resonated deep within my soul. Hear My Cry is a very personal prayer from the 61st Psalm written by David. It seems that words were not enough to express his inner turmoil so he needed to cry out to his Creator. While writing this piece I envisioned David falling at the feet of God, then compassionately being picked up and embraced. God, seeing David’s humility and faith, hears and answers his prayer. This contemporary choral setting uses cluster voicings and influences from jazz harmony to exploit the emotional intensity of the text.

O. : Is my newest sci-fi full length modern play in the TYNE ONSTAGE series of original musicals. I wrote this specifically for the senior students of the Performing Arts. It has many leading parts for both sexes and has a hint of the 60-70 style of writing found in those musicals of the times but modern in context. The story line includes opportunities for many individual performances covering song and dance numbers, group singing, contemporary dance, dramatic interludes and strong comedy parts. This is an original story taking a humorous look at a possible visitation from our space neighbours. The story begins with the arrival of GS2, an ‘Interstellar Space Surveyor’ on its mission to map this part of the Universe. Whilst reporting its position to the home base ‘Niva’, the surveyor informs them that one of the planets (Earth) appears to have intelligent life forms. On receiving this information Niva decides to dispatch a party of college students to study this unique planet, much to the annoyance of GS2 who take umbridge at being appointed, what he calls a Galactic Nanny! Events take a dramatic turn when the surveyor is called away on an ‘emergency rescue mission’ so has to beam the students down to planet Earth, where during transmutation, they are warned not to integrate with the population. Rather than compose on the computer as I usually do, I wrote by hand as I determined the best four-part canonic treatment for each of the phrases of the chant. Composing this was akin to assembling a puzzle, both in mindset (this note fits best here) and addictive quality (need to finish this now!). Originally conceived as a short organ piece, I quickly chose to add the English text from the Hymnal 1982 then text directly from the Liber Usualis, a Catholic book of Gregorian chants commonly used until the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II). This piece is similar in style to an Italian Renaissance canzona or early German Baroque kanon. It should be performed with performance practice of those eras in mind, including lifts after dotted notes, metric accents, and minimal vibrato, especially at cadences. Lines that end in a melisma should be performed by singing the final vowel and placing the consonant at the release of the final melisma note. Rather than compose on the computer as I usually do, I wrote by hand as I determined the best four-part canonic treatment for each of the phrases of the chant. Composing this was akin to assembling a puzzle, both in mindset (this note fits best here) and addictive quality (need to finish this now!). Originally conceived as a short organ piece, I quickly chose to add the English text from the Hymnal 1982 then text directly from the Liber Usualis, a Catholic book of Gregorian chants commonly used until the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II). This piece is similar in style to an Italian Renaissance canzona or early German Baroque kanon. It should be performed with performance practice of those eras in mind, including lifts after dotted notes, metric accents, and minimal vibrato, especially at cadences. Lines that end in a melisma should be performed by singing the final vowel and placing the consonant at the release of the final melisma note. The four variations follow the four verses of text written by Walter Chalmers Smith (1824-1908) as found in the Hymnal 1982. I leave it to your artistic imagination to interpret how the melodies and harmonies of each variation paint the text. Much like my Opus 2 (Partita Vom Himmel hoch), this set of variations was initially conceived as an improvisation. As such, some rubato should be employed in performance. Registration suggestions are indicated in the score though are by no means binding. To maintain the atmosphere of wonderment established by the first variation, the tempo of the final variation should not be too fast.

Taking a cue from Psalm 23, this piece features an ABA form and subtle text painting throughout. In the A sections, the voice and right hand or oboe follow each other in canon while the left hand or harp undulate gently underneath as a meadow in the breeze. The B section starts out dissonantly apprehensive but soon rises to a place of comfort and confidence before bubbling out in joy. The instrumental coda echoes the phrase The Lord is my shepherd from the beginning as a final affirmation.While originally scored for tenor, this piece may be sung by a bass, baritone, alto/mezzo, or soprano. Three different ranges are available for purchase to accommodate different vocal ranges. This piece will present a good challenge for vocalists of all abilities since it has a low tessitura but a high range on brief passages.
