Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808680).     First published in Flowers for Children, Volume 2 in 1844, Lydia Maria Child’s poem, The New-England Boy's Song about Thanksgiving Day, describes a sleigh trip to Grandfather’s house to commemorate the national day of thanks and the anticipation of the tasty food that will be consumed in celebration thereof. Why were they in a sleigh in a New England late November? Because the Little Ice Age was still extant in the early 19th Century and there was snow on the ground! Later, maybe in the 1870s, the poem was set to a tune, the composer of which is unknown. As years passed, the words were changed to Grandmother’s house, the song was adapted to a Christmas carol and the title changed to the first line of the poem, Over the River and Through the Woods.

The History of the United States Marine Corps and the Marine Corps HymnOn November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution to establish the Continental Marines. is marked the formation of the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps was provided two battalions with a fleet. But the Treaty of Paris in April 1783 ended the Marine Corps along with the Revolutionary War. It was later permanently re-established on July 11, 1798. Since then the United States Marine Corps has been involved in the War of 1812, defending Washington in Bladensburg, Maryland, fighting for Andrew Jackson against the British in New Orleans, and fighting in the Mexican War (1846-1848) in which US Marines fought all the way to the Halls of Montezuma, Mexico City. The Marines served in the Civil War (1861-1865), the Spanish-American War (1898), the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902), the Boxer Rebellion in China (1900), and World War I. The Marines were later involved in World War II, the Korean conflict beginning in 1950, and the Vietnam conflict, beginning in 1965. By the 1970s, the Marines were securing NATO, and later were involved in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm (1990s), Somalia (1992), Operation Enduring Freedom (2001), the Global War on Terrorism and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2002), and in various conflicts since then. Since the inception of the Marine Corps in 1775,about 70,000 Marines have been killed in action. James Linzey served as a chaplain for the Marines in training at Fort Lee, Virginia, and as a contract chaplain at the Airman-Marine Memorial Chapel at MCAS Miramar from 2016-2019. While at Miramar, he gave leadership seminars to the Marines on the Battle of Midway. He is one of ten children of World War II hero, the late Navy Captain Stanford E. Linzey, Jr., CHC, USN (Ret.), who survived the sinking of the USS Yorktown (CV-5) in the Battle of Midway as a sailor, and later served with the Marines in Okinawa as a chaplain. Since the Marine Corps is part of the Department of the Navy, it has used the Navy hymn in chapel services. What is called “The Marine’s Hymn” cannot be sung in chapel services, because it is not a song of praise. As a fighting march, its author called it a hymn in name only. So, in commemoration of the United States Marine Corps, hymn writer James F. Linzey wrote the United States Marine Corps Hymn, “Serving for Thee.” He set it to the tune of Bethany, which was written by Lowell Mason in 1841. Two musicians, Ottmar Gerster and Hanns Eisler, proposed music to Becher's lyrics, and Eisler's version was selected. History Written in 1949, the East German national anthem reflects the early stages of German separation, in which continuing progress towards reunification of the occupation zones was seen by most Germans as appropriate and natural. Consequently, Becher's lyrics develop several connotations of unity and combine them with fatherland (einig Vaterland), meaning Germany as a whole. However, this concept soon would not conform to an increasingly icy Cold War context, especially after the Berlin Wall had been erected in 1961 by the East German government.[1] In September 1973, East and West Germany were admitted to the United Nations simultaneously, following talks between the two governments that conferred a degree of mutual recognition. The term Germany was later removed from the East German constitution, and only the national anthem's tune was played on official occasions. No new lyrics were ever written to replace Becher's, which continued to be used unofficially, especially after die Wende in late 1989: once it became clear that the countries were actually moving towards reunification, East German television Deutscher Fernsehfunk reinstated the work and signed off every night with a joyous symphonic rendition of the vocal arrangement, with accompanying picturesque footage of East Germany's main tourist attractions. Auferstanden aus Ruinen ceased to be a national anthem when the German Democratic Republic dissolved and its states joined the Federal Republic of Germany as a result of German reunification in 1990. Deutschlandlied, composed in 1841, became the national anthem of a united Germany again. East German Premier Lothar de Maizière had proposed that Becher's lyrics be added to the united German national anthem, but this was rejected by his West German counterpart, chancellor Helmut Kohl. At the end of its last broadcast on 2 October 1990, the East German international radio broadcaster Radio Berlin International signed off with a vocal version of the East German national anthem. In November 1995, Auferstanden aus Ruinen was played again when German President Roman Herzog visited Brazil. This was the first event at which the anthem had been played since the German reunification.

It is an original Harp improvisation to be accompanied by an adaptation for strings inspired by Tchaikovsky`s choir piece „Cherubic Hymn. The harmonic structure of Tchaikowky`s original work has been faithfully reproduced, so all credits for this piece goes to him. Rather than an arrangement, the outcome of this adventurous experience resulted in an improvisation for the Harp. With the added melodies on the Harp and the stringed instrumental caracter of the orquestral adaptation, the piece gains a stronger tone contrast, keeping at the same time its deep spiritual beauty, thus bringing it to a wider range of public and performance choices. it is very easy to perform, yet it moves deeply both performer and public. The piece is appropriate for beginner students. It can be used in serious concerts and all kinds of cultural events. It is a very Spiritual piece, it induces a wonderful mood in Baptism or Christmas celebrations. One can get married to it. The piece is also appropriate to honor someone in a funeral. Although this score was composed in full intent to be performed as written, the Harp part can be played by itself and the orquestral arrangement from the Hymn can also be performed without the Harp. This score was conceived so that without adaptations, the Harp the orchestra and the original Choir could perform at the same time. Or intercalated „Ad Lieb, the Harp with the choir, or the orquestra with the choir. Instead of a full string orquestra one can also use just a string quartet and a doublebass. A Little Historical Note. „The Cherubic Hymn is part of the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom written in the fourth century by the Byzantine saint, honored as such by both Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches. In the context of the liturgy, the hymn is sung during the most mystical and spiritual part of the service as a prelude to the transubstantiation of bread and wine into the real presence of Our Lord. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the inspiring Master and genial composer with whom I had the happy causality to write this improvisation or „collab was born in; 25 April/7 May 1840 – 25 October/6 November 1893, was a Russian composer of the late Romantic period, he created an outstanding number of unique musical masterpieces. Tchaikovsky was honored in 1884, by Emperor Alexander III, and awarded a lifetime pension. November 1969 by the Cuban National Orchestra under my direction. This symphony reflects not only the excited atmosphere of awakening during those years but also my efforts to include in the composition the large number of new human and artistic stimuli that I experienced at that time. So the banjo starts to play a Vietnamese song of freedom (Stars in the Night), later the first bars of Mikis Theodorakis hymn of freedom is heard. The second movement is based on the poem Fe de erratas (errata sheet) by Miguel Barnet. In the original version, the three parts of the symphony merge without interruption. In the revised version, I separated them to make it easier for the audience to register the caesuras which are also internal caesuras as regards content. Apart from strengthening the string sound, the most significant alternation in comparison to the first version is that I fully composed all of the aleatoric passages and pitches which originally were to be freely improvised as was the fashion at that time. Purcell wrote the incidental music for the play Abdelazer (sometimes spelled 'Abdelazar') in 1695, shortly before his death. It is a lively mix of songs and dances of the time. Typical of the day, several of the movements became well known as popular songs. The rondo was later made famous by Benjamin Britten, who used it as the theme for his set of variations, ‘The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra’. The rondo as well as another selection, the Hornpipe, was included in the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice.This transcription for saxophone quartet SATB of Suite from Abdelazar is comprised of five of the ten selections Purcell wrote for the play. The movements are as follows: I. Overture II. Minuet III. Hornpipe IV. Air V. Rondo About the Composer: Henry Purcell (born c. 1659, London, England—died November 21, 1695, London) was an English composer of Baroque music. Purcell's musical style was uniquely English, although it incorporated Italian and French elements. Generally considered among the greatest English opera composers, Purcell is included with John Dunstaple and William Byrd as England's most important early music composers. Later, Purcell's music also had a strong influence on the composers of the English musical renaissance of the early 20th century.The cause of Purcell's untimely death at the age of 36 is unclear. There are many theories, some preposterous (he died from chocolate poisoning), some more likely: he died of tuberculosis. Purcell was universally mourned as a very great master of music.  Following his death, the officials at Westminster honoured him by unanimously voting that he be buried with no expense spared in the north aisle of the Abbey.

I first heard Irina Muresanu, maybe five years ago, with the Boston Trio in Jordan Hall at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. I was impressed from the very first note she played on her violin. Subsequently I heard her in a chamber music duo recital with pianist Ya-fei Chuang at the Harvard-Epworth Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I remember saying to myself, Wow, she has a big, warm sound! One day I would love to write a violin concerto for her! Last year I heard her play the Brahms and the Tchaikovsky violin concerti on separate occasions with the Lexington Symphony and the Boston Classical Orchestra. It was that wow factor again … When I proposed to write a violin concerto for Max Hobart and the Boston Civic Symphony Orchestra, he asked me who I would like to feature as the soloist. I said Irina Muresanu. Max said it was a fabulous choice since he has been thinking of engaging Irina to play with the Civic for some time. Over the past summer I indulged myself in a buying spree of scores and CD recordings of violin concerti. Many composers’ works stood out: concerti by Brahms, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, Stravinsky, Elgar, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Saint-Saëns, Dvorak, Paganini, Glazunov, Dohnanyi, Nielsen, Spohr, etc. And of course, I did not ignore the gems by Bach and Mozart! The listening to and research of all these concerti masterpieces were quite overwhelming, to say the least. So, by the time I was ready to begin work on my Concerto, I had to put all those scores and CDs aside and begin to find the music in my head. I must confess that it took a while. But eventually I found the seed that brought everything together. And within six weeks, between late September and early November, I completed the short score of the concerto. The orchestration took approximately ten days and the complete work was done on November 21st, 2009. My Violin Concerto, opus 129, is in two parts. Each part consists of a slow section that is followed by a fast one. Part I: Largo, Moderato, Allegro ma non troppo. Part II: Largo, Adagio, Prestissimo. Enjoy!!
