As a young virtuoso, the Frenchman Charles-Valentin Alkan was one of the leading pianists in Paris. Between 1839 and 1843, for unknown reasons, he withdrew completely from public view. On his celebrated return to the concert stage in 1844, according to newspaper reports, Liszt, Chopin, Sand and Dumas, amongst others, were in the audience. In the same year he also wrote ‘Le Chemin de Fer’, which was probably the first musical representation of a railway. Like his popular ‘Douze Études dans les tons mineurs’ op. 39, this study is also characterized by extreme technical requirements. ‘Le Chemin de Fer’ was published by Schott in 1845 (plate number 8072).

C’est un beau voyage aux travers des tonalités que je vous propose avec ces deux pièces.La première Le chemin de croix expriment les 14 tableaux de la Passion du Christ par l’intermédiaire d’un simple arpège et de 14 tonalités différentes. Les 12 tonalités mineures qui débutent l’œuvre de façon parfaitement naturelle (ré, la, mi, si, fa#, do#, sol#, ré#, sib, fa, do, sol) sont suivi par deux tonalités majeures (ré et la) qui viennent conclurent l’œuvre comme une triomphante délivrance.La deuxième pièce Labyrinthe reprend le même principe, mais de façon différente. Avec un autre arpège et des tonalités majeures et mineures qui s’enchainent en s’alternant d’une façon naturelle par le biais d’une légère mutation, nous égarant dans les méandres des tonalités, pour enfin nous retrouver dans le ton original, nous délivrant ainsi de ce grand labyrinthe (do, lam, ré, sim, mi, do#m, fa#, ré#m, lab, fam et do).J’espère que les découvreurs de ces pièces auront le même plaisir que j’ai eu à les composer pour eux.Francis KleynjansIt’s a beautiful journey through the tones that I offer you with these two pieces.The first The Stations of the Cross express the 14 scenes of the Passion of Christ through a simple arpeggio and 14 different tones. Published by Angela Salvaggione (A0.1316569). This piece should be fast and exciting, with very precise counting and rhythm. Imagine an old-time steam locomotive chugging down the tracks. Listen for the train whistles in the piano part. By the very end, the ride is over and the train is pulling into its final stop at the station.This piece is very much influenced by the piano piece Le Chemin de Fer, by Charles-Valentin Alkan. I highly recommend you find a recording of this piano piece to listen to. Don’t try to play Train Ride that fast though! My recording of the bassoon piece is at quarter note at 164. You need not play it that fast. So long as your playing has energy, very solid steady beat, and tongued notes are clear, that will carry the feel of the piece. Time: ca. 2:00-3:00, depending on tempo choiceKey: D minorRange: D2-Eb4I would use this piece with my second or third year students. Younger students should play it on the slower side. More advances students can aim for a faster tempo and use this as a great opportunity to work on keeping fast eighth note passages even.Once the student has purchased this piece, an adjudicator’s copy may be made. The present collection is around the idea of paying homage to the people that each piece is dedicated to.El Colibrí (Hummingbird): A meaningful bird within Central American indigenous mythology. Dedicated to my good friend and co-author Federico Sheppard, a very special human being with whom I have walked a long journey in a short time, to produce and publish the work of the great Agustín Barrios Mangoré.El Faro refers to the guidance of a lighthouse for the those navigating the sea, the light to point travellers in the right direction. This piece is dedicated to maestro Antonio Rodríguez Delgado, for his unconditional friendship, light, and guidance with the complex journey of our beloved instrument, so that it be used as a tool for self realization.Gratitude is dedicated to maestro Elias Barreiro for his tireless work and contribution to the global guitar practices, additionally, for his genuine friendship.Canción de Cuna is a piece that pretends to reflect the awakening of a new consciousness for humanity, the title (Lullaby) refers to the little person we all have inside.La présente collection est centrée sur l'idée de rendre hommage aux personnes auxquelles chaque pièce est dédiée.El Colibrí (Colibri) : Un oiseau significatif dans la mythologie indigène d'Amérique centrale.
