The song was largely unknown outside Shaker communities until Aaron Copland used its melody for the score of Martha Graham's ballet, Appalachian Spring, first performed in 1944. Simple Gifts has now been arranged for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 2 Trumpets, 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba, by Regis Bookshar. This arrangement features the French Horn on the melody. It is suitable for high school and college students, and, depending upon their ability, even elementary school students. Professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. They believed that animals, plants and even rocks had a life and a spirit. And they considered trees to be the most important elements. Trees symbolized life: the roots were in the Underworld, the branches in the Otherworld and the trunk in the Middle Earth. Trees gave the Celtics wood to build homes and weapons and to shelter them from the cold. They also shielded them from the sun with their shadow. Trees gave them fruit to eat and they lodged birds, the messengers of the Gods, in their branches. Trees protected people’s spirits and so each person was assigned a sacred tree according to their date of birth.Even today we still have spirits and objects that protect us. In the case of artists, their own art is often their protector. The title of this song refers to the ivory angel, the piano, however, this song is dedicated to all the instruments that help us express ourselves and prevent us from being lonely, silent or forgotten. Dedicated to world renowned guitarist David Russell, Peated Waltzes is a three-movement piece that pays homage to the peated whiskies of Islay, the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. The opening movement, Earthy Smoke, Sea Salt and Iodine, attempts to portray the distinctive character of the single malts of that region. Based on the Gaelic folk song The Praise of Islay (Moladh na Landaidh), the second movement’s title comes from one the song’s last verses, O, may long their wild notes flow. The third movement’s theme was extracted from the letters of Laphroaig, one of the most iconic Scotch whiskies, whose name’s meaning inspired the title, By the Broad Bay. In the second part, the traditional Celtic melody, An Islay Pipe Reel, is quoted. At the end, themes of the previous movements are recalled and intertwined, as if trying to emulate the long and lingering finish of an Islay dram.Dédié au guitariste de renommée mondiale David Russell, « Peated Waltzes » est une pièce en trois mouvements qui rend hommage aux whiskies tourbés d’Islay, l’île la plus méridionale des Hébrides intérieures d’Écosse. Le mouvement d'ouverture, « Earthy Smoke, Sea Salt and Iodine », tente de dépeindre le caractère distinctif des single malts de cette région. Here it is arranged by John Hyatt Brewer (1856-1931) and adapted by Philip Le Bas for a cappella TTBB choir (plus solo.) It is admittedly a thoroughly violent, anti-Saxon (yes, that ancient!) marching song, but it deserves to be sung as the melody is so well-loved and it is so full of drama and excitement. Extra sound effects are introduced by the solo part imitating trumpets and drums, and by all the singers with loud (on the spot?) bootsteps! Brewer's harmonization also keeps the interest up through both verses. Pace Welshmen, perhaps this could be hammed up a little?

Prévert indicates that you can never capture the real essence of a bird. You can paint a cage, a tree branch for it to sing on, but you have to wait for the actual bird itself to enter your painting - only then can you sign your painting, using a feather from that bird. The music has a Dorian feel - ie with a minor third and seventh but often with a raised sixth - (in this case F#s in an otherwise A minor context). I have provided full score and separate parts and also the melody instrument part with chord names, to enable the guitarist to read along with the melody instrument player and opt for interpretations other than the notated version (eg strumming, rasgueado etc).
