There's nothing ancient about its style though, it's full of life, and positively skips along.It may have its origins in the book of Isaiah ch 1 v 3: the ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib.This arrangement is for SSA choir with piano accompaniment and optional violin. If you have a friendly violinist, the violin line adds a real sparkle!People who aren't used to singing in French won't find it too taxing (I hope!) as there's lots of repetition in the verses, and the refrain stays the same.Translation: v1.Between the ox and the grey donkey the little boy sleeps. Ref: A thousand heavenly angels, a thousand seraphim, fly around this great God of love.v2: In Mary's arms sleeps the fruit of life.v3: Between roses and lilies sleeps the divine child.v4: Surrounded by the cheerful shepherds the little boy sleeps.

Live recording: Daniela Carlino -Syrah ensemble, Palermo 2017Parte Terza: il sogno come evasione dalla precarietà della vita L'ultima parte è la più complessa della composizione ed è basata su un testo di Guido Gozzano: La via del rifugio . Si tratta di una poesia molto articolata che offre parecchi spunti quasi teatrali: il poeta si trova disteso a terra, nella campagna piemontese, mentre due bambine, nipoti, figlie della sorella, giocano cantando un'antica filastrocca. Il poeta alterna le sue riflessioni sulla vita e sulle grandi domande dell'esistenza ai versi di questa filastrocca e alla descrizione dei giochi delle bambine, i girotondi e la cattura di una farfalla, che tanto coinvolge le piccole. Al fine di rendere meglio la teatralità del brano l'autore ha affidato il testo della filastrocca a due voci infantili e le riflessioni del poeta alla voce di soprano (con l'eccezione di qualche frammento di quest'ultimo tipo recitato dalle bambine stesse). La struttura del testo, con ritorni frequenti di alcune brevi strofe, ha suggerito una forma musicale che si avvicina al tradizionale rondò, in cui in particolare un refrain ritorna in maniera sempre nuova alternandosi a vari episodi. La melodia della filastrocca, elaborazione di una tipica melodia tradizionale è il refrain principale e viene sempre variato nella combinazione delle due voci e degli strumenti, e nell'armonizzazione. Un altro episodio frequente, anch'esso rivisitato nei vari ritorni, è quello del primo intervento dell'autore: socchiusi gli occhi sto seduto sul trifoglio, e vedo un quatrifoglio che non raccoglierò, nelle sue varianti testuali. Il brano vuole anche essere anche una sintesi dei precedenti (Parte Prima e Seconda), riproponendo riferimenti importanti ai temi principali uditi, ma anche a frammenti secondari, che compaiono all'interno del tessuto musicale per suggerire stati d'animo o immagini simili a quelle originarie del brano da cui sono state estrapolate o comunque servono a mettere i brani a confronto e creare delle correlazioni musicali e concettuali.

This setting of the traditional Advent plainchant is based around a harmonized refrain using the original Latin words: Rorate coeli de super et nubes pluant justum (Drop down, O heavens, from above and let the skies pour down *justice.) The music and the words express the Advent theme of a cry for justice and salvation in the midst of despair. The traditional verses making up the Advent Prose, based on various parts of scripture, are sung in English unison plainchant, and they express the feelings of one living through a disaster (specifically the fall of Jerusalem in the sixth century BC.) The third and fourth stanzas become more hopeful in their words, especially the famous words (from Isaiah 40) Comfort, O comfort my people, Here the setting introduces some gentle harmonization, leading to a final return of the Rorate chorus in unison and a harmonized hope-filled coda.

E pensa: Strano il mio destino che mi porta qui … ; un destino che la costringe, per qualche motivo, a riflettere sul suo passato, riportandola al momento in cui ha deciso di andarsene via in silenzio. Un destino che, ancora oggi, la sorprende a ripensare a quell’amore ma senza indicarle una nuova strada dove poter andare, perché, anche se tutto quell’amore, io l’ho spazzato via…, fa male non pensare a te. Nel ritornello, emerge una speranza (sottolineata dall’apertura della melodia): Io non ti perderò, oltre il tempo e le distanze andrò…; speranza che viene confermata nell’ultima strofa: È chiaro il mio destino … io ti raggiungerò, quando la ragazza capisce anche che non tutto dipende da lei: proverò a gridare e forse sentirai, la mia voce che ti chiama, se vuoi.. In the refrain, a hope emerges (underlined by the opening of the melody): I will not lose you, beyond time and distance I will go ...; hope that is confirmed in the last stanza: It is clear my destiny ... The Piano Trio in E flat, Op.2 was published by Simrock in 1807 with a dedication to Monsieur le Comte de Browne, Brigadeur au Service de S.M.J. de toutes les Russies. It is a generously proportioned work in the usual three movements. The lengthy sonata-from first movement is prefaced by a slow introduction which begins on dominant seventh harmony (a nod perhaps to Beethoven's first symphony), slowly finding its way to the tonic by the start of the Allegro section. The brief development section modulates widely, including references to keys as distant as E minor and C major, while the substantially rewritten and varied recapitulation touches on both B and G majors. The slow movement, Andante un poco Allegretto , is cast in the key of C minor and features many solos and duets for the string instruments as well as further harmonic interest, especially in the central modulating episode from bar 46. The finale is a sonata-rondo design complete with all the usual tricks, including even a remote transposition of the refrain late in the movement to B major, a technique surely learned from Beethoven. The present edition reproduces as faithfully as possible the text of the trio as transmitted in Simrock's edition of the work, a copy of which is preserved in the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin. The piano part is most successfully realised on an instrument extending as far as c4, although since such instruments were by no means standard in the first decade of the 19th century, Ries has notated the part carefully to cater for instruments without an extended treble compass. Any alternative readings have been incorporated into the current edition exactly as they appear in the Simrock print. In an instance such as bars 298-309 of the finale for example, instruments with the extended compass should follow the small print in bars 298 and 309, and in between read the notes an octave higher according to the composer's 8ve marking. Instruments with a limited compass should play the notes as written, without the octave transposition of bars 299-309. The cello part contains several passages written in the treble clef. Evidence that these should sound an octave lower than written is provided by bars 74-80 of the first movement and 85-89 of the finale. In the first instance, awkward octave displacements would result if this passage were played literally; in the second instance, some unacceptable part crossing between violin and cello would result from a literal rendition of these two bars. Accordingly then, all passages written in the treble clef should be transposed down an octave. The style and notation of articulation and dynamic markings have been standardised throughout, and, where missing from the print, markings have been reconstructed from parallel passages. These are indicated by the use of dotted slurs or brackets where appropriate. Obvious wrong notes have been corrected without comment, and editorial emendations with no authority from the print are placed within brackets. Dianne James.

This ancient carol tells the story of the fall of Adam, causing humanity to be wrapt in sin. Yet out of God's goodness we are redeemed by the birth of Christ. The listeners are exhorted to begin an holy life to live, and to rejoice and merry be, for this is Christmas Eve. The version presented here is intended for parish choirs lacking in tenor and bass singers, but with a good organ! It starts in a slightly dark, primeval way with open fifths in the organ part, developing into a minor key throughout the verses, but with a decidedly more positive feel in G major in each of the refrains. The accompaniment expresses the drama expressed in the lyrics without the choral parts becoming too involved, and the whole piece (4 1/2 minutes) ends on a celebratory Tierce de Picardy: for this is Christmas Eve!.
