Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938413). Piano Trio (B44) was written in the spring of 1991 for David Johnson and the trio which he was forming in Cologne. The work is in three movements:-1. Structures The three instruments build differing structural patterns based on a 12-note row. The violin and 'cello often complement each other, but the piano rarely joins them and tries to pull the music towards a diatonic tonal language, eventually succeeding to end in G major. The movement is in arch form, the second half being based on the retrogrades of the note row. 2. Textures Most forms of sound textures are used, including col legno and sul ponticello for the strings, while the piano occasionally employs soft-headed timpani sticks both on the keyboard and the interior of the instrument. Again the movement is in arch form, with a central section incorporating a miniature scherzo, with a trio section parodying the palm court trio style with a tune of sickly sentimentality. [ This movement may be played separately under the title Einer Kleiner Alptraum - A Little Night... mare] 3. Metamorphoses The notes which will eventually become a Scottish folk tune are hidden either in the repeated notes or in the left hand of the piano, either singly or in harmony. After a neo- classical exposition, using a serial melody, progress is quickly halted by the use of some of the notes of the folk tune being arranged into the theme of Weber's Turandot which was used by Hindemith in his Symphonic Metamorphoses . This pulls the music into a slightly more tonal frame work which becomes more pronounced after a reference to the theme of the slow movement of the Eroica symphony used in Richard Strauss' Metamorphosen. From then onwards, tonality, or rather modality, is established and the folk tune style is maintained with simplicity to the end, except for a miniscule coda reminiscent of the opening of the movement. She received a degree in commercial music the year before COVID shut everything down, at a time before climate change made blizzards an anomaly here in Central PA. As a result, snow days still existed. I spent one of them doing the first draft of “Deep River,†her favorite.Later, I decided that if singers engage a cellist for a concert, they might like to program more than one piece for them, so I chose two more water-themed spirituals to complete the set. “His Name So Sweet†is a more meditative version of the song than I’ve generally heard. I wanted the piano, cello, and briefly the voice to imitate the fountain in the text. The mood is ecstasy, resulting from the fundamental change that baptism is meant to create. “Deep River†also includes “Michael Row The Boat Ashore†and “The Water Is Wide.†The latter isn’t a spiritual, however, taken together the message is that the river is deep, the water is wide, but with (the Archangel?) Michael’s help, Jordan can be crossed. “Wade in the Water†is one of the most well-known spirituals. I focus on the idea of escaping enslavement: the opening is quiet, furtive, maybe even nervous. The Moses in the text can be understood to be Harriet Tubman, who might urge escapees to wade in the water so pursuing dogs couldn’t follow their scent. In my mind, the ending symbolizes that the party has vanished, never to be enslaved again.The first instrumental version of “Deep River†was for trumpet and piano, performed by my sister, Alicia Thompson, and her son, Justin Griffin, during a church service in Atlanta shortly after I arranged it. After hearing a recording, I took borrowed her idea of adding a repeat (which she did to allow enough time for the ushers to take up collection). The clarinet, cello and piano version was premiered by the Isosceles Trio (Doris Hall-Gulati (clarinet), Sara Male (cello), and me (piano)). When Naima Burrs, violinist and conductor of the Petersburg Symphony, asked if I had any pieces for trio, I created a version for violin, piano and cello. Please note that the YouTube version for clarinet is slightly different than the one with violin, to accommodate the differences in range.

Hoffman: Down at the cross where my Savior died, Down where for cleansing from sin I cried, There to my heart was the blood applied; Glory to His name!VIOLIN 1 plays the melody for the first verse and then the two VIOLINS alternate leading with the melody for the second verse. All notes for both VIOLINS are playable in the first position making this arrangement an excellent choice for early-intermediate string players. The PIANO accompaniment is written for an intermediate player. Published by Modrana Music Publishers Ltd (A0.966297). The Piano Trio no 1 was commissioned, premiered and recorded by the Fenice Trio in 2002. This substantial piano trio contained much of Golightly's symbolism and is festooned with the composers use of DFG codes. Stylistically, it represents a landmark in the genre development of Golightly, linked as it is to much of the melodic and harmonic language of his first symphony. I highly personal work it is only for the most advanced piano trios. The duration is 26 minutes. Score and parts.Review. Piano Trio Letters of Regret. (2001/2)David Golightly's piano trio Letters of Regret was commissioned by The Fenice Trio, composed during the summer of 2001 and completed in February 2002. The first performance took place at the Middlesbrough Theatre in June 2002. The work is in three movements (Demon, Angel and Regrets). Demon, the shortest movement of the work, opens with a rhythmical gesture from the piano, soon joined by the strings. This moderately fast movement is actually some sort of whimsical Allegretto sometimes of Russian flavour. Reviewing David's First Symphony, the composerArthur Butterworth remarked that Golightly might well be a British Shostakovich.Indeed, the Piano Trio calls the Russian composer to mind, particularly so in this slightly ironic movement that rises up to a short-lived ghostly climax abruptly cut short. Angel opens mysteriously with ethereal static string textures softly punctuated by the piano. Later, the string's sustained notes are gently accompanied by piano arpeggios. Then the strings, and later the piano, make some unsuccessful attempts at a tune, hesitantly so and with some glissandi contradicting the attempted melody. Eventually, the cello, followed by the violin, launches a sorrowful lyrical song, still disrupted by nervous interjections eventually short-lived.The Angel movement, though remains emotionally and harmonically ambiguous throughout. It too ends unobtrusively. The Demon and Angel movements actually act as a twofold introduction to the last movement. Regrets that is some sort of theme and seven variations, a series of letters, written but not sent,as the composer remarks. This predominantly lyrical, often nostalgic movement is the emotional heart of what is obviously a deeply personal statement on the composer's part. This is the piano trio arrangement of the Phoenix Waltz which was originally written to celebrate all of the musicians who played in the legendary Auchterby Band and the numerous musical line-ups born out of the ashes of that band. The Auchterby Band was a ceilidh band based in Aberdeen, Scotland which usually played fast and furious folky music for Scottish dancing at weddings, parties and various drunken events. The Phoenix Waltz is not actually particularly folky or Scottish in style (more like Jazz) but, nevertheless, works well as a last waltz of the evening. I arranged it for Piano, Violin and Cello for a fundraising concert to raise money for a new piano for our village hall and managed to rope in a couple of fantastic young musicians, through my piano teacher, to compensate for my mediocre piano playing. The piano, at that point, was borrowed and very out of tune, but the concert itself was totally unique and very special. I have included a recording from the concert which I hope you like. On listening to it I feel it is slightly rushed (I was nervous) so relax, take it easy and let it breathe!

Home on the Range is arranged here for full symphony orchestra, with and option to perform it as an audience sing-along. There is a short intro, 4 verses and choruses, and a short coda. Each verse and chorus is slightly different, like a series of variations.This arrangement was originally created for the Kansas City Symphony's Symphony in the Flint Hills event in 2022, an annual outdoor concert which traditionally ends with a crowd singing along to this, the state song of Kansas. The key is a friendly E flat, and the text is provided on the second page of the score. There are parts for:the sing-along vocal part 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B flat, 2 bassoons optional piccolo, English horn, bass clarinet, contrabassoon 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets in C, 2 trombones, bass trombone, tuba Timpani, 2 percussionists (glockenspiel, triangle, suspended cymbal), harp violin I, violin II, viola, cello, double bassI mean, it's a good tune! Score is 11 x 17 and parts are 9 x 12 size. Adobe Acrobat will easily shrink to fit letter size paper.

Rap string quartet style! Nelly's Hot In Herre still gets a lot of airplay and streams all these years on, and lends itself well to a fun boistrous string quartet, with it's instantly recognisable intro grabbing attention! For easier sight reading in places the rhythms are made subtely simpler, and this arrangement also cuts out the songs sparser 3rd verse - by then with a string quartet we felt the novelty may have been lost. So this is a slightly shorter version of the song (with still 2 full verses, choruses, and a little bit of...) - we deemed this the best structure on play through. All KoaliMusic string quartets and trios are written by string players and include bowings and dynamics - and each part prints to a single page - perfect for folders!
