German.The a cappella choral setting Der Tag, der ist so freudenreich for four-part women's choir written by the 1553-born composer Johannes Eccard from Mühlhausen in Thuringia is, indeed, a real pleasure. The German-language text is borrowed from an old Latin Christmas carol, singing of the miracle of Nativity in two verses. Eccard manages, in an engaging manner, to musically express the joyous atmosphere of this poem. All four female voices (SSAA) join imitatively in the angelic chant of joy one after the other, while central words like 'freudenreich' [joyful], 'Himmelreich' [kingdom of heaven], 'Jungfrau' [virgin] or 'Mutter' [mother] are particularly embellished. This is exhilarating and easy-to-perform utility music for Christmas church services.

Published by Edition Schwalbe (A0.1021845). Franz von Suppéwas a typical child of the multiethic Austrian.Hungarian monarchy with Italian, Dalmatian and Viennese ancestors. His full name was Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo de Suppè. He is regarded as father of the Viennese operetta. As he very often composed on bad quality librettos, most of his operettas nowadays are no more performed on stage. But many of his overtures and melodies are still popular, like this overture to the operetta Banditenstreiche (The Jolly Robbers or Bandits' Pranks), which was first performed in Vienna in April 1867. This transcription was commissioned by Wind Philharmonic Mozarteum Salzburg. This is a modern classical piece in a minimalist style although, unusually for this type of music, with strong melodic passages. Unlike the music of Steve Reich, Phillip Glass and John Adams, it is not technically difficult to play, although a degree of concentration is required when following the shifting patterns. Although minimalist in character the music is constantly changing. It opens quietly with just tubular bells, piano and oboe before ebbing and flowing through grandiose melodies, simple minimalist riffs and sweeping string portamentos. After a rousing full orchestra tutti the music gradually winds down until, like at the the beginning, we hear just piano and tubular bells, which end the piece. As mentioned above it is not difficult to play and suitable for professional and amateur orchestras alike. Perform this and remind your audience that we stand, live and breathe on God’s Earth.

The second movement raises the bar and becomes very rhythmic and syncopated with a Reich-like approach of melody vs interlocking harmony. This climax brings a high dynamic level to the forefront of the instruments with interlocking impact points being contrasted to unison hits. The third movement takes this original melody and harmony to the next level by using changing time signatures and motivic ideas to maximize the powerful ending. Throughout there is a deep sense of color and texture that can be maximized by the ensemble in new and exciting ways with each performance. This has plenty of ink, but also leaves a lot to interpret and bring the ensemble’s voice forward. I hope you enjoy! This work won the Audience Award in the Rocky Mountain Music Composition Contest in 2022 as well as Second Prize overall. These international awards were judged by a panel of seven judges from around the world, but with the competition based out of Toronto, Canada.

One Last Bar Then Joe Can Sing (1994) was commissioned by the Arts Council of Great Britain for the percussion quintet Nexus, and is a reflection on aspects of percussion history, both personal and musical. The members of Nexus are my friends (I played in the Steve Reich Ensemble along with Russ Hartenberger in 1972, the year after Nexus was formed). The piece aimed to demonstrate how a fine percussion ensmeble can be as musically expressive and subtle as, say, a string quartet. The piece starts from the last bar at the end of the second act of my opera Medea, a very short coda for a quintet of untuned percussion instruments during which the curtain falls. In this piece, however, this one apparently innocuous measure is progressively fragmented until it is taken over, little by little, by the addition of tuned percussion instruments. Eventually two metallophones (crotales and songbells) play aria-like material with bows, occasionally joined by the xylophone, and accompanied by marimba and xylophone ostinati. The piece ends with a coda in which phrases are passed from bowed vibraphone to bowed crotales, then to bowed songbells, supported by tremolos on the marimbas. The rare 3-octave songbells that Nexus owns is one of the American instrument maker J. C. Deagan's particularly fine instruments. The piece is effectively a kind of homage to Deagan, the Stradivarius of the tuned percussion world, who collaborated closely with Percy Grainger in the development of tuned percussion music between the wars. The allusions in the title are obvious: the one last bar is the last measure of music from my opera; the song is that of Deagan's songbells. In the case of Joe I wanted to link my father, Joe Bryars (who was a good amateur baritone singer) with Joseph Deagan and his songbells. Louise Farrenc was a profoundly influential French composer, performer, professor, and author. Though she would ultimately become quite a sought-after performer, her potential as a composer was recognized quite early on. Women were not permitted to enroll in conventional composition classes at the Conservatoire de Paris at the time, but, she did receive private lessons from Anton Reicha, the professor of composition there. Years later she would receive a permanent appointment as Professor of Piano at the same institution, a position she held for thirty years. She was the only woman during the 19th century to bear that title. Her piano etudes possess pedagogical value as well as great beauty and character. These works lend themselves quite well to the guitar duo setting. While I have rendered all of Farrenc’s melodies quite faithfully, I have taken liberties with the accompaniments in order to make them more idiomatic to the guitar. Likewise, many of the effects of which the guitar is capable have been brought to bear in ways that deviate from the original intent of the etude. Alternatively, the challenges that some of these etudes were meant to address for the piano student are amplified by this adaptation. For example, etude 5 is intended to enable the piano student to improve the coordination between their left and right hands. It certainly presents a challenge in that regard to the guitar duo!These selections are entirely suitable for guitarists with limited experience, though they could, of course, be beautifully realized by players with a great deal more experience as well.Louise Farrenc était une compositrice, interprète, professeur et auteure française profondément influente. Alternativement, les défis que certaines de ces études étaient censées relever pour l'étudiant en piano sont amplifiés par cette adaptation. Par exemple, l'étude 5 est destinée à permettre à l'élève de piano d'améliorer la coordination entre ses mains gauche et droite. Cela représente certainement un défi à cet égard pour le duo de guitares !Ces sélections conviennent parfaitement aux guitaristes ayant une expérience limitée, même si elles pourraient bien sûr également être magnifiquement réalisées par des musiciens beaucoup plus expérimentés
