Listen to this piece here     During the spring of 2014 four of Jupiter’s moons captured my imagination with their distinctive features as well as the powerful myths associated with each name. For Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, and Io the musical ideas I would use for each became clearer the more I researched. I chose a mixed choir to convey these ideas as the human voice can convey the awe and unknown of space more convincingly than most instruments. Each movement is intended as a vignette evoking what impacted me the most about each moon: I. Europa     Able to drive Jupiter wild with her beauty, Europa was stolen away by the god and proved bountiful to her captor. The moon may have the potential to support life and is now a primary target of our scientific efforts. This movement celebrates this vitality with driving rhythms supporting a soothing melodic line. II. Ganymede      This movement is a lament for the youth and beauty that once had male and female lovers pining for Ganymede. The moon that shares his name, however, has lost its youth and has been declared geologically dead. Written for the males of the chorus this movement features stacking triads and evokes our past where the highest and most beautiful male voices were adored.  III. Callisto      Nearly killed by her own son after Hera (Jupiter’s wife) spitefully transformed her into a bear, Callisto was a beautiful nymph who Jupiter set amongst the stars as Ursa Major. The moon itself has had its share of harm: in the heavy bombardment period it was impacted multiple times by large objects, the many craters of which are visible. I wrote this movement as if it were a reassuring lullaby and is to be performed by the female voices. A solo oboe* carries the melody over thick chords and is later intertwined with the choir.         - *While oboe is the original intent for this movement a flute or violin would make for an acceptable substitution. IV. Io     Io is a woman who suffered greatly under Jupiter’s lust and the bitterness of Hera’s jealousy. This moon represents the frustrations of suffering with its hundreds of active volcanoes and undying rumblings beneath the surface. Because of this it is one of the most tumultuous objects in our galaxy.  The choir churns forth with motives based off of diminished chords until the pressure built up can no longer be contained – eruption is imminent.- Matthew NunesWindsor, August 2014.

Published by S. W. Lussing (A0.923849). Here's an old jazz standard that will live forever because it is so much fun to sing and listen to. Lullaby in Birdland is one of this guitar player's favorites. It was originally written in 2/2, or Cut time, which is how a song written in basic 4/4 timing is notated when it is intended that any performance of it should bring a little bounce to the beat. I'm all for that, but I have a rule of thumb for any song which has enough bounce, that it can be waltzed to, and this song is no exception, so I've reformatted it to the appropriate time signature. The notation in this arrangement is in fact how the song is currently being sung. I play this arrangement at about 80 beats per minute on the guitar. The chords in this arrangement are how I play Lullaby in Birdland, and they aren't too far a departure from the original by George Shearing.

Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel) This absolutely gorgeous song was written by Billy Joel in response, I believe, to his young daughter asking him what happens when people die and, as he didn’t believe in the afterlife, he was trying to avoid answering her. I was asked to arrange this as a duet with a cello and a ‘smattering of (SSA) choir.’ As I was listening to recordings of this song, a second voice emerged for me, possibly someone who has passed on, calmly lulling the child to sleep whilst her father is trying to distract her from her questions. This was indeed the interpretation felt by people I played it to who found it very moving. This version has been reformatted for male voices, so duet, cello, smattering of TTBB. I hope you enjoy it. Included in this pack are a full score, vocal score and cello part with what I hope are useful cues for you to navigate your way around the piece. This playful arrangement of Lullaby of Birdland by George Shearing (concert Ab) for voice and 3 horn ( alto sax, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, and drums ) is unique from many arrangements of this jazz standard by weaving complimentary melodies around the vocal melody, giving this piece a welcome breath of fresh air. The 10-bar intro has a rhythmic push in the piano reminiscent of Jamiroquai’s Virtual Insanity that intensifies the listener’s anticipation to hear the first few notes of this familiar tune in a new and unique context. Returning back to the head via a simple D.S. enables instrumentalists to easily focus on solos rather than the form. The 2-bar rhythm-section outro concludes the piece precisely and cleanly and takes the listener back to the time when jazz bands were first cooking up storms on the dance floors. Though cited with tempo at a quarter note = 160 bpm, this arrangement works well at any bpm between 140 and 170.Other than for the introduction and the ending, the piano part includes chords and rhythmic notation throughout for easy improvisation. The bass part includes both an intermediate-advanced written part and chords throughout, thus accommodating bassists at all skill levels and/or those who would prefer to play a combination of written and improvised bass lines. The drum chart is to be improvised throughout; however, it includes suggested rhythmic ideas and indicates key points in the arrangement such as horn hits, repeats, and fills. PLEASE NOTE: For ease of identifying parts, the forthcoming audio clip furnishes a piano playing the vocal melody. The piano chart does not include the melody. About the Arranger: Serena Rose is a professional musician who performs weekly in the greater Los Angeles area. She has a master's in music composition and has composed three large works for the Orange Coast College Wind Ensemble as well as various smaller ensembles based in Los Angeles.

Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel) This absolutely gorgeous song was written by Billy Joel in response, I believe, to his young daughter asking him what happens when people die and, as he didn’t believe in the afterlife, he was trying to avoid answering her. I was asked to arrange this as a duet with a cello and a ‘smattering of (SSA) choir.’ As I was listening to recordings of this song, a second voice emerged for me, possibly someone who has passed on, calmly lulling the child to sleep whilst her father is trying to distract her from her questions. This was indeed the interpretation felt by people I played it to who found it very moving. I hope you enjoy it. Included in this pack are a full score, vocal score and cello part with what I hope are useful cues for you to navigate your way around the piece. Other formats will be available shortly with more choir involvement and for those without access to a cello.

Johannes Brahms is best known for his symphonies, concerti and large scale chamber works, but his catalog of over 200 Lieder shows he was also a master of small forms and intimate expression. Wiegenlied (Lullaby), included in this set of arrangements for string quartet, is one of the best known and most loved melodies ever written. His original gently syncopated accompaniment, reproduced here, makes an elegant backdrop for it. The set opens with Sapphische Ode (Sapphic Ode), whose title is not directly connected to the ancient Greek poet Sappho of Lesbos, but refers to the verse form of the poem Brahms set, that bears her name. The melody resembles the theme of the slow movement from Brahms’s violin concerto, written a few years earlier. Following it is Wenn du nur zuweilen lächelst (If you only sometimes smile), a fine example of the mood of longing and melancholy that Brahms often depicted in both songs and instrumental music. The music moves back and forth between major and minor, and the flowing 9/8 meter occasionally varies the 3+3+3 pulse to 2+2+2+3 in a natural-seeming way.Brahms never wrote an opera, but Von ewiger Liebe (Of Eternal Love), which builds from a somber opening, through a stormy middle section to a powerful climax, gives us a sense of what a Brahms operatic scene, in this case a love duet, might have sounded like. It is one of his most famous songs, and rightly so.CYPRESS PUBLISHING is pleased to be the imprint for arrangements for string ensemble by Stephen Levintow. He is a free lance professional violist and violinist specializing in chamber music, who began making string quartet and trio arrangements for wedding, party and corporate events, to expand the repertory or to improve on existing versions. The goal is to produce high-quality, musically satisfying arrangements faithful to the composer’s original material, yet sight-readable in most cases by working professionals or intermediate to advanced students. It has a Celtic feel and the songs are from several different countries - United States, Ireland, England, France, Germany, Scotland, Italy. There are 8 songs included, 2 originals, 2 medleys and 4 songs that you know and love included also. All of the songs are in SATB with an (optional) accent instrument part (choice of flute, violin or cello - parts included at the end of each score) - the score has the flute part so you can see where the accent instrument fits into the score. A simple piano part is included in each score. The voices and accent instruments help to complete the entire piece. You can also purchase individual songs on here separately if you choose to not purchase the whole cantata. However, it is a bargain to purchase the cantata.
