Ravel's Mother Goose was composed in 1908 as a suite of five piano duets for the children of his friends, the Godebski's. They are based on the well-known story first published in 1697. In 1911 Ravel arranged them in a longer format for a ballet orchestra. The music has a magical childlike quality to it of innocence and simplicity. The group of five pieces are entitled: 1. Pavane of the Sleeping Beauty in the forest 2. Little Tom Thumb 3. Laideronnette, Empress of the Pagodas 4. Conversation between Beauty and the Beast 5. The Enchanted Garden Ralph Sauer has worked his magic on this masterpiece, creating an extraordinary arrangement for Trombone and Piano. For advanced performers and about 16 minutes in length.

Ukrainian and Soviet composer, Viktor Kosenko (1896-1938), was a highly regarded concert pianist, concertmaster and educator. Kosenko began his formal training at the St. Petersburg Conservatory as a composition student of Mikhail Sokolovsky. While in school he served as concertmaster of the Marinsky Theatre. Aleksandr Glazunov, the Director the Conservatory, was greatly impressed with Kosenko and spoke highly of his work.  Regarded by his contemporaries as a master of lyricism, his first compositions were markedly influenced by the works of composers such as Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Tchaikovsky and his fellow Ukrainian Mykola Lysenko.  During his short career he composed over 100 works for piano in a total of about 250 musical works. Other works include his symphonic Moldavian poem, choral and folk music arrangements, violin and piano concertos, trios and string quartets. During the 1930s Kosenko became dedicated to writing music for children. His first compositions for children were Four Children’s Pieces for piano (1930; this arranger has scored these four works for violin and piano, flute and piano, and cello and piano, as well as string orchestra). This string duet arrangement (for VIOLIN and CELLO) uses the hymn tune by Peter C. Lutkin. Set in a minor key, the solemn, reflective melody matches the deeply thought-provoking lyrics (see below). Though the lyrics may seem archaic at first, by reading through the words and meditating on the meaning, the beauty of the message becomes clear. This arrangement for three like instruments (soprano recorders, flutes, oboes, etc.) explores the traditional haunting lullaby with tinges of sadness, lightness, and beauty. In Variation 1, the standard melody is enhanced with embellishments and accompanied by arpeggios in the third voice. Variation 2 is a steady swing in 6/8 time. Variation 3 is a rhythmic section that feels somewhat like a Scottish reel. Variation 4 is light and sprightly, with all voices playing eighth notes in unison. Variation 5 ends the piece as a soft, pretty finale. This arrangement is best suited for advanced musicians. Run time is approximately 5:05. A live multitrack MP3 recording, performed by the arranger on soprano recorders, is included on this page.
