Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1359972). “Lord Jesus, Think on Me†is a translation and free paraphrase of a 5th-century poem by Synesius of Cyrene (ca. 375-414), Bishop of Ptolemais in north Africa and contemporary of Augustine, Bishop of Hippo (354-430). Synesius was a public servant and statesman, a neo-Platonic philosopher and poet. In 410, he was popularly chosen as Bishop of Ptolemais, a position he reluctantly accepted, as his views on certain beliefs of the church, including the soul's creation, a literal resurrection, and the end of the world (eschatos) were unorthodox. In the last of 10 odes Synesius authored, he describes himself bowing humbly in the presence of Christ. In the 1930s, a literal prose translation of the ode was made by the Anglican cleric Harold Costley-White:Be mindful, Christ Son of Godwho rules on high, of thy servant,sinful of heart, who wrote these words.And grant to me release from passions breeding death,which are inborn in my unclean soul.But give me to behold, Saviour Jesus,thy divine brightness, wherein appearingI shall sing a song,to the healer of souls,to the healer of limbs,with the great Fatherand the Holy Spirit.Amen. The text of this setting for SATB voices and organ selects verses from a free paraphrase of that ode, crafted by the Anglican priest and scholar, Allen William Chatfield (1808-1896) and published in his Songs and Hymns of Earliest Greek Christian Poets (1876):Lord Jesus, think on me and purge away my sin; from earthborn passions set me free, and make me pure within. Lord Jesus, think on me, nor let me go astray; through dark-ness and perplexity point Thou the heav'nly way.Lord Jesus, think on me amid the battle's strife; in all my pain and misery be Thou my Health and Life.Lord Jesus, think on me with many a care oppressed; let me Thy loving servant be and taste Thy promised rest.Lord Jesus, think on me that I may sing above to Fa-ther, Spirit, and to Thee the strains of praise and love.The incipit of each verse, “Lord Jesus, think on [remember] me, recalls the words of the penitent thief to Jesus at their crucifixion, and the petitions for guidance, forgiveness, and succor make this a fitting anthem for the penitential season of Lent. ©Copyright 2024 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Moreover, it also reaffirms that the believer is choosing to build their life and future upon the Chief Cornerstone, whom is Jesus. The setting gives opportunities for soprano and alto solos though they can be sung tutti if more appropriate. The keyboard part is essential though there are two a cappella sections in the arrangement. The vocal parts all lie easily within average range. The keyboard part, with its plodding bass line (which may be doubled on double bass if required) gives the impression of the slow walk of Jesus to the Cross. This is a melancholy, reflective arrangement. Other SSA titles in this series of three Easter canticles are “My Song is Love Unknown†(Text by Samuel Crossman 1624-1683) and “A Time to Watch, A time to Pray (Text by John Mason Neale 1818-1866â€. The title of this collection was inspired by the words found in Ephesians 5:19 (KJV) -- Speaking…in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord… This collection contains 10 hymns arranged for a one octave, 13-note chromatic scale Handbell choir with Piano accompaniment. For each song, the Piano provides an introduction then the Handbells play the melody and occasional 2-part harmony. Most songs include an optional repeat and second ending in case a longer song is desired. For each song, there is a combined score with both instruments (Handbells and Piano) on a grand staff plus two separate scores for the Handbells (one in standard format with black and white notes and the second with color-coded notes). The color-coded scores are enlarged so the colors are easier to distinguish and all sharps and flats are displayed (shown in the key of C) as reminders for beginning ringers. A color-coded note chart is also provided for each song which shows the Handbell notes used as well as the number of times each note is played. The note distribution is helpful when assigning notes to ringers. You may want to assign fewer notes to beginners or evenly distribute the bells between all ringers. Arranged for Brass Quartet, Jesus Christ Is Risen Today was first written in Latin titled Surrexit Christus hodie, as a Bohemian hymn in the 14th century by an unknown author on manuscripts written in Munich and Breslau. In Latin, it had eleven verses. It was first translated into English in 1708 by John Baptist Walsh to be included in his Lyra Davidica (Collection of Divine Songs and Hymns). The verses of the hymn were revised in 1749 by John Arnold. Initially the hymn only had three verses translated with just the first verse being a direct translation; in 1740 Charles Wesley (one of the founders of Methodism) added a fourth verse to the hymn as an alternative, which was later adopted into the hymn as part of it. The hymn is also noted for having Alleluia as a refrain after every line.The hymn is set to a piece of music entitled Easter Hymn which was composed in the Lyra Davidica for Jesus Christ Is Risen Today. There was a later version of Easter Hymn composed by William Henry Monk which is also used for Jesus Christ Is Risen Today. Some denominations of Christianity often just use one while some use both. The hymn is sometimes confused with Christ the Lord Is Risen Today, which was written by Wesley.
