Artaria Editions AE436Joseph Martin Kraus was one of the most gifted and unusual composers of the 18th century, whose talent for thematic development, colourful orchestration and theatrical flair caused Haydn to proclaim him one of only two 'geniuses' he knew (Mozart being the other one). Although Kraus's focus as a composer was mainly upon works written for the stage, he had occasion and opportunity to write a variety of works for chamber setting, including this sonata for violin and fortepiano. It is not known for whom this work was written, but the sole surviving source, a set of parts in Uppsala University Library in the hand of Fredrik Silverstolpe, Kraus's first biographer and assiduous collector of his music, dates it to Kraus's grand tour; he notes that it was written in Paris in 1785. This sonata is the most virtuosic and imposing work in this genre that the composer wrote. Of particular interest is the use of a slow introduction with lyrical violin solo, the long Adagio with its alternating solo passages, and the playful final Scherzo which bears a thematic similarity to the now-lost original third movement of Kraus's Violin Concerto (VB 151). Indeed, this complex work merits the rubric Great C major.Allan Badley.

Published by Sneakwood Editions (A0.1266695). Giorgio Gentili was surely one of the most influential musicians in Venice at the beginning of the 18th century. In 1702, or even earlier, he was appointed maestro di instromenti at the prestigious Ospedale dei Mendicanti in Venice, where musicians such as Legrenzi, Biffi and Galuppi worked. In 1689 he became a violinist in the San Marco orchestra and shortly after, in 1691, he was appointed concertmaster. Under his direction he had musicians like Veracini or Giovanni Battista Vivaldi and Antonio Vivaldi. Surely this fact is related to the notable influence of Gentili's concerti on those of Antonio Vivaldi.Gentili's departure from the Ospedale dei Mendicanti in 1717 coincides with the departure to Dresden of other famous Venetian musicians such as Lotti, which gives rise to the suspicion that Gentili was also hired along with these musicians by the Elector of Saxony during his trip to Italy.Gentili was one of those rare musicians who only played instrumental music, at least as far as we know. Gentili published six volumes of music:Op. 1. Suonate a tre, 1701Op. 2. Concerti da camera a tre, 1702Op. 3. Capricci da camera a violino e violoncello o cimbalo, 1707Op. 4. Suonate a tre (lost)Op. 5. Concerti a quattro e cinque, 1708Op. 6. Concerti a quattro, 1716Apart from this work, we find two interesting manuscripts in the Library of the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory in Venice that contain the only two known sonatas for cello and basso continuo by Gentili.

Parts of a world lost forever but treasured in the adult soul.From First Day, First Page of the diary and Sunday’s Joybells to the Bittersweet morning dances and the Calm of a Sunny Afternoon, from A Sudden Absence and a Strange Question to the Loneliness and Dream, from the imaginary Indian Dance to the Walkin’ on a Rainy Day and from March of the Goose to the Flowers’ Waltz, Lullaby and Farewell Song, these Diary of a Child pages unfold the thread of a very well known memory, a memory of us all.These 30 short piano pieces were composed between 2003 and 2007. Some of them are compositions of inspired children, composer’s pupils, like Orsaki Roussetou and Plato Tsoukatos-Pontikis.This collection is dedicated to all composer’s pupils and especially toy Nikos Karidis, the grown up child who gave me the opportunity to write most of the pieces presented. The work was recorded by Dimitra Mane on cd for the upcoming edition.. Jeux pour Deux for two pianos (2007)A work of neoclassical character with influences from jazz idiom. It is dedicated to the piano duo Dimitra Mane – Andy Miliory and to Maurice Ravel in the musical style of whom there are intentional references - by which was performed at Athenaeum Concert Hall Athens in 2008. The third movement from the four movement 'Suite in Sea' written for clarinet and piano by Kara Williams, 'Brew Time March' has been orchestrated for wind ensemble by the composer and has since proven to be a favourite with performers and audiences. We follow a young sailor as they excitedly hear the bugle call to have a break from work (brew time), grab a coffee (brew) and sit on the bow to watch the waves… lost in thoughts, the young sailor unexpectedly hears the sound of work recommencing, and scurries back, making it just in the nick of time… waiting eagerly for next the next call for Brew Time!  Opening with the 'Stand Easy' (break time) bugle call, Brew Time March is full of familiarly-sea-worthy sounds, and is a fun concert march that would be a great addition to any ensemble's library. In the style of a traditional military march, unless otherwise specified, notes should be played slightly detached throughout. Ensure the bass solo has plenty of attitude, and the rhythmic accompanying parts let the melodies breathe. Use a small set of crash cymbals (if parade-style cymbals are not available) - your percussionist will thank you! Also, hit the cymbals together slightly off-centre for zing and dynamic control, and hold the edges of the cymbals against the body to choke the ring where indicated. Keep this march a very steady two-feel throughout; however, feel free to completely stress the upper woodwinds out by going as fast as musically possible where marked at the end :-) Brew Time March runs for around 2:45 and is scored for full wind ensemble; however, it will work without one, some, or all the following parts: piccolo, 4th clarinet, baritone sax, bass clarinet, bassoon, horns in F, and bass trombone.

Key: A major.The autograph of this sonata, composed in 1789, was initially extant in Bückeburg under the title of 'Sonata per il Cembalo o Piano-Forte et Violoncello obligato' but was lost in the Second World War. The version then published was merely a substantially revised version which had been transposed to D major. Our new edition reconstructs the work's original state (in A major), taking the common performance practice principles of articulation and dynamics into account. A rewarding, yet fairly easy piece suitable for lessons and concerts which can be regarded as an important link to Beethoven's sonatas.
