Published by Lou Bear Publishing (A0.1033113). This solo explores the topic of toxic masculinity and the facades that men show to the world. Internal conflict and emotion are portrayed through careful articulations, bold dynamics from the soloist, and a variety of textural techniques such as col legno and pizzicato. Two themes are introduced initially, followed by a development section that devolves in violence and chaotic forms of the thematic content. The end of the piece gives a momentary restatement of the secondary theme and a melancholy hint at the primary theme that is left unfinished.

Bear SongPooh’s Serenade (2002) for bassoon, cello, and piano was commissioned by hrCMEfor Arts First 2002. The work is dedicated to Lembit Beecher, in appreciation forwhat he has done for the ensemble. The “Pooh†of the title is, of course, Winnie-the-Pooh, the lovable bear from A. A. Milne’s books of stories, Winnie-the-Pooh (1926)and The House at Pooh Corner (1928).The work is cast in two short movements. The basic musical material is sharedbetween the movements. Each is inspired by a different one of Pooh’s “songs.†Thefirst movement, Cloud Song, was inspired by Pooh’s song as he pretends to be acloud, floating through the air tied to a balloon – attempting to fool some bees as hesteals their honey. The second movement, Bear Song, is inspired by one of Pooh’shappiness songs: “Sing Ho! for the life of a Bear!“This work may be performed in one of two ways: (1) The movements may be playedtogether as a chamber piece. The notes above should be printed in the program – andpossibly the texts as well. Herbert Kaufman's 1910 book The Winning Fight inspired this winning march (it's a book about self-mastery and fostering a can-do attitude). Tiis march was published by Leo Feist in New York City in 1911.Arrangement of a March by Abe Holzmann (1874-1939), writthn in 1911. He also wrote what is probably his best known march Blaze Away''.Blaze Away! is a 1901 march by the German-American composer Abe Holzmann. It was his greatest success.Holzmann was inspired by the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish–American War, when a command to American sailors to open fire on the Spanish fleet was reputedly met with the response Well boys, let's blaze away by the gunners. Building on the war fever in the United States, the cover of the sheet music featured an image resembling Theodore Roosevelt charging at San Juan Hill. Very popular as a two-step, its success outlasted the war and it became a repertoire piece amongst military bands around the world.Abraham Holzmann (19 August 1874 – 16 January 1939) was an American composer, famous for his march Blaze-Away! Abraham Holzmann was born in New York City. His parents were Jacob Holzmann, a Hungarian-Jewish immigrant and Isabella Holzmann, a native of Louisiana. The young Holzmann learned music in Germany. A review originally published by the New York Herald on Sunday, 13 January 1901, entitled German Composer who Writes American Cakewalk Music describes [h]is knowledge of bass and counterpoint is thorough, and his standard compositions bear the stamp of harmonic lore, which makes his proclivity for the writing of the popular style of music the more remarkable. Abe married Isabelle Fishblatt around 1908, and he became the manager of the Orchestra Department at Jerome Remick & Company, music publisher in New York. He was an early member (1923) of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). He earned his livelihood as composer/arranger for Tin Pan Alley publishers, including Leo Feist. He later was advertising manager for the American Federation of Musicians publication, International Musician. He was a member of Freemasonry, the Elks, and Knights of Pythias, all in New York City. Holzmann died in East Orange, New Jersey at age 64. He was survived by his widow, a daughter Natalie Holzmann, three half-brothers, and four sisters. His music was especially revered by ragtime enthusiasts, although he composed marches, waltzes, and other light music. His 1899 composition Smokey Mokes was briefly featured in the 1936 movie San Francisco.

Theconcerto bears the dedication “for Walter Simmons, a hero for the cause of American music.â€Musicologist Walter Simmons has been an inspirational and passionate advocate for seriousAmerican concert music for nearly his entire life. Through his tireless efforts as author, critic, recordand concert producer, and lecturer, Walter has brought myriad composers and works to muchdeservedattention.The basic musical material for the entire work is presented near the outset, the pitches Eb – D – G –Ab – E. This cell is used throughout the rest of the concerto both motivically, in transformation, andas a harmonic structural device. Its harmonic identity creates the mix of tonal/modal and atonalconstructs that are a preoccupation of my music. The concerto’s title provided the poetic ideabehind the musical development. Though more or less equal with the ensemble in the firstmovement, the piano clearly takes over as leader in the second and third movements as the goaldirectedformal narrative of the movements becomes more obvious.The first movement, Murky Waters, is a free fantasy in which the piano and ensemble “unpack†themusical potential of the basic material. A number of melodic ideas emerge—some lyrical and somedisjunct. A brief coda prepares for the next movement.The second movement, The Forgotten, is a lament led by the piano. The harmonic colors of thepiano’s sustaining sounds interact with the more linear textures of the winds and brass.The third movement, Casting Infinity, is purposeful and structured as a march with trio.
