Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810822). Ralph Sauer has beautifully edited Volume II of the Milde Concert Studies. They will add much to the Trombone study/etude literature. We look forward to many performers using these valuable studies to improve their technique and musicianship. Originally written for the bassoon, these studies were favorites of the great trombone teacher, Emory Remington (1891-1971). While perhaps not concert material, they provide much more musical interest than the typical étude book. I have added dynamics and changed phrasings to be more suitable for the trombone while keeping the wide tessitura and the many clef changes of the original. Alternate positions are included to make the music more fluid. I have not indicated whether an alternate position is to be played slightly higher or lower. The trombonist should know what adjustments are needed, and adding the small sharps or flats would only clutter the notation. These enjoyable and challenging studies will provide many hours of pleasurable practice. I have returned to these two volumes often over the years and hope that you will also find them useful and rewarding. Ralph Sauer

Gordon Cherry #4764795. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792262). Franz Schubert was the master composer of the German Art Song or Lied. Auf dem Strom (On the River) was written in 1828, just a year after Beethoven's death. With the performance of this and other works at a concert promoting his music, Schubert reached the zenith of his popularity in a career which was tragically cut short only a little while later. Mr. Sauer has beautifully transcribed this work in the key of E-flat (original key of E major) for Trombone, Horn & Piano. The Trombone performs the Tenor voice part of the trio. A substitute Trombone part has also been supplied for the Horn part. The lyrics of the poem, written by Ludwig Rellstab have been included with the score to better allow the performers an understanding of soul of the work. About 7 minutes in length for advanced performers. This transcription was first performed by Ralph Sauer and Hornist Stefan Dohr (Berlin Philharmonic) at the Melbourne International Festival of Brass.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792475). This work is the third from a collection of five short pieces Beethoven wrote for Flötenuhr or mechanical clock, discovered a number of years after his death. Their true origin was uncovered by Professor Albert Kopfermann, a German musician/librarian, who solved the mystery about their instrumentation. This delightful Allegro movement has been transposed into the key of D from G and arranged for moderately advanced performers by Ralph Sauer. Your audience will love this little gem as the clock slows down and stops before the final cadence. It will make a great encore piece.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792437). Beethoven’s two duos were originally written for Clarinet and Cello, but are often performed with Bassoon. They were published without an opus and were probably intended as gifts for friends or to be performed at a private chamber music soireé. Mr. Sauer’s arrangements are delightful to play. Duos 1 & 2 have three movements; the first in the traditional Sonata form, the second a slow movement Larghetto and third movement a zippy Rondo. Duo 3 begins with a first movement Allegro and the second movement is an Aria with Variations, having a quick gigue-like Allegro tacked on to the end.These duos may be performed by Tenor and Bass Trombone or 2 Tenors, with the 2nd part needing an f-attachment to reach down for some D’s and C’s. The first parts are all in Tenor clef and these threee works are of moderate difficulty.

It was composed during Beethoven's mature period, when he was about 53 years old. It has the following musical form : Measures 1-16: Theme in the main key of G minor Measures 17-32: Contrasting section in the key of E flat Major Measures 33-36: Transition modulating back to G minor Measures 37-52: Theme returns, in G minor, with its second phrase slightly varied Measures 53-65: Codetta in G minor Measures 66-end: Conclusion in C minor, based on the first fragment of the theme, with an unusual ending on the dominant chord (G) of the key of C minor Obs.: There are some modifications to be noted: Measure 20: the autograph as well as the Clementi & Co. edition (London, 1823) have parallel Ab4-G4 on the first two beats of the right hand. In this arrangement you'll see F4-Eb4 as in the Sauer & Liedersdorf (Vienna, 1824) edition Measure 65: the autograph has a quarter rest on the first beat of the right hand, and the G5 on the second beat. The Vienna 1824 edition has G5 on the first beat and the rest on the second beat Measure 72: the Vienna 1824 edition and the Schlesinger edition show arpeggiations in both hands here, which do not appear in the autograph.
