My Saxophone and Me consists of fourteen short and delightful pieces written especially for absolute beginners up to students at elementary level. The book comes in two versions, one for B flat saxophones and the other for E flat instruments. However, for obvious reasons you cannot mix B flat and E flat instruments in the same group. The pieces are intended as supplementary material to your usual tutor books. The music can be used with any number of players and the pieces remain in the lower register. Several early pieces use only the notes B, A and G and the key of G major predominates. Six of the pieces use only half notes (minims) and quarter notes (crotchets). The low C, a tricky note for some beginners, has been avoided almost completely. On the one occasion it appears, the note C an octave above is given as optional. Although the pieces are arranged in approximate order of difficulty you can play them in any order you want, depending on the musical needs of the student. Your students are sure to enjoy these pieces, which are both easy on the fingers and easy on the ear! Several pieces have a few measures (bars) rest in the middle not only to give the player a break and add musical contrast but also to give the experience of counting empty bars during the music. When space allows, piano cues appear in the solo part. Some of the later pieces in the book have good performing potential and could be strung together in any order to create a small suite. Every piece has a short piano introduction so that the student can sense the tempo and musical style before playing. The keyboard accompaniments have been kept as simple as possible with the minimum number of notes. Dynamic markings (e.g. piano and mezzo-forte) are used from the start, but phrasing has been omitted from the solo part. This is because the teacher is usually in the best position to suggest phrasing within the physical capabilities of each student. Slurs have been employed sparingly and only when necessary. An MP3 file of all the piano accompaniments is also available as a separate item. The official anthem of the Canary Islands, arranged for Brass Quintet & Percussion.A region of Spain, the anthem used in the Canaries for official local occasions was introduced on May 30 (Canary Islands Day), 2003. It is an adaptation of a local folk song called Arrorró (Lullaby).Before the official announcement of the anthem unofficial local songs were in place, and tended to differ depending on the person’s political beliefs. In this arrangement the bassoon mainly leads, but when the melody moves to the piano the bassoon has an attractive counter-melody. Ideal High School student repertoire and with a performance duration of around two and a half minutes, a great recital piece. The full score has phrasing suggested and a one page bassoon part attached. I inadvertently discovered that the poet Friedrich Rückert who penned Kindertodtenlieder (yes, with a d ... LOL!) wrote 400-plus of these KTL poems after his two youngest children died of scarlet fever. I bought the book @ Amazon. After plowing through 442 of them, I winnowed it down to ten poems for my song cycle. It is scored for soprano and piano. NB: I cannot afford an orchestra, and it would be too much unnecessary work. LOL!!! The entire song cycle has a duration of ca. 35 minutes. It ends like a mechanical music box while the soprano sings a lullaby. Sleep is of course a perfect metaphor for being dead. Lullay, mine liking is a Middle English lyric poem or carol of the 15th century which frames a narrative describing an encounter of the Nativity with a song sung by the Virgin Mary to the infant Christ. The refrain is an early example of an English lullaby; the term lullaby is thought to originate with the lu lu or la la sound made by mothers or nurses to calm children, and by or bye bye, another lulling sound (for example in the similarly ancient Coventry Carol)There are a number of surviving medieval English verses associated with the birth of Jesus which take the form of a lullaby, of which this is probably the most famous example. Written by an anonymous hand, the text is found uniquely in Sloane MS 2593, a collection of medieval lyrics now held in the British Library.My arrangement is transcribed from Gustav Holst's setting of the text, which he calls Lullay, My Liking.It is number 2 from Holst's 4 Carols for Unaccompanied Choir Op.34Arranged wind quintetThe solo verses are played by oboe, flute, clarinet,oboe and bassoon together and finally horn.The refrain has been arranged in a differnt instrumental line up each time it is played.

I composed my second guitar sonata in 2010. Guitar Sonata No. 2 in C major is six pages long, has two movements, and its estimated performance time is 8:30 to 9:00. The first movement, Inner Visions & Power Puffs, is a zippy sonata form opening with a 12-bar blues Theme 1. After a conventional modulating transition Theme 2 appears in the traditional key of G major. The title of the movement alludes to the Stevie Wonder album Innervisions and, of course, the Powerpuff Girls. The sonata form has a climax by way of three Bartok pizzicati on the dominant pedal to depict the girls defeating Mojo Jojo and putting him in jail. The second movement is a lullaby with variations. The lullaby is an original song I used to sing for one of my nieces to help her fall asleep. The complete sonata has been recorded by Daniel Estrem and is available on the Magnatune release Estrem Plays Lawson.http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/estrem-estremlawson/I played movement 1 at a Seattle Classic Guitar Society open mic in 2012 on a warm summer Friday night and there were kids playing and screaming in the background, which helped set the mood of the sonata rather than break it.

I composed Suite Grandkids in 2005. It was a set of six pieces scored for classical guitar trio, one for each of the grandkids that I had at that time. A second round of grandkids came in 2013 and 2016, so I decided to compose another set of guitar trios. I used pieces composed by their father (my son Richard) as the harmonic foundation for both pieces, adding new melodies and additional harmonies. Performance time for the set is 11 minutes, but each piece could stand alone on a concert program. Demand level is intermediate. This recording has the composer performing all three parts.
