Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576653). Very sad poem by Paul Maertens about a child he came to know from his medical practice. The mother was unmarried and ashamed and tried to ignore the child as if it were a reproach to her, the child became autistic and unable to react to others. This setting for alto voice, cello and guitar reflect the mood of the poem in all its sadness. The sound sample is a performance by the composer, with Chris Benson on cello. (The guitar's 6th string is tuned to D - much use is made of 12th and 19th (or 7th if preferred) fret harmonics) The pdf file contains score and parts. An instrumental version of the the music, entitled Promenade d'hiver (viola, cello and guitar), is also available on this site. It is sung in French, but for convenience I am providing an English translation below (not for performance purposes). Ta Maman, p'tit gars, ne te désirait pas.Maintenant tu ouvres les robinets, et vois l'eau couler sans vouloir la saisir.Ta Maman a nié son attente. Now you roll your toy car around, without playing or smiling or speaking. Your mummy has gone and you didn't cry. You've left your car somewhere and you arrange the cubes in front of you, always in the same order, simply, without anguish, without happiness. You are not living , little one. Wake up little chap!

The Suite for guitar aims to blend tradition and modernity through the use of a language with a neobaroque imprint.The canonical utilization of the fixed dances of the Suite (Allemande, Courante, Sarabande and Gigue preceded by an introductory Prelude) serves as a clear reference to the corresponding Baroque model characterized by alternation between slow and fast movements. The style, on the other hand, appears to be moderately dissonant, yet still focused on a well-defined tonal framework. A personal use of both dissonances and modulations is intended to enhance the auditory experience while maintaining a strong connection to a specific tonal center (E), which serves as a stable reference point in the organization of the musical material.La Suite pour guitare vise à mêler tradition et modernité à travers l’utilisation d’un langage à l’empreinte néobaroque.L’utilisation canonique des « danses fixes » de la Suite (Allemande, Courante, Sarabande et Gigue précédées d’un Prélude introductif) sert de référence claire au modèle baroque correspondant caractérisé par une alternance entre mouvements lents et rapides.Le style, en revanche, semble modérément dissonant, tout en restant centré sur une structure tonale bien définie. J'aime les formes musicales concises telles que le Prélude et la Fugue, où il y a une idée claire et directe, suivie d'une autre plus complexe et développée.Conformément à cette idée, cette œuvre se compose de deux pièces distinctes, la première - Transfigured Life - vise à attirer l'auditeur avec son rythme rapide et dansant et sa partie de violon simple et mélodique. Il se «transfigure» via quelques courts intermèdes au piano solo en seulement deux notes alternées pour terminer - qui sont le cœur de l'idée originale, maintenant clarifiée en effaçant tout le reste.Le deuxième morceau - Still Life - conserve son sentiment de quiétude grâce à une ligne de piano simple qui laisse beaucoup d'espace à la partie contrastée (mais encore une fois simple) du violon. En tant que pièce absolue et non programmatique, le titre fait référence uniquement à la couleur et au rythme atmosphériques ; c'est à l'auditeur de voir la « nature morte » de son choix dans son esprit.Une note sur les performances :Malgré ma référence à des lignes « simples » et l'évitement déterminé par l'œuvre des grincements modernistes traditionnels, l'œuvre présente certains défis d'exécution en termes de phrasé et d'ensemble qui nécessitent des compétences et une musicalité considérables. In keeping with that idea, this work consists of two distinct pieces, the first - Transfigured Life - aims to draw in the listener with its quick, dancing rhythm and simple, melodic violin part. It 'transfigures' via a few short solo piano interludes into just two alternating notes to end - which are the core of the original idea, now made clear by clearing everything else out of the way.The second piece - Still Life - retains its sense of stillness through an uncomplicated piano line that gives lots of space for the violin's contrasting (but again simple) part. As an absolute, not programmatic, piece the title refers to the atmospheric colour and pacing only; it's up to the listener to see 'Still life' of their choosing in their own mind.A note on performance: Despite my reference to 'simple' lines, and the work's determined avoidance of mainstream modernist squeak - the work has certain performance challenges of phrasing and ensemble that requires considerable skill and musicianship. Joaquín Malats's Serenata Española was premiered at the Salon Érard in Barcelona on 22 September 1891,[1] and was published by Zozaya a year later. Despite what it may seem from the initial title on the cover of the Suite Impresiones de España, this work was never performed as a suite for orchestra. Originally conceived as a collection in which the Serenade was the second of the pieces, only this one was published in addition to the first one: Danza. Joaquim Malats performed these two compositions in numerous concerts as part of the Suite Impresiones de España,[2] however, he neither published them as a unitary corpus, nor did the ochestral version see the light. The suite was initially dedicated to the great writer Benito Pérez Galdós, who was also a personal friend of the composer. This edition aims to provide a new vision of the work by contrasting the first two arrangements that were made, by Tárrega and by his disciple Severino García Fortea, with the original piano source, paying special attention to include agogics, dynamics and phrasing arcs indications in the piano font and to the maintenance of the original structure of the work. It was his work with Jean-Albert Villard, the organist of the Cliquot organ of the Cathedral of Poitiers which would determine his vocation as an organist. Jacques Dussouil continued his studies in Paris with Noëlie Pierront and especially with Edouard SouberbielleHis duties at the Royan Cathedral lead him to also become a choral director and composer, founding one of the best Cathedral Choirs in France which he directed for many years.
