Mystery of the Hills is an S.A.T.B. choral work describing the wonder of the Flint Hills, a region in East Central Kansas.  I’m not a native Kansan, but whenever I drive through this area, I am enthralled by the infinite sense of expanse and gently rolling terrain. Geologists believe there was an inland seaway that covered central North America starting 290 million years ago. Over time, alternating layers of hard limestone and softer shale rocks formed. It is believed erosion caused the varied elevations of terrain, unique to the slopes of the Flint Hills. These surface layers of limestone and chert prevented the settler’s ability to farm, which in turn preserved the integrity of the soil. Today, the prairie grasses can reach 10 feet tall if not managed.  The rich grasses are prime for feeding livestock. This music attempts to provide images of traveling through the Flint Hills today, while imagining changes over eons of time, due to weather and eventually, human interaction.  Generally, the upper voices provide the imagery and some history, while the lower voices describe a bedrock foundation.  Describing the rock foundation found in the Flint Hills is also a metaphor for human strife and struggle as man, among living flora and fauna, interact with the area. The vocal ranges and harmonies are accessible for young ensembles, whether in development or with years of experience.

I have studied the piano since 5 years old under Mr Joseph Toh and I graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts with a Diploma in Music in 2013, majoring in Music Composition under Malaysian composer Mr Chong Kee Yong and Singaporean composer Mrs Joyce Koh Bee TuanAbout The Destruction of a Twinkling StarThis piece is written for Violin and Piano.Ever wondered what happen to a star when it explodes? I decided to write a short fantasia about this phenomenon. I decided to use the very famous opening of the Mozart’s Ah vous dirai-je maman Variations for this piece. A very sweet sounding opening to a devastated effect. I have decided to use a pretty unconventional notation. I think a star is full of mystery, and you always get surprises when you improvise. In my music, I like to try new things! And of course, despite new things, I will always use back my own prestige extracts from some of my works. I have used an almost similar notation in my Sky 2 for piano solo, and the last movement of the Six Improvisatory Pieces for solo piano.The interval between the highest and the lowest pitch of the Mozart’s Variations is a Major 6th. To get the intended transcription into my work, I cut the keyboard into 6 different ranges. Because the range of the violin is not as big as the piano, I cut the violin into 3 different ranges. If want will to realize, Mozart uses all 6 notes of the opening C major scale, and hence, I transcribe it into chord clusters into my work. The Destruction of a Twinkling Star is dedicated to my friends Miss Lee Xin Yee and Mr Kelvin Koh.

German • English.In September 1942 Viktor Ullmann was interned in the concentration camp of Theresienstadt where he composed the opera Der Kaiser von Atlantis [The Emperor of Atlantis] on a libretto of Peter Kien, a fellow prisoner, in 1943. This opera was rehearsed by a chamber ensemble founded with the permission of the SS, but its first performance was prohibited after the final rehearsal. The autograph of the score only survived because shortly before his deportation to Auschwitz in 1944, Ullmann handed it, together with the libretto, to a friend who was able to save both manuscripts at the end of the war. The opera is a parable of a cruel emperor, whose senseless war is claiming many lives. Death puts an end to the chaos by refusing his duty - now, everyone lives for eternity. The king becomes disempowered, but the people long for a release from the pain of life. Only the voluntary death of the emperor can restore death's original purpose. The libretto is a vigorous take on the Third Reich and more particularly the concentration camp of Theresienstadt through the means of a mystery play. The music, with its numerous references to jazz and then current light music, sometimes by direct quotation, puts the composer in the role of political commentator, following the tradition of topical opera in the 1920's.

This piece is part of a series of tango-jazz compositions. Each one explores a particular quality of the tango. Number 2 expresses a mysterious mood and has a touch of blues. New Tango No. 2 is an unusual tango in several ways. Given that many of my tangos have shifting time, this one is entirely in 4/4. The A part is 12 bars. A distinctive feature of this section is the use of blues scales over triads. The B part is 8 bars. As a contrast, this section has a harmonic shift to minor 9th chords. The tune's 20-bar AB form is used for solos. To underscore a mysterious mood, the coda has a false ending (2nd bar of the coda) before starting up again (repeating bars 9-11 of the A section) and leading into the real ending. There are interpretive marks in every measure as each part independently adds to the stunning polyphonic weaving. Requires careful counting and close attention to rhythms, but sounds quite advanced and dramatic when all details are observed. A fun piece to show your technique and musicianship as a group in any concert. The festivities and ceremonies surfaced throughout the nation all year. This composition was crafted as one of those celebratory creations. “Legacy of Valor” was originally composed for brass quintet and rock band, with two vocalists singing a stirring account of legacy handed down from one generation to another. This double brass quintet instrumental rendition of “Legacy of Valor” is indeed a much more musically gratifying composition. It is the way it was supposed to be all along!Released in 2023 for the 76th birthday of the Air Force, this work and its message are appropriate for any patriotic event, including joint performances between any two brass quintets, civilian or military, American or global. Many stirring meanings can be communicated and celebrated through “Legacy of Valor”!
