This is a work ideal for both, professional performers as well as students of the year before College level (ie. 17 years old)In the past, I had the chance to experience how performing with a musician who is also your personal partner (wife, girlfriend, etc.) can ease the process of merging together, enhancing the performance as if it were by a single musician rather than two separate individuals. So, when I was asked to write a piece for a duo in such circumstances, like the Rose-Gibbs Duo, I saw it as a great opportunity to explore the possibilities of blending, fusing, and merging musical content, sound, and other parameters into a cohesive whole.Therefore, this work explores the concept of musical discourse produced by the interaction of both instruments, which often have to align their accents, timbre, or dynamics to become one entity; as if melting together, as if two solids became liquid and fused to form a new alloy. The form and structure of the work are also influenced by this constant idea of blending, integrating the various sections into a single, unified movement.Written in Barcelona on July 2023______________________________________Obra encargada por el Rose-Gibbs Duo (Benita Rose y Tony Gibbs) – Prescott (Arizona, EE. UU.). Ideal para tanto músicos profesionales así como tamién para alumnos del curso antes del nivel Universitario de Superior (17 años aproximadamente)En el pasado, tuve la oportunidad de experimentar cómo el hecho de tocar con un músico que también es tu pareja personal (esposa, novia, etc.) puede facilitar el proceso de fusionarse, mejorando la actuación como si fuera realizada por un solo músico en lugar de dos individuos. Así que, cuando me pidieron componer para un dúo en tales circunstancias, como el Rose-Gibbs Duo, lo vi como una gran oportunidad para explorar las posibilidades de mezclar, fusionar e integrar el contenido musical, el sonido y otros parámetros en un todo cohesivo.Por lo tanto, esta obra explora el concepto del discurso musical producido por la interacción de ambos instrumentos, que a menudo deben alinear sus acentos, timbre o dinámicas para convertirse en una sola entidad; como si se fundieran juntos, como si dos sólidos se convirtieran en líquido y se fusionaran para formar una nueva aleación. A solo piano work commissioned by Palau de la Música Catalana and funded by the Barcelona Creació Sonora to be premiered on the 28th September 2022 at Palau de la Música Catalana (Barcelona) by Alex Alguacil. Scenes is a musical composition comprising three distinct pieces: Loops, Resonances, and Phase. These works can be programmed independently or played consecutively without interruption to create a seamless, unified musical experience.Each of the three pieces draws its melodic inspiration and thematic ideas from Los Requiebros, the opening composition of Enrique Granados' Goyescas. In Los Requiebros, Granados skillfully incorporates a traditional Valencian tune known as La Tirana del TrÃpili to depict a romantic scene inspired by one of Francisco Goya's paintings. Goya's art served as a profound influence on Granados during this period.In Scenes, the aforementioned Valencian tune, along with various other elements rooted in the Spanish-Catalan piano school of Granados' era, is explored, dissected, reassembled, and blended with original ideas. This creative process results in three unique acoustic scenes where the central musical material is manipulated through looping, resonating, and phase shifting techniques. The resulting compositions provide a fresh perspective on the source material, offering a captivating journey through the world of sound, evoking a sense of timelessness and innovation.Scenes invites the audience to explore the rich heritage of Spanish-Catalan music while embracing contemporary approaches to composition and performance. The choice to perform the three pieces in succession without interruption allows for a seamless narrative that unites these scenes into a singular, immersive musical experience_________________________________________________________Una obra para solo encargo del Palau de la Música Catalana y financiada por el Barcelona Creació Sonora para su estreno el 28 de septiembre de 2022 en el Palau de la Música Catalana (Barcelona) a cargo de Alex Alguacil. “Scenes†(Escenas) es una composición que consta de tres obras distintas: Loops, Resonances y Phase. Estas pueden ser programadas de manera independiente o tocarse de manera consecutiva sin interrupciones para crear una experiencia musical unificada y fluida.Cada una de las tres piezas extrae su inspiración melódica y sus ideas temáticas de Los Requiebros, la obra de apertura de Goyescas de Enrique Granados. Work commissioned for mezzo-soprano Sandra Ferrández and pianist Irene Alfageme to be premiered at the Teatro de la Zarzuela (Madrid) on 1st April 2024.The piece takes inspiration from the the XV Century Spanish poem by anonymous author 'Van Y Vienen', which gave the lyrics of the work. Although the poem was written in the Middle Ages, it resonates with a timeless universality, allowing for a deep connection with the contemporary audience. Its metaphor of the sea as a reflection of human emotions – that come and go like the waves of the sea – transcends eras, resonating with the instability and hope that characterize the human experience.By using it as lyrics for a sort of contemporary habanera, I saw the possibility of merging the nostalgia of the past with the artistic expression of the present, creating a bridge between different historical moments through music and poetry. ____________________________________________________________________Obra encargo para el estreno a cargo de la mezzosoprano Sandra Ferrández y la pianista Irene Alfageme en el Teatro de la Zarzuela (Madrid) el 1 de abril de 2024. La pieza se utiliza el poema anónimo del siglo XV 'Van y Vienen'. Aunque fue escrito en la Edad Media, resuena con una universalidad atemporal, permitiendo una profunda conexión en la era actual. Su metáfora del mar como reflejo de las emociones humanas – que van y vienen como las olas del mar – trasciende épocas, resonando con la inestabilidad y la esperanza que caracterizan la experiencia humana. Al utilizarlo como letra para una especie de habanera contemporánea, vi la posibilidad de fusionar la nostalgia del pasado con la expresión artística del presente, creando un puente entre diferentes momentos históricos a través de la música y la poesía.

Written for the pupils of the chamber music course at the Conservatoire of Barcelona (Conservatori Municipal de Música de Barcelona). The work evokes the several steps experienced in the process of self-reflecting, where one looks inward and examines his own emotional responses and behaviours to a given input, idea, decision, thought, etc.The scoring challenges both performers to interact to each other and negotiate the musical material; sometimes by passing the main thematic ideas on to each other, other times by build it together and other times to influence and alter each other. All of it so both sound sources melt into one single musical discourse which evolves and transforms every so often, as if mimicking the multiple decisions and thoughts one can take during a self-reflecting process.The motivation behind the composition of this work lies in the need to offer a repertoire with the demands and challenges present in the repertoire used in exam boards and conservatories but with a modern use of harmony and melody such as the one we can hear on television or in the cinema. So the harmonic language, the form, the compositional techniques and the use of rhythm, melody and articulation in this work presents a blend a current style present in American film music, television, musicals, Jazz or minimalism (with influences from composers such as Ludovico Einaudi, Yann Tiersen, John Williams, Michael Nyman, or Hans Zimmer) with the type of writing, thematic treatment, piano technique and musical form found in the classical chamber music repertoire. Approximate duration: 3 mins.Written in Barcelona on April 2023.
