This composition is built in form as a traditional Mass, but the text used comprises of a selection of only a few words of those usually applied in the traditional Mass movements. The text used, described in detail, is as follows:1. As Kyrie movement: Only the word ELEISON (Have Mercy On Us) 2. As Gloria movement: Only the word GLORIA (Hail)3. As Credo movement: Alternative text: Paul’s 1:13 Corinthian (on love)4. As Sanctus / Benedictus: Only the sentence: PLENI SUNT COELI ET TERRA GLORIA TUA (The Sky and the Earth are full of Thy Glory)5. As Agnus Dei: Only the sentence DONA NOBIS PACEM (Give Us Peace)The text selection is a result of the intention to concentrate on the essence and the universal character of each movement, without getting into conflict with the dogmatic parts of the original text. This is also the reason for the use of the word alternative in the title. The writing is fairly melodious and tonal, with some contemporary effects.The individual movements may also be used seperately.Duration of the whole mass lasts for about 20 minutes.The individual movements vary from 2 and a half to 7 minutes. A Selection of Christmas Songs from PIAE CANTIONES for SATB choirPIAE CANTIONES is a Swedish-Finnish manuscript, the earliest collection of songs from Scandinavia (1580). In this selection of 14 Christmas-songs from this manuscript, the arrangements are presented as found in the original, with very few and simple additions, in an effort to preserve the authenticity of the period-sound. The order of the songs, the choice of number of verses, the voice-part distribution, the noted tempi and dynamics are my own suggestions - choices intent to hopefully be in accordance to what is known on musical practices during the Medieval and Renaissance periods in Scandinavia, and indeed all-over Northern Europe. The original manuscript contained only the vocal parts and may therefore be performed a cappella, or separately, but I dare suggest that all the songs will benefit greatly and work beautifully accompanied by an early music instrumental ensemble, (ex.: lute and fidle), or an organ, to double the voice parts and improvise bridges between the songs. As the title indicates, none of the musical material used in this composition is actual folk-music, but it is throughout its entirety inspired by it: The choice of Byzantine music modes, the irregular time signatures, the choice of instruments to be as closely related to those used in folk-music, the frequent use of ison (long-held note), heterophony, parallel thirds, simple ostinati and restrained harmony, as well as the permeating melancholic mood and the attempted intensity of expression, are all intended to be suggestive of Greek Folk-music. ON HUMAN RIGHTS (1), for SATB choir and piano, written for the UN Human Rights Office celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and as a response to Fondazione Adkins Chiti: Donne in Musica's call for compositions for their Global Call for New Music. The texts used are in English and comprise of six different international famous quotations on the subject of Human Rights, marked in the score. Included in this composition are also two important existing songs: The March of The Women by Ethel Smyth and Bread and Roses (USA, Anon.).
