Published by Mark Rimple (Nuova Corda Music) (A0.1491619). Partire 622 is a single movement work dedicated to the memory of my stepmother, Lynne N. Fein, whose father lived at this address on a street in South Philadelphia, she found mystical attachment to this number. When she died, I wrote this piece in her memory, and used these numbers in subtle ways to create the work. Melomanie performed and recorded the work on their CD Flourescence under its original title, Partita 622 [sic]. The harpsichord should be tuned as close to equal temperament as possible if playing with modern instruments, but a slight tinge of mean tone is highly acceptible. Melomanie performed with a viola da gamba but with otherwise modern instruments. Parts are included in the score.

Standing or Running is a duo for cello and lute that I composed for cellist Eve Miller in 2018, who premiered the piece with me on lute that year at the Wells School of Music, West Chester University.The cello part may be played on Baroque or modern cello, though it was designated for the former. The lute part was written for 10-course lute, but can also be performed on archlute, 8 course lute (with the 8th course lowered to C and minor alterations to the bass) or even a historical or modern keyboard instrument such as a harpsichord or even piano, though that might be a bit light in texture. The lute part may also work for Baroque triple harp. The lute frets may be set to equal temperament or possibly a very gentle 6th comma mean-tone variant such as Werkmeister.

A trio for alto saxophone, vibraphone and piano, Hermes in Retrograde was written for and premiered by Marshall Taylor, Christopher Hanning, and Sam Hsu. The soundworld is influenced by 50s Jazz and the metrical world of the piece comes from my interests in the music of the ars subtilior, which I was peforming quite a lot of at that time. The titles of the work are heavily influenced by my readings in Hermetic philosophy, especially the studies by Frances Yates. If anything, this work is a synchretic mashup of a cool jazz aesthetic that never was and a world of ideas that doesn't truly exist, creating a surreal landscape.Parts for the sax and vibes are included.

The first movement refers to Timotheus of Miletus, who championed new-fangled sound and added a 7th string to his Lyre, offending the musicians of ancient Greece.The second movement is based on a story of Don Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, who was said by a spy from Ferrara to spend many hours playing his lute and grimacing wildly for his circle of friends.The final movement is a reference to the music of the spheres, but rather than the Pythagorean consonances, prime numbers rule this artificial world.
