Piano Trio,String Ensemble Cello,Piano,Violin - Level 4 - SKU: A0.945465 Composed by Anonymous, C.M. Von Weber, Christian Petzold, J.P. Rameau, Johann Friedrich Burgmuller, Johann Sebastian Bach, Robert Schumann, Stephen Heller, Thomas Attwood, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Arranged by Kiyoshi Tamagawa. Baroque,Classical,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 57 pages. Mastery for Strings Press #5999949. Published by Mastery for Strings Press (A0.945465). Developed by Kiyoshi Tamagawa in chamber music workshops with younger pianists, Playing Together presents twelve standard works of keyboard literature for the intermediate to early advanced student combined with added violin and cello parts of moderate difficulty. The piano student who plays these arrangements with the aid of careful coaching will:1. Gain an introduction to the art of chamber music2. Learn basic ensemble and rehearsal skills3. Experience pieces he or she already knows in a new way4. Have fun making music with othersThe string parts occasionally extend beyond the first position; the violin to third position (in the Attwood Sonatina) and the cello to fourth (in the Musette, Attwood Sonatina, Bach G minor Minuet, Heller L’Avalanche, and both Petzold Minuets). String students who have not yet studied beyond first position may need to transpose occasional notes or passages an octave downward. More advanced players may of course elect to take even lower passages in alternate positions for musical reasons.

Instrumental Solo,Piano - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1079291 Composed by Friedrich Kuhlau. Arranged by Kiyoshi Tamagawa. Classical. Score and individual part. 24 pages. Mastery for Strings Press #683490. Published by Mastery for Strings Press (A0.1079291). The Concertino Classico (Little Classical Concerto) is a somewhat more advanced sequel to the earlier Concertino Barocco, also available from Mastery for Strings Press. This time two movements from familiar sonatinas by the German/Danish composer Friedrich Kuhlau (1786-1832) have been transformed into miniature concerto movements by adding and interpolating short tutti passages at appropriate points in the form. Not a note has been added or subtracted from the original keyboard solos, so that a student who has mastered the originals may play this Concertino simply by memorizing the exact points in the original pieces where additional music for the orchestra (second piano) has been added and they must wait to continue. A student may use any standard edition of either Sonatina to learn and perform these movements. I hope that studying and performing the movements of the Concertino Classico will give an advancing student an enjoyable taste of performing as a concerto soloist using familiar repertoire, as well as providing a bridge to the standard keyboard concerto repertory.

2 Pianos,4 Hands,Piano Duet - Level 4 - SKU: A0.945464 Composed by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Giovanni Battista Pescetti. Arranged by Kiyoshi Tamagawa. Baroque. Score. 12 pages. Mastery for Strings Press #5999147. Published by Mastery for Strings Press (A0.945464). The practice of adding an accompaniment to a composition originally created for a solo instrument is a time-honored tradition in Western art music, whether the additional music be for one or a few instruments or an entire ensemble. In the latter case a concerto movement can be fabricated from a solo work. The Concertino Barocco (Little Baroque Concerto) takes as its basis two pieces of the Baroque era that have long been popular repertoire for advancing students of the keyboard: the Solfeggio (or Solfeggietto) by C.P.E. Bach, and the third movement, Presto, from the Sonata in C minor by Giovanni Battista Pescetti. These works are transformed into two miniature concerto movements by adding and interpolating short tutti passages at various points in the form, rather in the style of Antonio Vivaldi. Not a note has been added or subtracted from the original keyboard solos, so that a student who has mastered the originals may play this Concertino simply by memorizing the exact points in the original pieces where additional music for the orchestra has been added and they must wait to continue.

Cello,Flute,Piano,Violin - Level 5 - SKU: A0.1302391 Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Arranged by Kiyoshi Tamagawa. Chamber,Classical. 114 pages. Mastery for Strings Press #892006. Published by Mastery for Strings Press (A0.1302391). The piano concertos of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart remain among the masterpieces in the medium. His early Vienna concertos were scored for full orchestra, but conceived as being performable by a keyboard soloist with string quartet or string orchestra alone. The flexibility of the scoring shows that Mozart was not averse to having them played by more intimate groups, transforming them into chamber music. A rather different aesthetic viewpoint motivated the composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s arrangements of seven of Mozart’s piano concertos, composed between about 1825 and 1836. The accompanying ensemble in these arrangements consists not of strings alone but flute, violin, and cello. The participation of the instruments is in fact optional, as the orchestral tuttis are incorporated into the piano part so that a single piano soloist can perform the entire work. The present transcription pays homage to Hummel’s elaborate and beautiful reworkings, well worth performing today, by using the same combination of instruments. The editorial viewpoint, however, is that of maximum fidelity to Mozart’s original text. The hope of the transcriber is twofold: 1) that keyboard performers, instrumentalists and audiences might enjoy this beautiful work in the absence of a full orchestra, and 2) that pianists might use this version to get Mozart’s original solo part in their fingers with a minimum of alteration, for such occasions when they are called upon to perform it.

Cello,Flute,Piano,Violin - Level 5 - SKU: A0.1343361 Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Arranged by Kiyoshi Tamagawa. Chamber,Classical. 101 pages. Mastery for Strings Press #928889. Published by Mastery for Strings Press (A0.1343361). The piano concertos of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart remain among the masterpieces in the medium. When the composer moved from his native Salzburg to Vienna in 1782, three piano concertos (K. 413, 414 and 415) were among his first compositions produced in the latter city. They were scored for full orchestra, but advertised when published as being performable by a keyboard soloist with string quartet or string orchestra alone. The flexibility of the scoring shows that, perhaps out of a desire for increased sales and more hearings of these works, Mozart was not averse to having them played by more intimate groups, transforming them into chamber music. A rather different aesthetic viewpoint motivated the composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s arrangements of seven of Mozart’s piano concertos, composed between about 1825 and 1836, though the last of them appeared in print only several years after Hummel’s death in 1837. The accompanying ensemble in these arrangements consists of flute, violin, and cello.  Hummel, who had studied with Mozart as a boy, materially altered and elaborated the solo part in these versions, taking advantage of the increased range of nineteenth-century pianos. He imposed his own tastes in ornamentation and decoration, which strongly influenced the piano writing of Chopin, on melodic passages. This is especially true in the slow movements, resulting in a stylistic hybrid that bridges the Classical and Romantic eras. The present transcription pays homage to Hummel’s elaborate and beautiful reworkings, well worth performing today, by using the same combination of instruments. The editorial viewpoint, however, is that of maximum fidelity to Mozart’s original text. The hope of the transcriber is twofold: 1) that keyboard performers, instrumentalists and audiences might enjoy this work in the absence of a full orchestra, and 2) that pianists might use this version to learn Mozart’s original solo part with a minimum of alteration for such occasions when they are called upon to perform it in its original setting.

Saxophone Ensemble,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Bass Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1402348 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Contest,Festival,Historic,Standards,Traditional. 149 pages. Jmsgu3 #985560. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1402348). Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 is significant for its composition and structure. It features nine solo strings divided into three groups of violins, violas, and cellos, showcasing a colorful instrumentation and demanding performance requirements. The concerto opens majestically with distinct groupings of soloists by instrument, maintaining these divisions throughout the movement with moments of independence for each soloist. The closing movement, a vigorous allegro, follows a similar pattern with the nine players divided by instrument. Additionally, the concerto includes a two-note adagio cadence where musicians were intended to improvise a link between the outer movements. This concerto is a prime example of the Baroque concerto style. It demonstrates Bach's mastery in creating intricate and harmonious compositions that challenge performers while showcasing the beauty of different instruments working together harmoniously. The historical context of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos is rooted in the Baroque era and Bach's circumstances. Composed around 1711-1720 and dedicated in 1721 to Christian Ludwig, the Margrave of Brandenburg, these concertos were a collection of six concerti grossi that showcased a balance between various groups of soloists and a small orchestra. Bach's decision to compile these concertos was influenced by his need for employment and his encounter with Christian Ludwig, who commissioned several works after being impressed by his performance in Berlin around 1719. Despite Bach's hopes for a position at the Brandenburg court, the Margrave did not pay for the work, possibly because the pieces were revisions of earlier compositions rather than new creations specifically for him. Moreover, the Brandenburg Concertos exemplify the concerto grosso genre popular during the Baroque era, featuring a more significant number of soloists than usual and expansive music that showcases a variety of instruments in different combinations. Bach's innovative use of instruments like trumpets, recorders, French horns, oboes, flutes, violino piccolo, violas da gamba, and harpsichord in these concertos highlights his creativity and mastery in composing intricate and diverse musical pieces. The historical significance lies in Bach's ability to blend different musical styles and forms while creating a set of concertos that music lovers cherish today.

Full Orchestra - Level 4 - SKU: A0.809714 Composed by Robert E. Proctor. 20th Century,Contemporary,Jazz. Score and parts. 128 pages. R. E. Proctor #2102129. Published by R. E. Proctor (A0.809714). A concerto for Double Bass and orchestra in the traditional fast - slow – fast concerto format. While not overly challenging for the bass soloist, it does explore, to a degree, the upper reaches of the instrument as well as sounding the beautiful low range. The first movement is that might be called Neo – Classical, opening with an 8-measure solo in a Largo or slow tempo. The tempo then changes to Allegro (fast) for the balance of the movement. The movement ends as it began with the double bass playing alone. The second movement is a jazz waltz. In 9/8, it opens with the soloist playing pizzicato against a rhythmic cord progression. The bass and cello sections pick this up to provide a ground upon which the balance of the movement is played over. The second movement is in the relative minor of Bb which is G minor. A haunting melody is introduced by the bass and doubled by the strings. This melody is replayed by various instruments as the Bass Soloist plays variations on this theme. The harp and the bass solo end the movement. The third movement leans toward French Impressionism. This movement is Andantino; however, it is a spirited. Written in cut time, where the half note equals 92 beats per minute. The melody is introduced by the woodwinds with the harp accompanying. The strings and brass join in as the woodwinds repeat the melody. Finally, the bass solo takes charge of the melody using it as a theme and variation. The harp is used extensively in this concerto providing harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic support for the bass. Written in 2015, the concerto is a new work, however, it is not experimental music. It uses the standard orchestral instruments playing in the standard fashion. It is replete with modern harmonic sounds and chord progressions. As concerto's go, this one is not overly difficult providing the bassist with a starting point as a soloist. It does require the soloist to have some mastery over the instrument as the music traverses most of the instrument’s range. Performance time is approximately 13 minutes and 10 seconds.

Published by Mastery for Strings Press (A0.945463). John Stepan Zamecnik (1872-1953) enjoyed a substantial career as a silent film music composer, culminating in his scoring the motion picture Wings in 1927, which won the first Academy Award for Best Picture. He was also an accomplished violinist. These twelve short pieces for violin and piano originally appeared in 1922 as Violin Compositions in the First Position, Vol. 1, published by the Sam Fox Publishing Company. Created for teaching purposes, they are much more than études or exercises-they are melodic miniatures that capture various moods, rhythms and styles with as much charm as Zamecnik’s best film music. They provide fresh and engaging concert repertoire for emerging string players, both as solos and string ensemble pieces. It is with these purposes in mind that the current edition including an optional second string part has been created. A Flamenco guitar solo in the Tarantas style. The Tarantas is a free-flowing slow moving Fandango from the region of Almeria which was earlier a principal mining region of Spain. The style is therefore sometimes called Mineras. Tarantas has long been one of my favorite Flamenco pieces for the guitar. It is notated in the key of B minor, based on a so-called ?Andalusian? cadence consisting of the chords B minor - A major (open B and E) - G major (open B and E) - F# major (with open G, B, and E). These dark and indefinite sounding chords allow plenty of room for the guitarist to open up emotionally with the audience. The material for the piece consists mostly of traditional themes that I have woven into a compositional whole along with a few of my own creations (falsetas). Songs for Tarantas are often expressions of loss of a loved-one in some mining tragedy. The long legato passages demand a complete mastery of the technique and should be played as fluidly as possible. The fanning (abanico) rasqueados in the finish of the piece can be new to guitarists coming to Flamenco from classical guitar. Demonstrations of this type of rasqueado can be found at my YouTube sites: https://youtu.be/sB-rDGtXK34 and https://youtu.be/OVBbUZFIj2s. Another type of rasqueado used frequently in the piece is a soft four finger rasqueado (cami) preceded by and followed by a brush up and down over the strings with the thumb (p-camip), accompanied by legatos on the base strings. The piece is accessible for advanced intermediate to advanced guitarists. As the Tarantas is played sens mesure, not demanding any competence of special flamenco rhythms, it is also a flamenco piece readily playable by classical guitarists. Classical guitarists should however be aware that the thumb plays the dominant role even in the more melodic passages.
