The composers included Claude Debussy, Gabriel Fauré, Reynaldo Hahn, and others. It inspired me to do my own Paul Verlaine song cycle. I purchased his Poémes saturniens on Amazon and saw that there are four collections of his poems. I immediately was drawn to the first one: Melancholia. There are eight poems in the set. 1. The final movement, Appels et invocations, is inspired by a strophe in Charles Baudelaire’s le Serpent qui Danse in Les Fleurs du Mal which speaks of preparing for a voyage, real orimagined, which is expressed here in the angular, robust theme in unison which opens the work.

It was there when I first first heard his Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, with soprano solo and eight cellos. The memory of that music will forever haunt me. I then recently discovered through a CD box set recorded by the Cuarteto Latinoamericano that Villa-Lobos wrote 17 string quartets. I guess he wanted to beat the number of string quartets that Beethoven wrote which is 16. So this being my 17th string quartet I wanted to pay homage to Villa-Lobos and dedicate this work to him, in memoriam. I took his first string quartet as a model, in terms of the titles he gave to the movements of that work. I. Cantilena … Andante II. Brincadeira … Allegretto scherzando III. The Nocturne is an expedition into almost forgotten memories with overtones of hope as well as resignation and melancholia. It has been described as the feeling one has on a cold winters’ day when the sun almost shines for a brief moment, then is gone forever into the frozen darkness of night, never to return. Originally written with orchestral accompaniment as the second movement of the Piano Concerto #2 in C minor, this arrangement for solo piano was made at the request of Joanna Ezrin, pianist and pedagogue, and has been recognized at the MTAC annual convention in 2007.

Published by Peter Pohorence (A0.1184658). This piece is for 4 pitched percussion instruments. Â The current arrangement is for a single timpani, a tuned tom-tom, a vibraphone, and a xylophone. Â Any 4 instruments may be used in a performance. Â The model for the piece is ecstatic ritual drumming, and the pitches are chosen from the ratios of hammer weights described in Boetheus's tale of how Pythagorus stumbled upon the ratios of concord. Â The beat patterns are based upon numbers taken from a 4x4 magic square as shown in Durer's Melancholia. Â The original title for the piece was Pythagorean Hammers in a Magic Square, but that's a little pretentious, so I changed the title to something better. Â The trick to the piece is to approximate loudness from different percussion instruments so that they blend well. Â The pitches are the pythagorean ratios of concord in the key of F, which is why a C clef was chosen for the score and parts.

Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q42249). In a film portrait of dancer, painter and sculptor Antje Tesche-Mentzen, I learned that in former times she was a proficient pianist. When she told me that she intended to begin playing again, I promised to compose her a cycle for her new beginning: 34 miniatures, some of them with a direct connection to her paintings and sculptures. The main part of Kosmos was composed in 2014, 400 years after Albrecht Dürer created his copperplate engraving ‘Melencolia I’, in which a magic square appears. In a magicsquare, numbers are arranged in a grid so that their sum in each column, row, and the two diagonals is the same number. In the square I have chosen, the magic number is 34.
