As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have mostly elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. (*See below for more comment on the texts in this set.) There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set are Children of the Heavenly Father, Day by Day, Thy Holy Wings, and Beautiful Savior. This collection of arrangements is also available for SATB voices and piano or piano solo.*A note on the texts in this set: Having grown up in a Swedish Lutheran church, the grandson of Swedish/Norwegian immigrants, and currently being choir director of another Swedish Lutheran church, these hymns have a special place for me. This medley of hymns was originally arranged for my church choir with the first verse of each in Swedish. Being under copyright, permission was obtained to use the more familiar English translations of the first three songs for local use. For this edition, I have opted to create my own texts for the first and third hymns while the second hymn is a translation in public domain. I have also provided a verse in English in lieu of the Swedish for those Nordically challenged. The fourth hymn is not a Swedish melody but for obvious reasons is a mainstay of the Lutheran hymnal. Like the other hymns, the first verse is in Swedish while the other traditional verses are also public domain.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.IMS175). 9 x 12 in inches.When I first started thinking about In Malaysia (sometime inApril 2015), I immediately heard a bassoon melody playing inmy mind that grew into a larger piece of music that painted my memories from my home country, Malaysia. This piece isconstructed of three movements that each tells a different story of its own. Opening expresses the mixed emotions offlying home and seeing the surrounding clouds from the airplane window. Panorama is a stark contrast to the firstmovement where the music is in a concise form, depicting the layout and landscape of the ground as seen from the plane(e.g. palm tree plantation). Grandpa's House, the concluding movement of this work, was written in memory of my lategrandfather. Each motive represents various childhood memories at the traditional village house, such as playing the 5-stone game known as Batu Seremban with my cousins, cycling in the backyard, and jumping rope made out of rubber bands.Duration: 12 minutes

Back then there was a small shop on Buncrana’s high street that sold everything from milk to DIY tools. And the name of the shop was “John Thinn And Sonâ€. I thought this was an awesome name and I remember the shop owner, the real Mr. Thinn, being a lovely kindly, rather shy and gentle man. And this inspired my childhood mind’s character of Mr.Thinn the magic-toy maker.  The 2nd theme arrived in September 2011 as soon as I had decided that Mr.Thinn’s first tune had waited long enough and now needed to find a permanent home. Once again writing for the wonderful Banda di musica has given me a unique chance to release an old and very special melody that has lain neglected and home-less for over 3 decades. The resulting piece is light hearted, fun and in a simple ABA form.There are 2 arrangements;No. 1 – School Arrangement ; Violins 1, 2 and 3, Cellos 1 and 2No. 2 – Standard Arrangement ; Violins 1 and 2, Viola, Cello and Double BassThere are a few violin and cello solos throughout which are to be played by the section leaders. These are of moderate difficulty.

Movement I: “Family Vacations.†Fond memories of childhood vacations as well as leading out on road trips as a father, are reflected by the excitement of this movement. Feel free to reminisce on your own family trips as you listen to or perform this movement. Movement II: “Jovial Banter.†I was going to call this movement “Roughhousing,†but that is only part of what this playful piece conjures. Besides wrestling my five boys (with my one girl amusedly watching off to the side), friendly joking with friends about rival universities, and playing harmless pranks on friends and family, all seem to be rolled up into this truly jovial movement. It has its own tricks and surprises to one who has never heard it before. Movement III: “Holiday Foods.†This waltz displays more elegance and structure than most of the other movements. It primarily elicits memories of the distinctive Thrower Christmas feasts, for which we created a unique tradition. Our yuletide banquets hail from a different country every year. Through the decades, we have discovered and adopted many international favorites that we continue to enjoy! Note the middle section of the waltz gets a bit spicy… Movement IV: “Pets.†Though as an adult I have not had the pleasure of enjoying personal pets, my youngest son developed an affinity for YouTube videos about funny cats and dogs. Nevertheless, my favorite childhood pet was “Blackie,†the splendid satin feline featured on the cover of this work. Pets are often quirky and extremely fun, as is this music. If it doesn’t put a smile on the listener’s face, someone in the line of musical communication may have failed. Movement V: “Sharing God’s Wonders.†Slow and wondrous, the music in this movement yearns to be shared. The theme, though only somewhat related to the other variations, strays to its own content after the first motivic notes. The melody is borrowed from a 2010 band composition of mine titled “Tribute to Joel Robison,†an ancestor, and a Texas hero. One passion I have enjoyed through the years is family history, truly a God-given legacy from which I draw much inspiration. Movement VI: “Personal Triumphs.†Indeed a subject to celebrate, triumphs of self-mastery, conquests over difficult tasks, and achievements of monumental goals all prompt me to break out in triumphant fanfares!

As an adult I occasionally try to remember and or capture child-like experiences-maybe not so much the actual event, but the emotive atmosphere left from impressions long ago embedded in the psyche.Each movement of this work is based on spontaneous and uncalculated musical imagery of dreams and childhood reflections. I have deliberately avoided the professional composer’s bag of developmental tricks and worked for a more free flow of simple melodic ideas: they go wherever they want.Movement IInspired by the feelings I had growing up on Merritt Island Florida with my older sister Barbara. This music was a gift to her on the occasion of her 2004 marriage in Flemington New Jersey. It was originally scored for a brass quartet with which I performed. I have written three other brass quintets, and when I started thinking about this one (my fourth) this seemed like a logical choice for a first movement.Movement IIBased on a tune that came to me in a dream. It is dedicated to my wife Lois (we also married in 2004) and has a formal title of Wake Up To A Melody. I originally scored it for jazz band-more specifically for the excellent Salt Lake Alternative Jazz Orchestra, and it has recently been recorded by that group. I like the simplicity of this melody, and felt it would make a natural second movement for this brass quintet.Movement IIIThe third and most difficult movement is Tangoragrondo. It is literally a rondo with a turn-of-the century (19th-20th) ragtime melody/gallop occupying the A theme followed by a Tango (inspired by trips to Santiago Chile) for the B theme. The return to the rag (A theme) is then followed by a fantasy development (C area) with a return to to the rag (A theme) followed by a coda that recalls material from the first movement. The form is quite simple- ABACA-Coda.The material was originally developed as a movement for my double concerto Letting Midnight Out On Bail written for the Duehlmeier-Gritton piano duo and orchestra. It was recorded by the Warsaw Philharmonic and has been released on CD. A second version for two pianos has also been recorded and released by the Duehlmeier-Gritton piano duo. This orchestration for brass quintet will be the final resting place for this chaotic rondo.

This romantic waltz is the third in my series of impromptus inspired by sounds of childhood, namely the theme music from early nineties game systems like Nintendo. This short piece (app. 1 min. 20 sec.) is reminiscent of the occasional love themes from various games. Often the music was in stark contrast from the more rambunctious and syncopated main themes. Performers should approach this piece the same way they would a Chopin waltz: careful voicing of all parts but especially the primary melody, regular use of rubato, and a sensitive touch. The middle section has the left-hand playing the melody solo voce while the right-hand plays repetitive chords. Be sure to keep the right-hand accompaniment softer than the left in this section. This is the sixth installment in my series of piano impromptus inspired by the sounds of childhood, namely the theme songs of early nineties video game systems like Nintendo. This quick piece (1 min. 10 sec.) is a fun, aggressive composition that sounds harder to play than it really is. The opening right-hand melody is easily played by fingering each four-note group with either 1,2,5 or 1,2,4. I originally discovered this pattern from an Art Tatum transcription book. This ninth impromptu (2 min. 45 sec.) in the series of pieces inspired by sounds of childhood, namely early 90s video game music, is a workout for the left hand. The right hand plays a continuous ostinato high above the rest of the arrangement. Care must be taken with the ostinato so that it emphasizes the dotted quarter note pulse and not the quarter note pulse. This can be difficult because of the note grouping of two instead of three eight-notes.The left-hand has the herculian task of juggling both the chordal accompaniment and primary melody. At all times the melody found in the middle stave must sound out above all other parts. I'm not sure where the inspiration for this composition came from. There was no specific game or memory that brought forth the muse. This short piece (1 min, 50 sec) for piano is the fifth in my series of impromptus inspired by the sounds of childhood, namely the theme music from early nineties video game systems like Nintendo. The exotic sounds found throughout this arrangement would be described by many as sounding Spanish, Flamenco, or Egyptian. Impressions of these musical traditions are often characterized by the augmented second melodic interval and the use of modal rather than tonal organization. In the minds of many composers, these musical locales once represented the edge of western civilization or the known world. As such, they serve as creative jumping-off-points to imagine new worlds.The introduction section must be played with a far greater sense of rubato than the playback recording. At the new tempo, interpretation is more straight-forward. One technical and fingering challenge lies in the melodic figures in the right-hand that are frequently harmonized in parallel thirds. The bass ostinato pattern must be played steadily, but the dynamics should still be subservient to the primary melody in the right-hand. Follow my work at www.bendockery.com.
