Parts of a world lost forever but treasured in the adult soul.From First Day, First Page of the diary and Sunday’s Joybells to the Bittersweet morning dances and the Calm of a Sunny Afternoon, from A Sudden Absence and a Strange Question to the Loneliness and Dream, from the imaginary Indian Dance to the Walkin’ on a Rainy Day and from March of the Goose to the Flowers’ Waltz, Lullaby and Farewell Song, these Diary of a Child pages unfold the thread of a very well known memory, a memory of us all.These 30 short piano pieces were composed between 2003 and 2007. Some of them are compositions of inspired children, composer’s pupils, like Orsaki Roussetou and Plato Tsoukatos-Pontikis.This collection is dedicated to all composer’s pupils and especially toy Nikos Karidis, the grown up child who gave me the opportunity to write most of the pieces presented. The work was recorded by Dimitra Mane on cd for the upcoming edition.. The artist performed parts of the work in composer's personal Portrait organized by Greek Composers Union at Hellenic Conservatory in Maroussi in 2010 and the whole collection at Mikros Horos Tehnis (Little Hall of Arts) in Glyfada, Attiki, in 2015. Jeux pour Deux for two pianos (2007)A work of neoclassical character with influences from jazz idiom. It is dedicated to the piano duo Dimitra Mane – Andy Miliory and to Maurice Ravel in the musical style of whom there are intentional references - by which was performed at Athenaeum Concert Hall Athens in 2008. The work have been secondly performed by Ting Ke and Chenshayang Huang at Boston University Concert Hall under Spring 14 Piano Ensemble Juries (K. Lullaby for Ryan was written between 2020-2022 in memory of my friend Ryan Cooke who was killed in 2016 after a tragic accident. I wrote the piece after I felt his presence when I was having the last seizure in a cluster of seizures that left me with a permanent disability. Composing this piece had been my was of processing the pain I had been carrying for all those years following his tragic death, and this is my way of grieving, processing, accepting, and ultimately sharing my memories of him and to remember him since that fateful day in 2016.

These four piano pieces were compiled as a set and dedicated to the memory of David Del Tredici. The idea for Four a Mentor was sparked by the recent death of the composer, David Del Tredici with whom Burwasser studied while working toward completing his Ph.D. in composition at the CUNY Graduate School. When hearing of his passing, Burwasser immediately searched for some old pieces he had written under Del Tredici's tutelage during the late 1980s. He unearthed two pieces which were composed with him, “Mini Waltzâ€, when Burwasser was tasked to write a piece in the style of Chopin, and a short, jazzy arrangement of the 19th-century Christian hymn and Christmas carol, “O Come, O Come, Emmanuelâ€. The other two works while not directly associated with Del Tredici, were composed during the same era. “Lullaby†was written in honor of the birth of a friend’s niece. The “Preludeâ€, originally named “Title Sequenceâ€, was based on a film project the composer was working on that never came to fruition (like “Three Shades of Lennyâ€). All four pieces have been minimally revised. .

Rest IRON BALCONIES AND LILIES was written between December 1991 and November 1992. The nine poems of the cycle, originally in Yiddish and by various poets, speak of a woman's life at various stages, from extreme old age to youth, and back to old age. The poetry is magnificent and direct: at turns quiet, passionate, gentle, ferocious, erotic, agonized and violent. In setting these poems, I have particularly sought to capture the many images and metaphors that unite them. For example, the music representing the violent, life-giving blades (scythes) of No. 2 evoke agonized, ritualized grief in No. 3, a ghastly (and comic) celebration of death in No. 5, and ultimately, a wondrous and benign angel of death in No. 9. Over the course of the cycle, the power and singular clarity of childhood memory gives way to the quiet complexity and blurred edge of adult memory. All poems used by permission.

Based on this song, Barbara Heller composed the duo 'Lalai, Schlaflied zum Wachwerden?' for violin (violoncello) and piano in 1989 - in memory of 50 Iranian women who were murdered under the regime of Khomeini. Lalai is now published in an orchestral version for the first time. Tina Ternes has sensitively orchestrated the charmingly simple folk tune and the desperate cries for help from Lalai with a great sense of detail. The vigorous, angry solos of the violin were instrumented for strings, woodwinds and brass and turned into powerful sound blocks which take turns with melancholy, freely floating passages. The soft melody of the piano part is played by the woodwinds, accompanied by minimalist pizzicato figures of the strings. First performance March, 2023 by Schola Cantorum of Silicon Valley.One morning in early 2022, after having somewhat unexpectedly lost my two aunts and one of my best friends in the world over the previous year or so, I woke up and this piece, along with some tears, poured out in about 15 minutes. For Us the Living contains echoes of Brahms' German Requiem (Denn alles Fleisch ist wie Gras), Shawn Kirchner's Cornerstone, and Dolly Parton's Light of a Clear Blue Morning (another a song about loss). The words are partly based on a short poem I wrote after my father passed away. I ended to him, Go to sleep, rest a while. So, perhaps obviously, the piece is like a lullaby. What I'm saying is that the purpose of mourning is first to comfort the survivors, and a call to take care of each other -- but also to not just wait for salvation, but to use the memory of our loved ones, to be inspired to pick ourselves up and make ourselves useful while we're on this Earth.Â

I always enjoy writing something simple but pretty and this piece is exactly that. As with many of my other piano compositions, I enjoy writing them in the style of “soft piano” pieces which you can listen to while you study, work, relax, or anything else. I initially came up with the original motif at the start of the piece which I really liked and expanded it into a full piece. When coming up to the B section I made it too dramatic and it would probably be too distracting for the listener if they were working or studying so I decided to start over with the B section and write something that expanded upon the original motif in a subtle and sweet way.I am quite pleased with the finished composition, it turned out in a way that I was aiming for from the beginning. As for the title, I sat down after I had finished writing the piece and listened to it a few times and brainstormed some names. I eventually settled on the name that it is now: ‘Some Things Don’t Always Last’ which has a bitter-sweet quality to it. I think it fits quite well with the piece as it’s like a lullaby that comes and goes. A distant memory that is recalled because of an old toy you found or because you drove past your childhood home that you grew up in.
