In the second century AD, Artemidoro de Daldis (135-200), a very cultured man who had traveled a lot, contemporary of Emperor Marco Aurelio, wrote in Ephesus his work Symbolism of Dreams (Oneirocritica). In it he tried to create a systematic theory for the interpretation of dreams, based on experience. Artemidoro claimed that he had written his work in five volumes by express order of the god Apollo, who had appeared several times in his dreams. In his fascinating book he distinguishes five kinds of dreams: Dream, Vision, Oracle, Appearance and Fantasy. Artemidoro’s book, Op. 63, is a work for guitar in five movements, which take their titles as the kinds of dreams mentioned above: Dream, Vision, Oracle, Appearance and Fantasy. It is an extensive composition, 19 minutes long, and with a great variety of compositional and instrumental techniques: the performer, who is asked for a lot of versatility and imagination, has to play glissandi, harmonics, pizzicati, bells, loops, metric modulations, ordinary and muted strokes, microtones, distortions, various kinds of bumps in the box, etc. The five movements share a special scordature and the same melodic, harmonic and rhythmic material, which is transformed according to the dreamlike atmosphere of the piece, but always maintaining each of the structural elements a recognizable identity. The multiple presences of these essential identities throughout the work articulate the complex form of the Book. I finished the composition of The Book of Artemidoro on April 24, 2006. The work is dedicated to guitarist José Guerola, who premiered it at the Vivanco Palace in Catarroja (Spain), on May 5, 2006.

The metre of the piece is driven by the text setting as it would have been in chant, so the resulting metric modulations feel natural rather than abrupt and unexpected. The final prelude of this set of 24 uses the modern concept of metric modulation as its foundation. A single B min/maj 7 arpeggiates repeatedly in the treble, while a D aug/maj 7 does the same in the bass. The effect is not unlike that of modern minimalism, or perhaps the movie soundtrack from Vertigo, or The Day the Earth Stood Still, by Bernard Herrmann. The right hand remains unaltered throughout, BUT, the left hand reframes the groupings of the eighth-notes from groups of 6, to 5,4,3,2, down to a one-to-one ratio. It then ramps back up, past the start point, and ends with groups of nine notes, all the while maintaining the right hand. It may seem as if the tempo changes, or the time signature changes, but in fact, it is only the groupings of the left-hand eighth-notes that changes, hence, modulating the meter! Other contributing items to the title Thriving Three are that it has three movements and the collaborating percussion part uses three instruments, including drum set, vibraphone and Djembe drum. Movement 1, marked Assertively, q = 100 is a moderately fast movement with highly syncopated rhythms of eighth and 16th notes in quadruple meter and supported mostly by the drum set. Movement 2, which is approached by metric modulation with no pause from movement 1 is marked Slowly and Sweetly, q = 66. It features mostly vibraphone. Movement 3 is marked Spirited, dotted quarter note = 100. Written in 6/8 time, it is a fast and dance-like movement with highly syncopated dance-like rhythms and primarily supported by Djembe drum and drum set.

As performed by Tredegar Town Band at Brass In Concert 2014 in their 3rd place winning program, With A Little Help From My Friends is a transcription/arrangement of the ProBrass version. This arrangement helped Dewi Griffiths secure the Best Principal Cornet prize and requires a soloist that can either improvise, or capable of playing Thomas Gansch style blues licks as in the original solo, which is also included with the parts. This arrangement begins with a piccolo trumpet duo (also playable on Soprano and Bb Cornet) in a baroque style, then building to a massive 6/8 power ballad entrance, followed by a bluesy solo trumpet feature. More building to a big section requiring the soloist to unleash their inner rock god follows, then back down to a sedate blues where a solo trombonist joins in the antics. The ending is a tricky metric modulation, where the 6/8 turns into a rock 4/4 and brings in the big guns (the bass section) with some hard hitting lines. Feel free to allow your drummer to ad lib. as much of this piece as you dare! Beautifully laid out in A4 size, the score and parts are easy to read and available NOW for digital download.
