This piece, which, in the company of Islamey, Gaspard, the Etudes-Tableaux of Rachmaninoff and various Liszt pieces, is at the pinnacle of both interpretive and technical challenges, is now brought into MUCH clearer focus with our new edition. Since the piece is practically a sacred text, no notes have been changed. Period. What HAS been changed is the presentation, especially in the 2nd movement, which is also our audio sample here. The small note-values, the radical time signatures, the measures that often take up an ENTIRE line of commercially-printed music, and the decided lack of cautionary accidentals: all these elements have been pre-decoded, essentially. No more using a hand-lens to see if that mark is a slur or a tie, or both! No more straining to see what note is held over, while the new one strikes. Our setting here, which you can see in the sample, often takes each BEAT, and puts a barline there, along with a common time signature, 3/4, 6/8, 4/4, etc. No smaller fractions, and no vast forest of dots and flags. All the 2nd movement rhythms have been arithmetically expanded, while maintaining their relationships. All the ornamentation, with its hidden melody, has been written out.So, while this piece has not been made any easier to play, it HAS been made vastly easier to read. One might claim that it is now readable at all, whilst the original cannot be deciphered at sight without great mental and visual effort. Please, print this double-sided for best results, as the repeats are either on a single page, or are on facing pages in our formatting. Single-sided gives you that same control, if you wish. Some chords respelled, some notes assigned to the opposite hand. Pedaling is assumed rather than written durationally. In this arrangement, you will hear acoustic guitar and violin, often heard in tango ensembles in the early 20th century. This bossa nova is inspired by Eduardo Arolasâ??s never-published tango, Volcán (Volcano). At least itâ??s never been published according to the todotango.com web site. Eduardo Arolas is a famous tango composer who is well documented on that web site. Also on that web site, you can listen to Osvaldo Requenaâ??s piano performance of Volcán from Arolasâ??s original piano sheets (written circa 1917). Years ago, I developed and wrote a tango quintet arrangement of Volcán by listening carefully to Requenaâ??s recorded piano performance on the web site. My quintet arrangement, in turn, was my source for writing this bossa nova arrangement. So, now Volcán has finally been published, but as a bossa nova! Wherever Señor Arolas may be, I hope he understands. In this bossa nova arrangement, I believe I've preserved the spirit of Arolas's original tango.Without knowing exactly what was in Eduardo Arolas's mind when he wrote the original tango, this is my personal idea of the message behind the music:Introduction: Let me tell you a story about a volcano that happened long ago.Part A (bars 5-20): It's a sad tale about human helplessness and suffering in the face of natural catastrophe.Part B (bars 21-36): The people living in a town below a volcanic peak were going about business, leisure, and play, experiencing the ordinary cares and pleasures of life.Part C (bars 41-52): One day, without warning, the volcano erupted, with smoke, falling hot rocks and ash, and hot lava flows. Some folks got away, but others were killed, buried or injured, and all that was left of the town was devastation, suffering, and, eventually, calm.Part A' (bars 53-end): A sad tale, but may we learn from it, and may the souls of the poor victims rest in peace.If you listen to and read the lyrics of Arolas's great tango, La Cachila, or listen to another superb tango of his, El Marne, you will witness further his talent and skill in composing dramatic music. Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1125807). The travels of the three wise men as they followed a star to see the newborn King was the inspiration for this arrangement. It starts with the right hand representing the twinkling of the stars in the vastness of the heavens, while the left hand provides the feeling of winds blowing across the desert sands as the magi set out on their journey. Soon the melody is heard in the right hand, though in a more stately rhythm than the traditional, more pastoral original. The left hand continues its sweeping motion unabated and drives the piece ever onward as the wise men draw ever nearer to their destination. The minor mood of the song is replaced in the chorus as the star of wonder shines down upon them, filling their souls with hope. Eventually they arrive at the stable and offer their gifts to the babe lying in a manger: gold, frankincense and myrrh. It is the last of these gifts which foreshadow the death of Christ and his burial in the stone-cold tomb. After they have spent some time praising their new-found king, the three wise men return to their homeland as the music follows them back across the desert sands to their homes in the East.

The influence of Erik Satie can be heard in this prelude as it brings to mind his famous “Gymnopedie.†The unusual meter of 7/8 gives the music a feeling of the vastness of time and space as it almost never seems to end, but continuously spins out from measure to measure. Judicious use of the pedal is necessary to maintain the crystal clarity of the music while still allowing the harmonies to transport the listener to a realm of unending serenity and calm.

There is a powerful sense of loss in the music as the melody rises and falls amidst the rich chords of harmony…the distant memory of what was once a vibrant wood teeming with with life. Now all that is left is ash and smoldering ember. As the piece comes to a close, one can hear the mournful cry of a bird in the right hand as the smoke rises from the barren landscape.
