The production for Cello and Guitar is, in general, quite scarce, and while one could be repelled from this instrumentation because of the potential sound balance issues, the actual result is, in truth, remarkable and surprising at the same time.During the 1810s, Dotzauer wrote three opuses involving the guitar, making us assume there could have been a player to serve as source for his inspiration. This Pot-pourri, Op. 21, composed around 1811 and marked for publication by Breitkopf & Härtel only in 1817, is a 9-minutes-long piece in five parts in the key of E minor. A dramatic, long introduction leads the way to a Gavotte-like Andante, whose melody is constantly varied and developed to put the singing qualities of the soloist in the spotlight. A dreaming Larghetto, in G major, prepares us for the coming back of the Andante, and for the closing, rushing Presto. This edition comes in a full score and cello part that closely follow Dotzauer’s instructions, plus several bonuses: A guitar part with annotations by Emanuele Buono, 1st-prize winner of the “Michele Pittaluga” competition in 2013Two additional cello parts, one with historical performance suggestions by Australian cellist Josephine Vains, and one with modern performance suggestions by Michele Galvagno.

Among all opera composers, Gaetano Donizetti (1797–1848) was perhaps the most prolific when it comes to chamber music. He composed sixteen string quartets, countless pages for piano (solo and four-hands), and several fantasia-style pieces for solo instrument and piano. The autograph of the Largo for cello and piano survived to this day thanks to virtuoso cellist Alfredo Piatti (1822—1901), in whose collection it safely rested until it could be unearthed once more. When you think of Gaetano Donizetti (1797–1848), possibly the first opera that comes to mind is L’Elisir d’amore. And what is the first aria that comes to mind? Most probably the one for the tenor Nemorino at the beginning of the Second Act that begins with the words “Una furtiva lagrima…” (A stealthy tear…).What you possibly didn’t know is that this very melody was secretly penned by Donizetti in a sketch for piano solo that he treasured hidden in his wallet—folding lines can still be seen on the autograph manuscript in Bergamo. The production involving the voice by Carlo Alfredo Piatti (1822—1901) is as vast as it is neglected. From about sixty songs for voice and piano, to almost twenty adding a cello, to several (though small) choral works. This edition kickstarts the unearthing of these unfairly forgotten gems, with the Canto Piatti wrote using the Exercise n° 7 from Duport’s Essai. This most famous etude, which every cellist will know by heart, provides the base over which the text by poet and librettist Felice Romani is shaped into a dramatic musical line.Also included is a rich preface with a thorough analysis of how Piatti interwove text and music together. The original text of Romani’s poem is included as well. The full score is accompanied by a cello part and a solo vocal part, as it was customary at the time.

Pietro Mascagni’s (1863—1945) Intermezzo Sinfonico from his opera Cavalleria Rusticana needs no presentation. The idea of this edition comes from an update to an arrangement created for a friend’s wedding in 2010. While arranging, I stumbled upon the composer’s autograph of this Intermezzo, for piano solo, and decided to add a modern engraving of it to the mix. Finally, an orchestral score and a full set of parts have been included to close the circle.There are, therefore, three versions of this piece: ASE 0055: for piano solo, based on the composer’s autograph from 1888. ASE 0057: arrangement for cello ensemble (min. 8 cellos), based on the piano part and not on the orchestral version, which differs greatly in dynamics and agogic marking ASE 0058: original orchestration, score and parts This edition’s piano solo and original orchestration versions inaugurate a new series dedicated to Italian composers and/or to composers who thought about Italy while writing their music. This year's Christmas publication choice fell on a song very dear to me: Hark! The herald angels sing. The text, inspired by Luke’s Gospel (2:14), appears for the first time in a collection of Christmas carols called Hymns and Sacred Poems in 1739, jointly written by Charles Wesley (1707-1788 ) and George Whitefield (1714-1770), two of the founding members of the Methodist movement.The version we know today is the one adapted by William H. Cummings (1831-1915) from the section Vaterland, in deinen Gauen of the Festgesang zum Gutenbergfest, WoO 9, by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847). The story, however, is more complex and articulated than that.The original version of the text, written by Wesley, bearing the title Hymn for Christmas-Day, had received only slow and solemn music for its verses, music now almost completely discarded. Also, his original opening lines were Hark! How all the welkin rings / Glory to the King of Kings .The version that has been passed to us is the result of alterations made by different hands, especially those of Whitefield, who changed the initial couplet into the one we know today.In 1840-one hundred years after the publication of Hymns and sacred Poems-Mendelssohn composed a cantata commemorating Johann Gutenberg’s invention of movable-type printing. The English musician William H. Cummings finally adapted Mendelssohn’s music around 1855 in order to fit the music to the verses and give it its present look.In this edition we propose the version that every listener expects to hear when reading the title on the programme and, immediately after, one of the few original versions that have reached us in their entirety, that is the one set to music by Samuel Arnold (1740-1802) and available today in The British Minstrel, and Musical and Literary Miscellany, vol. 3, published in 1843.The proposed instrumentations are those of the classical string quartet and the cello quartet. Both variants are very simple to perform and are certainly suitable for small string ensembles formed in musical schools. In the cello quartet version, the only relatively complex part is that of the first cello, which should be left to the teacher or to a student able to play up to the 7th position without excessive troubles.I hope this music can bring you the serenity that made me prepare it.

Eternal Father, Strong to Save is a British hymn traditionally associated with seafarers, and was first written in 1860 by William Whiting (1825—1878), an Anglican churchman from Winchester. According to his recount, Whiting grew up near the ocean and, at the age of thirty-five, had felt his life spared by God when a violent storm nearly claimed the ship he was travelling on. This instilled in him a belief in God's command over the rage and calm of the sea. The music associated with it was written by John B. Dykes (1823—1876), another Anglican clergymen and composer of the music for nearly three hundred hymns. This edition comes in several arrangements for multiple ensembles. At the moment of the first edition it contains the original choir version (with the 1861 lyrics), a voice and piano version, and arrangements for string, cello, trombone, horn, woodwind, brass, and saxophone quartets. The cello, trombone, and horn quartet versions are slightly more elaborated. Additional versions will be created upon request, contact me to know more. This arrangement is dedicated to Martin Smith.

The Elegy on the death of Anton Rubinstein, for two cellos, written by Carlo Alfredo Piatti (1822—1901) is a poignant expression of the pain the composer must have felt at the news of his friend’s death, in the first days of November, 1894. The piece begins with an almost sentence-like cadence, in C minor, with the first cello sounding the church’s bells, and the second cello answering with chest-tearing cries of pain. The true elegy start on a Dactyl rhythm and develops into four increasingly tense episodes before seeing the return of the opening melody. But not all is bleak: a shift to C major brings us into the heavens now enriched by the music and pure soul of our friend, and while the end is once more in C minor, we know inside us that he will always be with us. This publication is the second one celebrating the 200th anniversary of Piatti’s birth, and comes in a single file containing both parts and score.
