Set class 3-5[016] with ICV = [100011] is used, where prime_0 = C B F-sharp, and I_0 are interchanged with P_0 to create movement within the 5/2 polyrhythm. This piece is for solo piano. A 5/2 polyrhythm is used to start the piece, then switches to a quasi-homophonic rhythm, these homophonic valuses move together in a similar rhythm to create chord relationships. Alberti bass is used throughout the pieces as a way to create unique arpeggio runs. The ending is a bit dramatic, with a pinch of fourth species counterpoint.

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533545). This was the first piece composed for the saxophone by ANDERSEN VIANA. The piece uses two contrasting sections: one related to violence and psychological instability in the big cities, and other; related to the nostalgic moods found in Rio de Janeiro in the past. It was composed specially for a friend, saxophonist and Doctor Mecenas MAGNO. Monologue for a friend is a rhapsodic and brilliant piece of great effect, also using rhythms and reminiscences of the music called Choros and Samba so popular in the Rio de Janeiro city at the 40’ths and 50'ths. It uses also free structures and little allusions to minimalism of Riley and Reich. The work is divided in six sections: Tormentà to, Scherzando, Lento, Lentissimo, reexposition (Tormentà to) and Coda. Born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, he has a Ph.D. in Music Composition from the Federal University of Bahia. He began composing at the age of thirteen and became a professor at the age of nineteen. He has studied in courses and seminars about music and film in several official institutions with Ennio Morricone, Ettore Scolla, Giussepe Tornatore, E. Polizzi, Radamés Gnatalli, Max Rostal, Oilliam Lanna, S. Vianna (Accademia Chigiana di Siena, Reale Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, Arts Academy of Rome, Royal University College of Music Stockholm, UFMG, UFBA), among others. He currently works as a composer-conductor and cultural producer, as well as a professor at the Clóvis Salgado Foundation, Palácio das Artes, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in addition to offering lectures and workshops in various institutions both in Brazil and abroad. His first teacher wa his father, Sebastião Vianna (assistant and reviser for the Brazilian composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos), and most recently furthered his studies in other institutions in Brazil, Italy, and Sweden. He has also published over forty articles both in Brazil and Europe. Viana has received 25 awards in Argentina, Brazil, Europe and the USA, including the Prix de Composition at the First Composition Competition Festin Choral 2013 in the city of Billère (France), first prize at the Susanville Symphony Composition Competition 2012 (USA), first prize in the international composition contest of Lys Music Orchestra 2001 in Belgium, first prize and the audience prize in the Lambersart 2006 International Contest of Composition in France. To date, he has composed 315 musical pieces for voices, chamber, symphonic as well as electronic instruments. The title of this piece is the spacial configuration of the DNA molecule. The physical representation of the molecule, in this work, is from that of the outside observer. The DNA molecule, as we know, is represented as a curved ladder. The rungs of the ladder contain all the vital information necessary for us to be individuals. The rungs are held in place by vertical structures much like that of the standard ladder. This ladder is often depicted as swiveling and, as such, the rungs of the ladder are quite visible at times and disappear at other times. The outsider observer will see those rungs for a period of time and, as the ladder swivels, the rungs disappear and all that is visible, to the observer, are the vertical structures. The physical representation of the swiveling DNA molecule is represented musically with the quartet moving back and forth between a monophonic and polyphonic. There are also variations in tempo which relate to the movement between the monophonic and polyphonic states (a speeding up during the approach to viewing only the vertical braces). The philosophical perspective relates to the fact that this molecule is common to all of humanity at the same time that it separates each and every one of us. It is ironic that something that keeps all of us separate, at the same time unifies us. There is no doubt that we are all unified, yet intrinsically different. Being cut from the same (high grade) cloth, we are all the same, and yet, we may have different colors and patterns. The piece ends with an oscillation between two pitches ultimately resolving to one pitch.

This medley of Western Armenian music in 10/8 is drawn from the Anatolian song-dance tradition and perpetuated in America. In Sirahar Yem (“I'm In Love”), the Left Hand reinforces the stressed beats within the rhythmic pattern, emphasizing beats 1, 4, and 6. Beats are grouped as 3 2 2 3. Initially, this may be a challenge to play but well worth the effort to expand one’s musicianship skills! While harmony is sparingly interspersed in the inner parts, or created in intervals of 3rds and 6ths, traditionally, the ceremonial/wedding melodies Candle Dance and Hars Oo Pesa (“Bride and Groom”) are monophonic. Due to the mountainous terrain in historic Armenia and challenge of travel between villages, these two dances exist with different melodies, depending on the region. The dance steps also vary by village. In contrast, the use of a sustained note (drone) in the bass clef alters the spirit in Hars Oo Pesa where the key also changes to D major. Whereas the piano has limitations in replicating microtones of folk wind instruments such as the zurna used in an authentic Armenian village wedding, the aim in this arrangement is rather to preserve the spirit of the melody and actively engage the amateur pianist.For more information on Armenian music, refer to : Kazarian, Hachig. Originally for guitar, it was quite an interesting task figuring out how best to outline the chord structures for a monophonic brass instrument. The arrangement includes a slower, more simple introduction, development sections, chorus sections, and sort of an outtro. The piece is a lovely cross between expressive and technical classical feel and a dancing/driving popular music format complete with verses, choruses and bridges.Often, in the places where the original guitar plays two or more notes in chordal fashion, the euphonium will either play grace notes or an altered rhythm to accommodate the chord structure. The grace notes are always slurred, their length designated by the note values used. Many of the passages are fully articulated rather than slurred, so care will need to be taken to play in the correct style for the arrangement to be performed well. Technical passages, especially those with syncopation, must dance. It is highly recommended to listen to an original guitar recording to get this feel!Additionally, the euphonium will need to breathe, so there are also breathing 'suggestions' in the arrangement. The text of the Cantigas is written in the medieval Galician-Portuguese language. The poems were collected during the reign of Alfonso X of Castile El Sabio (1221–1284) and are characterized by the fact that every one of them mentions the Virgin Mary (with over 300 being about miracles) and that every tenth poem in the collection is an actual hymn. Alfonso sent scribes throughout the region to collect these poems and thus it is not only one of the largest collections of monophonic songs from the Middle Ages it is also one of the first mass collections of living culture in history. The arrangement slowly builds throughout the piece culminating in 3-part harmony before being scaled back to a monophonic vocal line again. Remembering that this is a folk song, the text should be sung in a simple, innocent style. While writing this piece, we often thought about picturing the countryside of youth. The text deals with one of the most personal things in one's life and that is the subject of life after death. We really hope you enjoy performing this piece as much as we did writing it.
