SIX PIECES OF JOY AND MELANCHOLY is a collection of short pieces with a more melodic and in some cases rhythmic character. The pieces were composed individually for different occasions, but they work together somehow and offer the performer and the audience a roller-coaster sensation through the constant change of mood. Danceuphoria is the opening piece, an uneven, powerful dance which immediately creates an uplifting mood. Melodic Sorrow is a piece dedicated to the memory of my father, Konstantinos Nousis. It's one of the first pieces I wrote for guitar as a teenager. Here you can read an evolved version of that first piece which keeps the simplicity of the primary inspiration.Lifeness is an ode to life piece full of rich colors, melodies and harmonies. Meditation, originally written as the theme music for a Reiki Yoga YouTube channel, is a very slow and meditative piece with short melodic legato lines. Hope evokes warmer feelings. A simplistic piece based on natural harmonies that calms and soothes us.Finally, Cascading Waltz was chosen as the final piece, because it can be freely interpreted by any performer and gives the opportunity for diverse crescendos and accelerandos.The pieces can complement the repertoire of young students as well as professional guitarists who seek a modern yet melodic approach to the guitar.SIX PIECES OF JOY AND MELANCHOLY est une collection de courtes pièces au caractère plus mélodique et, dans certains cas, rythmique. This piece is originally composed by Gabriel Fauré for Flute and piano , and it is arranged for Flute and String OrchestraThis elegant solo has some beautiful melodic lines and is Impressionistic in form and harmony. An excellent teaching piece to emphasize phrasing and musicality, or a great programming choice when a lovely lyrical moment is needed!This famous work is dedicated to Paul Taffanel, often called the father of the modern French school of the flute. He was a busy man, active at the Opéra de Paris, in the Conservatoire concerts, as the leader of the Orchestre de la Société des Instruments à Vent, and, from 1893, as a professor at the Conservatoire. Fauré was appointed professor of composition there in 1896, and it was almost inevitable that Taffanel should ask him, in the spring of 1898, to write a sight-reading piece (the Morceau de lecture) and a concours composition for the July examinations. Fauré decided to pass the orchestration of his incidental music for Maeterlinck's play Pelléas et Mélisande, on which he had been feverishly working, to his pupil Charles Koechlin, so he could get to grips with the concours piece. The Fantaisie for flute and piano occupied him from the beginning of June until at least mid-July.The piece opens with an E-minor sicilienne of great charm, but soon gets to a C-major Allegro filled with lightning-fast pyrotechnics. Writing to Koechlin, Fauré complained:I am drowned in the Taffanel and plunged up to my neck in scales, arpeggios, and staccati! I have already perpetrated 104 bars of this irksome torture The first performance of the Fantaisie was given by the concours winner, Gaston Blanquart, on July 28, 1898.

J'aime les formes musicales concises telles que le Prélude et la Fugue, où il y a une idée claire et directe, suivie d'une autre plus complexe et développée.Conformément à cette idée, cette œuvre se compose de deux pièces distinctes, la première - Transfigured Life - vise à attirer l'auditeur avec son rythme rapide et dansant et sa partie de violon simple et mélodique. Il se «transfigure» via quelques courts intermèdes au piano solo en seulement deux notes alternées pour terminer - qui sont le cœur de l'idée originale, maintenant clarifiée en effaçant tout le reste.Le deuxième morceau - Still Life - conserve son sentiment de quiétude grâce à une ligne de piano simple qui laisse beaucoup d'espace à la partie contrastée (mais encore une fois simple) du violon. En tant que pièce absolue et non programmatique, le titre fait référence uniquement à la couleur et au rythme atmosphériques ; c'est à l'auditeur de voir la « nature morte » de son choix dans son esprit.Une note sur les performances :Malgré ma référence à des lignes « simples » et l'évitement déterminé par l'œuvre des grincements modernistes traditionnels, l'œuvre présente certains défis d'exécution en termes de phrasé et d'ensemble qui nécessitent des compétences et une musicalité considérables. In keeping with that idea, this work consists of two distinct pieces, the first - Transfigured Life - aims to draw in the listener with its quick, dancing rhythm and simple, melodic violin part. It 'transfigures' via a few short solo piano interludes into just two alternating notes to end - which are the core of the original idea, now made clear by clearing everything else out of the way.The second piece - Still Life - retains its sense of stillness through an uncomplicated piano line that gives lots of space for the violin's contrasting (but again simple) part. As an absolute, not programmatic, piece the title refers to the atmospheric colour and pacing only; it's up to the listener to see 'Still life' of their choosing in their own mind.A note on performance: Despite my reference to 'simple' lines, and the work's determined avoidance of mainstream modernist squeak - the work has certain performance challenges of phrasing and ensemble that requires considerable skill and musicianship. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6880). Key: B minor.Apart from the famous Rococo Variations, Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky composed another work for solo violoncello: Pezzo capriccioso, Opus 62. It is dedicated to Brandoukoff (Brandukov) with whom he had performed this little virtuoso piece for the first time at the famous salon of the Benardaky family in February 1888. The soloist himself suggested a few minor changes in the solo part. Even Maurice Gendron, the great cello virtuoso and teacher, attended to the work once again, not only 'bedighting' the solo part in a virtuoso manner but also adding a cadenza, an extended recapitulation and a lengthened ending to the Pezzo. The present edition enables the performer to get an accurate picture of the different versions and layers. The fingerings, bowing indications and interpretational aids - except for in the added parts - are by Maurice Gendron.

In 1983, my friend and colleague Arnt Martin made me read and listen to a most interesting piece of music for soprano, viola d'amore and strings, this work called my attention to the viola d'amore. In the following year, I became more and more absorbed in the possibilities this instrument offers and in 1985 decided to write a morceau d'ensemble including a viola d'amore. Thus birth was given to Mysterion, a composition for which these five musicians seem tailormade. As to content, Mysterion represents a reflection on death. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802564). Sergei Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C-sharp minor, Op. 3, No. 2, is one of the composer's most famous compositions. Part of a set of five piano pieces entitled Morceaux de fantaisie, it is a 62-bar prelude in ternary (ABA) form. It is also known as The Bells of Moscow since the introduction seems to reproduce the Kremlin's most solemn carillon chimes.Its first performance was by the composer on 26 September 1892, at a festival called the Moscow Electrical Exhibition. After this première, a review of the concert singled out the Prelude, noting that it had aroused enthusiasm. From this point on, its popularity grew.This work was one of the first the 19‑year‑old Rachmaninoff composed as a Free Artist, after he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory on 29 May 1892. He performed this new work for the first time at one of the concerts of the Moscow Electrical Exhibition on 26 September 1892. It was printed the following year as the second of five Morceaux de fantaisie (Op. 3), all dedicated to Anton Arensky, his harmony teacher at the Conservatory. Because at the time Russia was not party to the 1886 Berne Convention, Russian publishers did not pay royalties, so the only financial return he ever received for this piece was a 40 ruble (about two months' wage of a factory worker) publishing fee.The prelude has been arranged for orchestra in several versions. This is a reworked setting of a movement from his stage work ‘Dmitry the Pretender and Vasily Shuysky’, the ‘Introduction and Mazurka from the dramatic historical chronicle by Aleksandr N. Ostrovsky’ (dating from 1866/67), which the composer transcribed for piano in June 1867. John W. Slatter, who arranged other pieces for Schott publishers, set this pretty Mazurka for violin and piano – a graceful little dance movement suitable for playing as an encore or for music-making at home.
