The title of this 14-minute piece reflects the fact that it was commissioned by my dear late friend Edwin Good to perform on his beautiful Thomas and Barbara Wolf copy of the very first piano. (Cristofori, 1700). It is playable on the modern piano as well. The movements are as follows: 1. In Medias Res: Fanfare (begins at 0:00 in the mp3 file) is a showy, energetic, brief, humorous beginning.2. Ricercar (begins at 0:33 in the mp3 file) uses the imitative techniques of 16th century instrumental music, with modern harmonies.3. For JSB (begins at 3:25 in the mp3 file) was composed in loving homage to Johann Sebastian Bach.4. Burlesca (begins at 6:15 in the mp3 file) is another moment of humor and energy.5. Nocturne (begins at 8:04 in the mp3 file) is, of course, night music.6. Passacaglia (begins at 11:04 in the mp3 file) continues without break from the Nocturne. In the left hand, a pattern of several notes repeats many times, organizing the music. Simultaneously, the right hand quotes fragments from the other movements.NOTE: The mp3 file is automated, but gives a rough sense of the music.

From the Composer:I committed last year (2022) to review my musical works that have been in digital storage, complete them as necessary, and release them for the world to hear. I finally finished my first work on this list, one that's been on my hard drive in one version or another since 1999 (that's 24 whole years!).Las Follias de España (which despite its name, originally came from Portugal) is a chord progression usually in either D minor or G minor in the form of i-V-i-VII-III-VII-i-V. Composers for the last 500 years have used this chord progression to come up with some fantastic theme and variations, ranging from unaccompanied works, trio sonatas, to even full orchestral implementations. You can spend a looooong time listening to all the beautiful compositions that composers have made over the centuries highlighting this very captivating set of chords.I humbly submit my own version of La Folia in D minor for String Trio and Cembalo (harpsichord). I wrote my first version of this in my senior year of High School as a challenge to myself to write music in a genre I loved. I made updates here and there over the years, but its sat on a hard drive the entire time. It's taken me months to essentially rework it to my satisfaction and has been submitted for copyright. I have uploaded it to YouTube to share with others.BIG SHOUT OUTS to the three composers that inspired me in this work:Corelli: - His version of La Folia is probably the most popular for violinists, especially those that play out of the Suzuki books. I included a modified version of his Folia (Variation 9) in my work (with all other parts being vastly different from his interpretation) as an homage to his work.J.S. Bach - He showed me that music can be as intelligent as it is beautiful. I have two variations inspired by his work. Variation 8 is one that I wrote this year (2023) which I wanted to write for a long time is a variation that showcases the Harpsichord. Bach's keyboard works and unaccompanied violin works inspired me here. Second, Variation 14 I feel has Bach's inspiration all over it. The violin parts are each playing separate distinct melodies in double counterpoint which trade parts on the repeat. The bass line follows a pattern that Bach has employed for the bass on a number of Violin concertos and lastly, the Harpsichord treble part is a mensuration canon based on one of the violin parts, with the keyboard part playing the melody 4x as fast with variations. Lastly on a play of numbers, number 14 was a very special number for Bach, and as a tribute, I've made this the 14th variation in my work. This was also a new variation I added this year (2023) as well.Vivaldi - My first musical love. I feel that I captured a little bit of his musical DNA in all my works and this piece showcases this. Vivaldi's works is what made me fall in love with Baroque music and I am indebted to him for the profound impact his works have had on my life.So here you go. 413 measures. My longest individual work to date. And because I love playing with numbers, I decided to release this to the world on my 41st Year, 3rd month. Enjoy!- Jose Bravo.

Each of the three movements is inspired by some of my favorite painters, in this case Yves Klein, Zao Wou-ki and Jackson Pollock for the first, second and third movements respectively. I first saw Yves Klein work on a visit to Balbao, Spain during an exhibit of his art at the Guggenheim Museum. There was a kind of giant sandbox filled with his famous blue pigment. The lighting created timbral shadows which varied depending on where the viewer stood. It was difficult to leave. I first saw Zao Wou-ki's paintings during an exhibit in Paris around 2000 – I don't remember where. The abstract shape and colors fascinated me and each work seemed to explore a different emotional perspective. And they were simply beautiful. In 1967 I began my music studies in New York and within a few months of arriving went to the Museum of Modern Art at W. 53rd street. On the way there I crossed paths with Moondog on the street near the museum dressed in his Viking outfit. From my first visit, the two artists I remember most vividly were Jackson Pollock and Alexander Calder. Jackson Pollock's art washed over my senses and I stared at One: Number 31 1950 for what seemed to be hours. And Calder's mobiles danced in slow motion and also captivated me. Someday I will write a work to pay homage to him. Three Painters depicts what I see in the works of these artists as sound over time. The first movement (Yves Klein) explores the subtle changing orchestrational timbres on the pitch 'F'. The second movement (Zao Wou-ki) uses the instruments without their reeds and/or mouthpieces resulting in waves of air sounds washing over the senses. The Third movement (Jackson Pollock) is a jazz-like romp which transfers his vibrant visual energy to a full blown big band style played by the ensemble. The duration is 12 minutes.

Hass (A0.1031280). This is my first original composition with PDF sheet music upload. The piece is a beginner's level variation on my theme, Changing Seasons, which I composed originally in October of 2008. Eventually this piece will be published for a large ensemble but for now, I am sticking with humble beginings. This version of the song is meant to serve as an etude for piano. The song is a fun study of arpeggiation, intriguing chordal movement including secondary dominants, repeats with 1st and 2nd endings, classic piano technique, dexterity, and a small homage to Pachelbel's Canon (although not in D, in this case.) This etude is written in the key of C Major for ease of learning's sake. The original composition was written in the key of D Major. I used PreSonus' Notion 6 for this project. However, I ran into a plethora of difficulties when I transferred the file over to PDF format. Some text was lost as well as the majority of all my performance and technique notes in the score. I will try to correct this ASAP and get the score reloaded. I really just need to get something posted on here because I AM a composer and I have never actually shared a composition in musical score form for others to purchase, play or peruse. This is my first ever. I hope whoever selects this piece enjoys it and might offer some constructive criticism or insight. Have fun! (Note, the piece is intended to be played at approximately 120 bpm but I encourage playing it slowly several times at first to figure out a way through the printing errors for now).

That opportunity came in 2015 when I was completing my DMA. There was an opportunity to write a short piece for my final DMA recital, which is where it was premiered by a community trumpet choir. The piece begins with a chorale alluding to shifting colors in space. The piece then shifts into an energetic homage to a few of my favorite trumpet choir pieces that I came across in my research.

To write Tiento para un pensador, I found inspiration in an experience that I had many years ago, when I was a student in Dusseldorf, Germany. I was spending time one night with my friend Rafael Aguirre, a virtuoso classical guitarist, as he was casually playing through some of his repertoire. He asked me if I thought that it was possible to play a Baroque fugue - one of the most complex of musical genres - on the guitar. Before I had time to think about the question, he started playing his own arrangement of a fugue by J.S. Bach, talking me through it as the fugue theme appeared in different registers and the counterpoint got more and more intricate.The effectiveness and beauty of the contrapuntal sounds I experienced that night stayed with me. So in 2020, when I was invited to attend the Twisted Spruce Symposium and had a chance to compose my first piece for the guitar, I quickly decided that I would take up the challenge of writing my own fugue for the instrument. Looking to find a more specific context for the new work, I discovered the early Spanish genre of the tiento, essentially an early Hispanic form of the fugue. I came up with a melody which, I sensed, featured elements of that early style combined with a touch of Andean melancholy. As I composed, I strived to follow this basic affect throughout, letting the lines evolve organically as the piece seemed to engage in a long, continued search for its cultural and temporal identity.Para un pensador means for a thinker in Spanish. It is my homage to the intellectual guitarist, to the reflective and discerning performer of intricate contrapuntal music.I would like to extend special thanks to Nathan Fischer for producing this valuable edition of Tiento para un pensador.

Half of the music in this collection are revised and expanded versions of a few of my very first compositions. The other half of this album are pieces I composed in honor of these musical roots. Reflections of Home is, in many ways, a literal title. It is impossible for me to compose, play, or hear this music without thinking of my youth, my childhood house, or my family’s piano. In fact, the music itself feels like a compositional home. These works are the origins of everything I create today, and no matter how far from these beginnings myself or my artistic interests travel, this music will always be my home.

Sonatina for Oboe and Piano was written in 2016. It consists of three movements, each being a letter of personal homage. The first movement titled Spring Festival is a tribute to Beijing, my birthplace. The music opens with a fanfare passage by oboe that is immediately echoed by piano. The brief dialogue quickly leads to the first main theme of the movement: an up-tempo, rhythmically vibrant melody reminiscent of a Chinese folk dance. The second theme in a slower tempo, is clumsy, somewhat crude yet with abundant charm and humor. The first theme reappears before the movement ends on the uplifting fanfare, much similar to how it all started. The second movement titled Ballade is a letter to my beloved wife, whose elegance and passion inspired me to write this lyrical, through composed piece as a manifest of love. The third movement titled Child’s Play is dedicated to one of my closest childhood friends, himself a terrific oboist. The movement is loosely in an A-B-A form. The two outer sections feature a playful melody in neo-classical style and are separated by a casual and whimsical middle section.

It was there when I first first heard his Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, with soprano solo and eight cellos. The memory of that music will forever haunt me. I then recently discovered through a CD box set recorded by the Cuarteto Latinoamericano that Villa-Lobos wrote 17 string quartets. I guess he wanted to beat the number of string quartets that Beethoven wrote which is 16. So this being my 17th string quartet I wanted to pay homage to Villa-Lobos and dedicate this work to him, in memoriam. Sonata in the style of Scarlatti is an homage to the composer Domenico Scarlatti and is modeled after one of his many piano sonatas, Sonata in E, K. 403. When I first started learning Scarlatti’s piano sonata, I found myself missing notes in the arpeggios in the first phrase, leading to contemporary harmony that I found interesting. I later decided to write my own version of the sonata from my own contemporary perspective. This sonata follows the binary format common with most Scarlatti sonatas, but does not repeat the second half. It also features a contemporary view of harmony and several key changes while keeping trills and melodic figuration similar to Scarlatti’s.

From my in-progress collection of intermediate and late-intermediate piano compositions in Impressionist styles, this is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in pieces including the Sonatine, Le tombeau de Couperin, and others.It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: sometimes-awkward hand and arm crossings, extended tertian chords (9th/11th/13th voicings), whole tone sonorities, and some modal writing, to name a few, while still maintaining a clarity of voicing that students will find in Ravel's own music. All of these can be disorienting to students encountering Ravel's music for the first time, so students will benefit from Ravel-preparatory repertoire, like this piece, that introduces these techniques.Since most currently published collections of Impressionist-style pedagogical repertoire focus on Claude Debussy's language, this piece is a welcome addition to the student piano literature and will help bridge the gaps between standard teaching repertoire and pieces like Ravel's Sonatine, while also exposing students to a new, rich, and inviting tonal language that will inspire them to seek out more of Ravel's compositions.On a more personal level, this piece was also inspired by my main non-music hobby: raising and releasing butterflies. An upcoming relocation will allow me to build my own butterfly garden in my new home, and I can't wait to create my own butterfly-friendly outdoor paradise filled with native plants and wildflowers. I hope my garden will have as many butterflies flitting through it as are depicted in the 32nd-note passages in this piece!

Scarlet Letters was composed in 1984 on commission of the pianist and harpsichordist Franzpeter Goebels (1920–1988) on the occasion of the 300th birth day of Domenico Scarlatti. The original working title â€Lettere scarlattine†is a concealed homage to the Italian composer. The compositional material is limited to the tones D, E, C, Es (= S, spoken â€Es“ = E flat in German notation) and A, derived from the musical letters of Domenico Scarlatti’s name, and the tones B (= B flat in German nota tion) and H (= B natural), the initials of my name. With 7 tones and 7 parts, this music is a sort of story about my imaginary encounter with the composer Domenico Scarlatti who was then one of my favourite composers. Sometimes I also used compositional means which I discovered in the sonatas of Scarlatti, such as quick 6/8 figures, afterbeat octaves and repetitions of short motifs. I tried to translate the clarity, brightness and cheerfulness, the astounding modulations and the pianistic brilliance of his music into my compositional language. In multiple different contexts, the hymn compares the beauty of Christmas to that of a lovely rose. The most common harmonization to this melody was composted by Michael Praetorius in 1609, and the original part-writing contains elements of the Renaissance madrigal. Although this band arrangement is rescored with different part-writing, it pays some homage to the musical traditions employed in the original carol. This theme and variations is a mixture of four different scoring methods: modern Christmas Carol; gently-applied lyrical contemporary; Renaissance imitation; and a bombastic, Romantic orchestral finish. This piece features multiple subtle musical sensibilities and a gentle introduction into the world of mixed meter. I sincerely hope you enjoy this arrangement!

In multiple different contexts, the hymn compares the beauty of Christmas to that of a lovely rose. The most common harmonization to this melody was composted by Michael Praetorius in 1609, and the original part-writing contains elements of the Renaissance madrigal. Although this band arrangement is rescored with different part-writing, it pays some homage to the musical traditions employed in the original carol. This theme and variations is a mixture of four different scoring methods: modern Christmas Carol; gently-applied lyrical contemporary; Renaissance imitation; and a bombastic, Romantic orchestral finish. This piece features multiple subtle musical sensibilities and a gentle introduction into the world of mixed meter. I sincerely hope you enjoy this arrangement!

In my years as Assistant Conductor and Pianist for the National Choir in El Salvador, I enjoyed working and performing works like this one. I wrote this piece with tho main ideas in mind: first, to create with easy harmonies that could appeal to anybody and second to be able to create a work that can be performed in concert halls. From my in-progress collection of intermediate and late-intermediate piano compositions in Impressionist styles, this is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in his minuets (like the middle movement of the Sonatine and the minuet from Le tombeau de Couperin). It means The Sunken Garden, and I'll explain why below.It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: sometimes-awkward hand and arm crossings, extended tertian chords (9th/11th/13th voicings), large rolled chords, and some modal writing, to name a few, while still maintaining a clarity of voicing that students will find in Ravel's own music. All of these can be disorienting to students encountering Ravel's music for the first time, so students will benefit from Ravel-preparatory repertoire, like this piece, that introduces these techniques.Since most currently published collections of Impressionist-style pedagogical repertoire focus on Claude Debussy's language, this piece is a welcome addition to the student piano literature and will help bridge the gaps between standard teaching repertoire and pieces like Ravel's Sonatine, while also exposing students to a new, rich, and inviting tonal language that will inspire them to seek out more of Ravel's compositions.On a more personal level, this piece was inspired by the Sunken Garden, a former landmark on the Indiana University campus that sat across the street from the practice building in which I taught dozens of piano students, coached numerous singers, and learned piles of repertoire before moving away last year. The Jordan Hall greenhouse now sits on the former Sunken Garden site.Because the Wells Quad dorms are right next door, I hear this piece as a recollection of a social dance night that the dorms probably held frequently back when the Sunken Garden existed. Wells Quad served as a classroom/academic office complex for years after Jordan Hall was built in the 50s, but they are now back-converting the buildings into dorms again. (As of this writing, two of the buildings now serve as dorms, while the other two are still academic buildings. While I was pursuing my doctoral minor in composition, the composition professors' studios were almost all in Wells Quad's Sycamore Hall. They upgraded to the East Studio Building as soon as they could, though!).
