When he asked me to compose Steve’s Mythical Forest he described it as …a walk to a forest where one finds a guitar and then picks it up and plays a tune... So, in this mythical forest I found the sounds at the same spots where the guitar maker transforms simple elements to a ‘magical wand’. And that is only a beginning… The work describes, in very simple tonal language, a small stroll in a forest at the end of the day and at the beginning of the night where sounds melting together in loving feelings and passionate desires for life. This is a set of three miniature intermediate trumpet duets focusing on developing specific skills on the trumpet. It could be used for a recital, in trumpet lessons or just as a practice tool with a friend. The three sisters are mythological creatures, with snakes for hair and gazes that turns one into stone. The overall character of these three miniature duets is nasty. This can help a young trumpeter practice accessing different emotions in their playing. Euryale is a study in trills. This sister, who was the second oldest, was vicious, with brass hands and fangs. She is especially noted for her bellowing cries, which is emulated in the obnoxious trills in the opening. Medusa was a beautiful maiden. Turning men to stone was defense mechanism for her, as the mythological story details she suffered at the hands of Poseidon. Of the three sisters, I thought Medusa was somewhat misunderstood. Her movement as a result is a little tamer, but still has a sense of unease. The movement is constructed as a round, which can help develop skills in timing and form. The final sister, Stheno, utilizes some more complex rhythmic figures. Stheno was arguably the most ferocious of the three sisters, having turned more men to stone than both of her sisters combined. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q24049). Karol Szymanowski (1882–1932) is regarded as one of the most important Polish composers since Chopin. He received his formative musical training in Warsaw where he lived for many years and was also director of the Conservatoire and Music Academy. His compositional oeuvre comprises a large variety of styles: Szymanowski first leaned towards Chopin and Scriabin, then studied Richard Strauss and Igor Stravinsky, finally finding a style in which he combined impressionist and expressionist, partly even atonal moments. His 'Mythes' for violin and piano from 1915 fell in a transitional period: in the period of turning away from late German Romanticism. They are expressive miniatures full of tonal refinement and impressionist charm and, thanks to their accessible virtuosity, perfect effective performance pieces.

Four pieces for solo piano on mythological themes. The four pieces are: Voyage to Cythera, Circe’s Palace, Sirens, and Erinyes, the Mist Walker. I. Voyage to Cythera (ΚÏθηÏα) describes a sea voyage to the home of Aphrodite. The music captures some of the intense ambivalence of Baudelaire’s poem of the same title, alternating between feelings of expectation and dread. II. Circe’s Palace describes Odysseus’ crew coming upon the enchantress Circe (ΚίÏκη) in her stone palace, sitting at her loom. She invites them to a feast, where she drugs them and transforms them into swine. III. Sirens (ΣειÏῆνας) also paints a scene from the Odyssey. The Sirens were sea nymphs who would entice sailors to their deaths through their seductive singing. When Odysseus and his men draw near to the Sirens, he orders them to stuff their ears with beeswax so that they cannot hear clearly. Odysseus has himself bound to the mast of his ship, so that he can hear the song without risking his life. IV. The Erinyes (ΕÏινυες) were an early Greek form of the Roman Furies. They were chthonic deities, born from the blood shed by Uranus when he was castrated by Cronus. Their role was to punish men and women who had broken natural law, usually by driving their victims mad. The piece opens with the victim wandering about in mist, after which he is set upon and torn to pieces in a frenzy.
