In 1986, the Tennessee Dance Theater commissioned the Suite to be performed at Nashville’s Summer Lights Festival. A few years later Edgar Meyer provided the beautiful string orchestra arrangement that is contained in this score. The individual tunes are in various folk styles appearing in a chronological order O’Connor says, not only represents the evolution of American folk music, but also mirrors his own family’s migration from Ireland and Holland to America. It traces the family’s route through the thirteen colonies initially, and then eventually West during WWI nearly 300 hundred years later. O’Connor wrote the pieces in a manner and style he felt his family could have heard along the way. The Suite begins with Irish music, perhaps similar to the music O’Connor’s family brought with them. Then in a thoughtful progression, he reveals music they must have encountered living in early America. Strings & Threads musically describes how folk music styles hundreds of years apart are interconnected – possessing a common thread – from an Irish reel to jazz. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels but portions of the piece can be appropriate for beginners. This piece was composed for the 1941 film 'Dangerous Moonlight', a World War II love story with a sweeping soundtrack to match the romance of the plot. The film’s producers apparently approached Rachmaninov to compose the score, but when he declined, the score for Dangerous Moonlight and the Warsaw Concerto was composed by Richard Addinsell. The composer’s unashamed use of indulgent harmonies and grand Romantic gestures goes a great way towards explaining why the Warsaw Concerto remains hugely popular today. An attractive concert item, scored for 2122 2230 Timpani and Strings. All parts including the piano solo are included together with the full score.

The film’s producers apparently approached Rachmaninov to compose the score, but when he declined, the score for Dangerous Moonlight and the Warsaw Concerto was composed by Richard Addinsell. Originally a two part tune, Texas fiddling pioneer Benny Thomasson arranged a version that approximates the one most performed today. Mark O’Connor and Edgar Meyer built upon the Thomasson variations to create a unique and thrilling violin and bass duet that first appeared on O’Connor’s Grammy winning recording, New Nashville Cats. O’Connor has adapted the 2nd part to include viola, viola and cello to offer four different versions of the arrangement. Limerock is a fine example of how a tune O’Connor learned by ear as a youth evolved into a virtuoso piece in a classical setting. It is most suitable for advanced and intermediate levels.
