We must focus on improving the conditions of men and women. We must begin with the young Afghan girl. Saving that one life is to save humanity itself. In this new century, we must start from understanding Peace must be made real and tangible in the daily lives of every man and woman. The notion that what is ours must conflict with what is theirs is both false and dangerous. It has resulted in endless enmity and conflict. It has led men to commit great crimes in the name of a higher power. It need not be so. We can love what we are, without hating what we are not, without hating who we are not. The girl born in Afghanistan today is just one test of our humanity – But it is the only test that matters.

CeÌcile Chaminade (1857-1944) was born in Paris and began studying piano at an early age with her mother, she later studied violin and composition privately and became hugely popular in France, the UK and USA. She was the first female composer to receive the LeÌgion d’Honneur and often performed for Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle. Her US debut was with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1908 where she performed her own Concertstück op. 40 for piano and orchestra. Despite the fact that most of her 400+ works were published during her lifetime her music fell into obscurity after her death; though in recent years there has been much renewed interest. Romance was first published by Enoch & Cie, Paris in a collection of twelve short pieces called Album des Enfants vol. 1, op. 123. Many of the works in both volumes 1 and 2 have been on the syllabuses of the major music examination boards.

One of Canada's best-known poets, Bliss Carman was born in 1861 in Fredericton, New Brunswick; composer Stephen Smith was born just over a century later in the adjoining province of Nova Scotia. In Christmas Song, Smith sets three lovely stanzas written by Carman in the 1920's to an expressive mezzo-soprano melody, accompanied by a lush, extended-harmony organ part. The text muses on the way a child's birth brings joy to mankind, renews the earth, and even imparts added lustre to the sun and stars.

Sweet Gingerbread Man is a song with music by Michel Legrand and lyrics by Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman. It was recorded originally for director Leonard Horn's 1970 screen version of Robert T. Westbrook's 'The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart', a film about young people in Greenwich Village, New York. The song for the film was performed by the Mike Curb Congregation, who went on to record other film songs, including I Was Born in Love with You, another Legrand/Alan Bergman/Marilyn Bergman composition, this time for the 1970 film version of 'Wuthering Heights'. Sammy Davis Jr., Jack Jones, the Muppets, Bobby Sherman and Sarah Vaughan have all recorded versions of this charming, gently swinging classic; from it's distinctive opening riff to it's closing jazzy phrases, your audience is sure to love this sweet, summery classic.

Romance Anónimo (Anonymous Romance) is a piece for guitar, also known as Estudio en Mi de Rubira (Study in E by Rubira), Spanish Romance, Romance de España, Romance de Amor, Romance of the Guitar, Romanza and Romance d'Amour among other names.Its origins and authorship are currently in question. It is suspected of originally being a solo instrumental guitar work, from the 19th century. It has variously been attributed to Antonio Rubira, David del Castillo, Francisco Tárrega, Fernando Sor, Daniel Fortea, Miguel Llobet, Antonio Cano, Vicente Gómez, and Narciso Yepes. The Anónimo (anonymous) part of its name has been incorporated over the years due to this uncertainty. The question of authorship has probably been propagated by three main reasons: the lack of claim by its true author, the desire to avoid paying copyright fees, and the desire of publishing companies to claim the lucrative copyright of this world-famous piece.The style of the piece is that of the Parlour music of the late 19th century in Spain or South America, having a closed three-part form: the first in the minor key and the second being in the major key, with the third being a restatement of the first.Narciso Yepes (1927 - 1997) interpreted and is listed as the author of the piece in René Clément's 1952 film Jeux interdits (Forbidden Games). The popularity of the film gave the piece worldwide fame. Yepes currently has the copyright of this composition in Spain although recordings and manuscripts of this song predate 1952. Newer publications show Yepes as the arranger and the piece being of anonymous authorship, or authored by Fernando Sor.The official statement from Narciso Yepes and the Yepes heirs is that Narciso Yepes, being a young boy, originally composed the piece for his mother when he was about seven years old (c.1934) and soon thereafter performed it between acts at the Teatro Guerra, in Lorca, Spain. Some time later, he recounts, when he was thirteen years old he attended a performance in Valencia and heard his composition performed by another guitarist, who indicated the authorship as anonymous. Yepes contends that the melody had been plagiarized (with some changes to the arrangement) by someone who, he assumes, must have attended that first performance. However, Yepes was born 1927 and cannot be the author of the work, since it was already recorded in 1900 and published before 1925 (possibly 1913) by J.A. MEDINA e HIJO; and in 1919 in themethod of Pedro Mascaró y Reissig, etc. Vicente Gomez (1911-2001) published it and performed it in 1941 in the Hollywood movie Blood and Sand with Tyrone Powerand Rita Hayworth, also attributing authorship of the song to himself. Anyway, the piano arrangement of the brilliant Shigeo Ida caught my attention and I decided to rework it somewhat into this trio for strings. Enjoy!

This score is for two Readers, handbells (3 octaves) and organ.A medieval folk belief of old Europe was that of all the animals miraculously starting to speak at the birth of the Christ Child. In about 1630, William Austin, a poet and lawyer in London, drew on this traditional belief to write one of his Carrols, for Christmas-day, in which he imagined what the most Stentorian animal of all, the rooster, might say about the new-born Holy Infant in Bethlehem. In setting William Austin’s carrol to music, James Siddons has given the organ the role of creating a soundscape to underpin the drama of Chanticleer’s proclamation. Following each of Austin’s three stanzas (in dramatic recitation by the Readers), an adaptation of the old French tune O Come, Emmanuel is played by handbells in a harmonic style that recalls the pealing of church bells on Christmas morning. This work is appropriate for the beginning of Advent and Christmas day worship, and in a service or program of Christmas music; for example, a service of lessons and carols. New Zealand-based music teacher and folk music compiler Neil Colquhoun claimed to have collected the song around 1966 from one F. R. Woods. Woods, who was in his 80s at the time, had allegedly heard the song from his uncle. it was attributed to one D.H. Rogers. It has been speculated that Rogers was the uncle of Woods and that Rogers had worked as a teenage pirate or shore whaler in the early-to-mid 19th century, composing this and another song in his later years and eventually passing them on to his nephew as an old man. Nathan Evers recorded the work in 2021 during the COVID pandemic and it became a viral sensation with house-bound Tik-Tokers sparking a whole re-introduction of sea shanties in what was termed Shanty-Tok. This string quartet arrangement gives all instruments a chance at the melody, and adds the affectation of a foot-stomp and a shout at the ends of verses. The history of whaling in New Zealand stretches from the late eighteenth century to 1965. In 1831, the British-born Weller brothers Edward, George, and Joseph, who had emigrated to Sydney in 1829, founded a whaling station at Otakou near modern Dunedin in the South Island of New Zealand, seventeen years before Dunedin was established. The Weller brothers had on their voyage to New Zealand brought in the 'Lucy Ann' (the Weller brothers' barque) a good deal of rum and a good deal of gunpowder. From 1833, the Weller brothers sold provisions to whalers in New Zealand from their base at Otakou, which they had named Otago in approximation of the local MÄori pronunciation. The song's lyrics describe a whaling ship called the Billy o' Tea [Note: a billy is a pot in which water is boiled to make tea or coffee] and its hunt for a right whale. The song describes how the ship's crew hope for a wellerman to arrive and bring them supplies of luxuries. According to the song's listing on the website New Zealandfolk Song, the workers at these bay-whaling stations (shore whalers) were not paid wages, they were paid in slops (ready made clothing), spirits and tobacco. The chorus continues with the crew singing of their confidence that the tonguin' will be the last step of their plight. Tonguing in this context refers to the practice of cutting strips of whale blubber to render into oil. Subsequent verses detail the captain's determination to bring in the whale in question, even as time passes and the quartet of whaling boats is lost in the fight. In the last verse, the narrator conveys how the Billy o' Tea is still considered locked in an ongoing struggle with the whale, with the wellerman making his regular call to strengthen the captain and crew. Johanna Müller-Hermann (1868-1941) was born in Vienna and after several years as a primary school teacher returned to music studying with a number of teachers including Alexander von Zemlinsky and Josef Foerster. As a composer she wrote a large number of chamber, vocal and orchestral works and enjoyed much success during her lifetime. She became a professor of music theory at the New Vienna Conservatory in 1918 and much of her music was published by Universal Edition and Musikhaus Doblinger. Zwei Frauenchöre mit orchester op. 10 sets a text by Friedrich Hebbel (1813-1863) and a German translation of a poem by the Danish writer Jens Peter Jacobsen (1847-1885). The work was first published by Universal Edition in 1915.

In this second of his piano concerto, he blends jazz with sensitivity, rhythmic to lyrical. This concerto is entitled New York Tour because like the city that inspired it, it travels throughout times, musical neighborhoods and cultures. Great compliment in programming with Mozart piano concertos or Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue to feature American classical composers. At these schools many of his early pieces were premiered and performed, with one work being selected for main-stage production in the season. Moving to Los Angeles and then settling in New York, he performed professionally sometimes as a singer, sometimes as a pianist, sometimes as choral conductor. He composed incidental music for the stage. In 2002 he founded a composers collective where they showcased their work. He was one of the first composers to participate in the American Music Center's initial on-line library. The New Jersey Concert Opera and the Gay Men's Chorus of New Jersey also featured his comic operas and art songs. From 2005 he moved to Costa Rica where he organized concerts with visiting guest artists to present his chamber music to the public.
