Inspired by the rich cultural tapestry of the city’s Latinx communities, this composition brings together the driving beats of salsa, the syncopated grooves of Hip-Hop, and the sweet, nostalgic melodies of song and bolero, all underpinned by modern harmonic structures and atonal passages. It is an exploration of dance. Beyond its rhythmic celebration, “Nueva York Tropical” also carries a message of social consciousness. It draws attention to the challenges faced by Latino communities, in the struggles of gentrification. The composition seeks to embody the resilience and spirit of these communities, when the musicians are called upon to chant “Shelter the community for free” repeatedly in protest mode. Through its infectious rhythms, bold atonal sections, and idyllic melodies, the piece becomes both a tribute and a call to action for social justice thru music. In “Nueva York Tropical”, the music doesn’t just invite you to sway, to dance – it also invites you to reflect, to think and to recognize the vibrant contributions that pop culture can instill in contemporary classical music.

Now at age 58, Burnett reaches another level of achievement with Firebird, showcasing a fine working quartet and a set of compositions rich in beauty, subtlety and sophistication. There’s a remarkable lyrical ease and harmonic savvy in the compositions that make up Firebird, not least of all on the title track with its layered flutes and Latin-tinged rhythmic feel. Burnett’s legato eloquence and depth of expression on the slow 4/4 Ballad for An Optimist is another highlight. His choice of the inspired, metrically shifting A Risk I Take, by French horn virtuoso and colleague Mark Taylor, tells us much about his refined taste and interpretive abilities. Now at age 58, Burnett reaches another level of achievement with Firebird, showcasing a fine working quartet and a set of compositions rich in beauty, subtlety and sophistication. There’s a remarkable lyrical ease and harmonic savvy in the compositions that make up Firebird, not least of all on the title track with its layered flutes and Latin-tinged rhythmic feel. Burnett’s legato eloquence and depth of expression on the slow 4/4 Ballad for An Optimist is another highlight. His choice of the inspired, metrically shifting A Risk I Take, by French horn virtuoso and colleague Mark Taylor, tells us much about his refined taste and interpretive abilities. 'All the Young Dudes' is a fun period piece and a mid-tempo glam rock classic from the early 1970s, originally sung by Mott the Hoople but made more famous by David Bowie. The lyric is partly about being young and free, and partly about gender. and being a ‘dude’. It tells the story of several 'dudes' and celebrates what they get up to. Like many Bowie lyrics, it is double-edged, and the melody is catchy and fun to sing. Originally sung by the New York City Gay Men's Chorus, the arrangement sticks closely to the original groove and form, and is designed for an intermediate level group. There is also a solo for a Baritenor with pop sound.

Caravan is one of Duke Ellington's (1899-1974) most famous compositions—although he didn't actually write it. That credit goes to Puerto Rican trombonist Juan Tizol (1900-1984), a member of the Ellington's big band from 1929 to 1944. Tizol composed the theme in 1936 and promptly sold the rights to lyricist Irving Mills for only $25. The song became an instant hit—jazz critic Ted Gioia expllains that it fit perfectly with the musical exoticism that patrons were demanding at [Ellington's] regular gig at the Cotton Club in Harlem. Indeed, much jazz from this era, especially Ellington's, was steeped in Orientalist aesthetics. Although we hear it now as a self-contained musical phenomenon, we must acknowledge this music's problematics even as we continue to celebrate its progressive and revolutionary qualities. Part of my interest in this piece is in its capacity as a vessel in which I can explore my own multiform identity as an expatriate of the Middle East, a carillonist, and a lover of jazz. This arrangement reflects what might happen when these three perspectives collide. Ellington recorded Caravan more than 100 times, and the names of its additional interpreters reads as a history of jazz itself: Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Nat King Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis and dozens more all brought their own spin to the tune. What makes it particularly special, though, is its appeal to listeners outside the jazz fandom. The 2014 film Whiplash introduced mass audiences to the song's unique atmosphere and to the genius of the Duke and his sidemen, thanks to an outstanding big band arrangement by John Wasson. My setting of the tune for the carillon recalls both Duke and Tizol's original version and this more recently popular edition.In this arrangement, I hope to highlight the carillon's capacity as a percussion instrument, and to use this as a bridge into the world of jazz. The lyrics feature 'Studio 54', the archetypal disco space in New York at the time. Studio 54 was also a special home and iconic space of celebration for the LGBTQIA+ community, at this key time in the developmetn of dance music.
