Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Trumpets in C with Brass Ensemble and Timpani is a rarity for the Baroque era when solos for brass instruments were almost non-existent. The valveless nascent Trumpets were very difficult to play. But as with Bach, there must have been a few brave souls who mastered the instrument and inspired the composer to write his inspired work.As with most of Vivaldi's concertos, this one begins with a quick and sparkling movement to catch the attention of the audience and to showcase the bright tones of the solo trumpets. This is followed by a contrasting brief and languid second movement. The final movement is back to brilliant mode with quick energy and intricate passages for the soloists. (Encylopedia Britannica).Niels-Ole Bo Johansen has created a very unique arrangement for the two solo Trumpets with Brass Ensemble and Timpani...unique in that the accompaniment instruments are almost all conical (except for the trombones who can blend nicely into that pool of round sounds). This gives the listener a sharp contrast between the brilliance of the soloists and the plush sound of the accompaniment.The 6 1/2 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers. The instrumentation is for: 2 solo Trumpets in A, 2 Cornets in B-flat, Flugelhorn, 2 Horns in F, 3 Trombones, Euphonium, 2 Tubas, and Timpani.

The work is in a late Romantic style with hints of expressionism, about 4 minutes in length and is appropriate for advanced intermediate level performers (range is up to a high B).

He performed in the famous Gewandhaus orchestra of Leipzig and then the Royal orchestra of Berlin for over 42 seasons. His many compositions from the mid 19th Century are beginning to be unearthed. Prayer for Trombone and Piano has been edited by Niels-Ole Bo Johansen who has brought this work back to life. It is a serious work in the German Romantic style of moderate difficulty marked Adagio Religioso. This composition may likely have been dedicated in praise of the Danish King.

The Nocturne for Trombone and Organ by Alfred Hildebrandt Sørensen was most likely written while he studied violin and composition at the Copenhagen Conservatory of Music from 1903-1905. It was dedicated to trombonist Anton Hansen, who performed it for the first time at the Tivoli Concert Hall on August 8th, 1918, and then at the King's Garden at the Copenhagen Municipality's Free Concerts, undoubtedly in arrangements for symphony orchestra and wind band respectively.This very expressive work, beautifully edited by Niels-Ole Bo Johansen is suitable for intermediate performers as it is all in bass clef and of modest technique and range.The material is from Anton Hansen's sheet music collection in the Royal Library in Copenhagen.The work has been beautifully recorded by Mr. Johansen and organist Ulrik Spang-Hanssen (sample below on YouTube) as part of The Danish Trombone Heritage, a 2-CD album of over twenty original works from the early 20th Century composed by Danish composers for Professor Hansen.Cherry Classics with Mr. Johansen will be publishing all of these works.

Niels-Ole Bo Johansen has recently discovered a hidden treasure of relatively unknown and forgotten works of Danish origin for the Trombone from the early 20th Century. This series of music will be subtitled The Danish Trombone Heritage and will be published by Cherry Classics over the next while. Below is Niels' description of Romance, Op. 13 by Joachim Bruun de Neergaard composed in 1915.Anton Hansen's (father of the Danish School for Trombone) first meeting with Joachim Bruun de Neergaard (1877-1929) was rather a disastrous one. Hansen an extraordinary Trombonist, also a very fine pianist, was hired to play at a dinner dance at Skjoldnæsholm manor. A young man insisted on playing along with the tunes Hansen performed - on a terribly out -of-tune ocarina. Hansen writes in his memoirs that his first thought was that the young man was slightly retarded. As it turned out, he was the son of the family living in the manor, which made the situation even more awkward. That young man, Joachim Bruun de Neergaard was not the slightest bit retarded. He was on the contrary highly intelligent and managed, in addition to his composition studies, to attain a degree in law with the highest honors.The Romance for Trombone and Orchestra, here in the version for Trombone and Piano, reveals a composer with a very fine sense of the trombone’s singing qualities.This work is perfect for advanced intermediate performers and is almost 7 minutes in length.Trombone soloist Johansen and his collaborator, Pianist Erik Kaltoft beautiifully perform Romance on their 2018 album The French Connection. Although written in 1810, it was discovered and first published in 1867, forty years after the composer's death.It is uncertain who Elise is.... possibly Therese Malfatti, the woman whom he proposed to (eventually turning him down), but whomever it was, she was a close friend and possibly an important person in his life.This superb arrangement by Niels-Ole Bo Johansen for Euphonium/Tuba Quartet is challenging for the top part and of medium difficulty for the other 3 parts.

The wistful character of its very hummable melody is a great example from the age of parlor music, composed for amateur performance in the home and enjoyed by all ages.This 3 ½-minute work has been beautifully arranged for Trombone and Organ by Niels-Ole Bo Johansen. There are two versions included with this arrangement: one for advanced performers that goes up to high D's and another for intermediate performers in bass clef and with a moderate range only to high G.

It is a great example of an original work from the Classical era.

Melodie for Trombone and Orchestra by early 20th Century Danish composer Axel Jørgensen was forgotten for quite a while but has been rediscovered, edited, and recorded by noted Danish Trombonist and educator Niels-Ole Bo Johansen. The work is in an impressionist style, about 5 minutes in length, and is appropriate for advanced intermediate level performers (range is up to an optional high D-flat).

Schweizer-Klänge (Swiss Sounds) for Bass Trombone and Wind Ensemble is a work by Friederich Belcke that may be performed on a small-bore Bass Trombone or large-bore Tenor Trombone. The work was composed and first performed in 1835 by German composer and soloist, Friederich Belcke as a solo to be accompanied by a military band and dedicated to His Royal Highness, the Prince Christian Friederich of Denmark.This work has been rediscovered and beautifully edited for solo (Bass) Trombone and Wind Ensemble by Danish solo Trombonist and pedagog, Niels Ole-Bo Johansen.The music reminisces about the sounds of Switzerland....the awesome snow-covered mountains of the Alps, lush green forests, deep blue skies, calm lakes, and rushing river waters. It is a joyful work with not a care in the world.This work ranges from pedal B-flat to high B-flat and can be performed by a moderately advanced performer on either a Tenor or Bass Trombone.

Road Movie was commissioned by Professor Niels-Ole Bo Johansen of the Royal Academy of Music, Arhus Denmark and premiered in Salt Lake City Utah for the International Trombone Festival 2008. Wayne Siegel has written a compelling and dramatic musical canvas using a large, 16-part Trombone Ensemble. He uses many special effects on the Trombone to give his score a vivid sound imagery. Road Movie consists of three movements, each depicting a scene in an imaginary road movie. The first movement, AM, is set on an early morning on a country highway. The abbreviation AM is, of course, ambiguous, implying both the early hours of the day as well as the type of radio that was most common in cars in my youth. The second movement, Canyon Canon depicts a landscape inspired by the Grand Canyon. The third movement, Highway, the road movie comes to a most tragic end. This work of about 23 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.
