One of the earliest CDs I bought was a CBS Great Performances disc entitled “Pachelbel’s Canon: Baroque Favorites.†I can recall listening to it over and over. Among my favorites were Handel’s “The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba,†Mouret’s “Rondeau,†Albinoni’s “Adagio for Strings and Organ in G minor (which I later discovered was actually written by Remo Giazotto in 1958), and, of course, Pachelbel’s Canon in D.The Canon has been a source of musical inspiration to a great number of artists over the years including Maroon 5’s “Memories†in 2019 and George Winston’s “Variations on the Kanon by Johann Pachelebel†from his 1982 album December.My arrangement is a series of variations starting with a simple statement of the chord progression and gradually making use of the themes as the piece progresses. In this respect, it is more of a chaconne than a true canon. (A chaconne being a type of musical composition which uses a repeated short harmonic progression as a vehicle for variations and melodic invention). It eventually works its way to a section of forte chords based on the rhythm of the second theme before gradually returning to a simpler use of the chords and bass line from the opening.

As filled with a sense of hopelessness that O Come, O Come, Emmanuel is, this prelude is brimming with unbridled joy; from the thunderous opening to the bell-ringing ending. With influences ranging from Handel to Mannheim Steamroller, I wanted to write something that expresses the full glory of this hymn. While the hymn itself has 7 verses, I only chose to use four of them including the fifth verse referencing Sinners…doomed for guilt to endless pains where I moved to a minor key before coming back for the final verse and a return to the musical material of the opening.

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.950924). This simple, yet beautiful lullaby to the sleeping Christ-child has long been a favorite of mine. The piece begins with a gentle rocking figure in the left hand while the right hand represents the twinkling of the stars in the night sky. In the first verse, a simple statement of the melody begins over the figure established in the left hand. By the second verse, both hands have introduced another voice to the harmony. There are two popular musical settings of the lyrics, and in the third verse I tried to combine the rhythmic and melodic elements of both. The prelude closes with an air of wonder and reverence as the Child drifts back to sleep while the star shines overhead.

Elements of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Prokofiev, Scriabin, Chopin, Sondheim and others are found throughout the collection. This set of preludes was written from 2019-2020. Numbers 3, 11, 21 and 24 were written during the COVID-19 pandemic while all the rest were pre-pandemic compositions.

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1073968). The most Impressionistic of Opus 3, the cathedral in this instance is the forest rather than the sunken one from Debussy’s prelude. The canopy of the trees is the vaulted ceiling and the trunks serve as the columns. As one walks down the colonnade, the spaces between the trees serve as windows onto the magnificence of nature. From a musical standpoint, the thick, rich chords of the right hand create a feeling of majesty and awe broken by the melismatic figures of the wind through the boughs. Once again, it is of great importance to balance the chords to bring forth the melody.

As a vocal major and accompanist during my undergraduate and graduate years, I became familiar with a great number of lieder by Franz Schubert. It's far too difficult to pick a favorite, but this song was one of the first pieces I learned to sing. As common in so many of his songs, Heidenröslein has a very simple, folk-like melody, and the accompaniment almost has the feel of a pianist vamping at the keyboard. My arrangement is very much inspired by the music of George Winston. The right hand has a somewhat ostinato feel in the opening. When the melody enters, the right hand figure is moved into the left hand while the melody floats above as though carried on a summer breeze. The second verse takes on a more music box feel as it makes frequent pauses in the music, but the melody is always present in the right hand, even when it is surrounded by a steady stream of eighth notes.The work closes with a return of the opening material and fragments of the melody tossed back and forth like the falling petals of the rose on the heath.

While I was still in high school, the moment I first heard Holst’s suite,“The Planets,†it quickly became one of my favorite works of Classical music. “Mars, the Bringer of War,†the first movement of the suite, was easily my favorite followed by “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity.†The nobility of the slow theme, which this arrangement is based on, resonated deep within my soul. Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1125803). I first became familiar with this tune in high school choir when we performed “Sing We Now of Christmas†for a holiday concert. I did not know that it had originated as a French carol from the late 15th/early16th century and like many of my favorite carols, it is set in a minor key. I had forgotten all about it until a friend suggested arranging it for this collection. As I began working on the piece, I was torn between staying true to the feel of the original and this growing sense I had to write something more dramatic and more inspired by one of my favorite composers, Ralph Vaughn Williams. I chose a much slower tempo than the French carol and as a result it has more depth and a sense of gravitas, reflecting the mystery of the birth of Christ. At the end of the first verse, I transition to the parallel major key and the music takes on a more lighthearted and almost dance-like character as the stable is visited by shepherds and kings alike to see for themselves the sleeping child and enjoy the sense of wonder and amazement at such a scene. The music then moves back to the opening and the original key as the kings offer their gifts to the babe and prepare to return home. Even though it is in a minor key, there is an overpowering grandeur in this prelude reflecting the events to come in His short life on this earth, but even more the importance to all that his sacrifice would bring. There is a brief coda that returns to the major key with the promise of hope offered by one so small.

I must admit that I was far more familiar with the 1956 setting of this poem as sung by Bing Crosby to music by Johnny Marks than I was to the one found in many hymnals. It was on several of the Christmas albums that would be played on the phonograph in our house during the holiday season. However, I chose to arrange the carol setting for this collection as it resonated more deeply with me and seemed to better capture the essence of the poem by Longfellow. He wrote it during the Civil War, on Christmas Day of 1863, and several of the verses make reference to the war. While I did not set any of the Civil War verses, there is an almost martial quality to the opening music and one can almost hear the brass choir ringing out in the first verse. With each subsequent verse, the rhythm of the right hand becomes quicker, moving from half notes to quarter note triplets to eighth notes and finally to eighth note triplets in the final verse. For the most part, the left hand maintains the steady beat of quarter notes, with the exception of the final verse where it begins to move in eighth notes setting up a two-against-three pattern between the hands. It is the most jubilant of the verses and feels like an explosion of sound as the bells ring out across all the land proclaiming God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail, With peace on earth, good-will to men..

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1125787). This is another lullaby in my favorite meter of 7/4. The melody floats along as though on a peaceful river of eighth-notes supplied by the left hand. In the first verse, the melody is played in octaves with the occasional addition of an alto voice at the ends of phrases, which seems to comment upon the music..to reinforce what was just said. In the second verse, there is the addition of harmony in the right hand in either sixths or thirds. Soon the texture grows thicker as the chords become three-part and finally arriving at five-part chords as the piece reaches its climax. There is a dream-like quality to this arrangement which is never disturbed throughout. The music feels like a gentle balm for the weary soul… a soul which is accosted by trials every day, but that can take solace in the promise of the babe born this night.

The influence of Erik Satie can be heard in this prelude as it brings to mind his famous “Gymnopedie.†The unusual meter of 7/8 gives the music a feeling of the vastness of time and space as it almost never seems to end, but continuously spins out from measure to measure. Judicious use of the pedal is necessary to maintain the crystal clarity of the music while still allowing the harmonies to transport the listener to a realm of unending serenity and calm.
