German.Brahms’ Hungarian Dances are among the most popular compositions in the field of light classical music with dance no. 5 probably being the most well-known one of the altogether 21 pieces of the cycle. It is this dance the arrangement for saxophone quintet at hand is based on. Answers to the questions to what extent Brahms incorporated traditional Hungarian melodies into these pieces or whether the dances represent original creations of his own written in a “Hungarian style†might be found in specialist literature or on the internet. These sources may also be consulted to get further information on the history of origins of these compositions.The original version of the Fifth Hungarian Dance for Piano Four-Hands published in 1869 is written in F# minor. For most of the arrangements (for orchestra and for any other conceivable type of ensemble) created thereafter in rapid succession - but also for this present version written for saxophone quartet – the key of G minor was chosen.The markings for tempo and dynamics included are based on the original composition but also take into account certain performance practices. The individual voices take turns in executing the main melody. The brackets appearing in the score and in the individual parts mark the beginning and the end of those passages where the respective instrument takes the lead. The arrangement for quintet at hand can be performed soloistically or in chorus.

As with the navigation of grief, this music has hopeful and even joyous moments. But despair is never far from the surface.Throughout the Lament the bass clarinet takes on the role of the mourner. The melodic lines are at times sad, confused, hopeful, prayerful, or even playful. There is a continuous sense of searching, for answers, for reasons, for a resolution that can never be. The marimba offers solace, empathy, compassion, and distraction to the dolorous melody.A tone of sorrow is established by the marimba with its evocative minor key introduction. The aria begins as the bass clarinet presents a plaintive expression of the main melody. Soon, a rhythmic mood settles in, the bass clarinet yearning and searching for answers, as the marimba offers support with jazz inspired harmonies. There are hints of melancholia, of nostalgia, even a very brief waltz, as the feelings spin freely.The tale ends as it begins, with a return to the opening sound world. A return to plainly stated sorrow, unadorned, pure, simple. The origins of this lullaby can be traced back to 15th-century England. Pioneers from the British Isles brought it with them to the American Appalachians. Written in three verses, its lyrics tell of four seemingly impossible gifts the singer gave my love. The first verse describes each gift: cherry that has no stone, a chicken that has no bone. a story that has no end and a baby with no cryin'. The second verse poses the riddle: how can such items exist? The third provides the answers: A cherry when it's bloomin', it has no stone. A chicken when it's pippin', it has no bone. The story of I love you, it has no end. A baby when it's sleepin', has no cryin'. This Riddle Song has enjoyed somewhat of a revival since mid-20th century, making appearances in various movies, TV shows and recordings. In 1956, Jerry Livingston and Paul Francis adapted The Riddle Song tune, added an original bridge and created new lyrics; Johnny Mathis recorded it as The Twelfth of Never, giving the haunting melody probably its greatest surge in popularity. This arrangement is in G major and opens with an upbeat introduction. For the first statement of the melody, tempo slows and Trumpets alternate the lead. On the second time through, tempo speeds up slightly and tuba takes the lead. For the third, tempo is back to the opening speed and Horn in F plays the melody. On the fourth time through, Trumpets and Trombone frame the tune in a call-and-response form. In the fifth, Trombone takes the lead. In the sixth and final statement, Horn in F and Trombone play melody at half speed while Trumpets play a fairly complicated counterpoint (at what may seem like double speed!). This, until the last phrase (A baby when it's sleepin'), when the melody switches over to Trumpets and Trombone takes the counterpoint. Trumpet 1 plays its A above the staff a number of times. Tuba's lowest note is its F down below the staff. Otherwise, notes for all instruments are well within normal playing range. Because of the recommended tempo, the countermelody at measures 68-83 could be problematic for Trumpets and Trombone and may require a little extra work. Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 42 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. The piece incorporates the tune of the Welsh National Anthem along with the hymn tune Cwm Rhondda. The movement moves between the despair and loneliness of the night that one can feel, even when sleeping next to a close partner, and the racing desperation of the mind, whereby patriotic affiliations will calm the soul at these times. the movement finishes with the tune of Land of my father's resonating but even this is of no comfort, and the troubled mind lies awake and the movement finishes with a flurry of discord.The Solitude - 5.34 in length:The movement begins with a haunting melody led by the Oboe. the Horn soon joins in as do other instruments of the quintet. A simple Gregorian type rhythm and chant passes through the quintet with the Oboe leading the movement.Crescendos and attacked notes give the piece a rise and fall showing the mood of the soul that alternates between a calm and a peak of mood as sleep is hard to come by and a restless state is invoked.It appears that the oboe will be leading the soul into peace yet, at the last moment, the quintet joins in with chords of attack and crescendo followed by a sharp diminuendo to end the piece.The soul has sought solace, yet, all they find is loneliness.Brad's Broadcast - 3:01 in length:The restless soul awakes after a restless night. The world is full of voices, advice, motivation and answers.In this lively movement, the soul searches for solace and finds sense from some sources, yet, the cacophony of contrary advice and the nature of some disciples of business and life coaches becomes confusing. there are some real gems of advice available, but, the noise of others drowns out the sense and sanity.The soul manages to find some humour in the forums and media, they smile, but the relief is short lived.The movement ends with all voices descending away in a glissando and silence is restored.By His Own Hand - 4:26 in length:This movement reflects the desperation of the soul. they have sought solace, humour has passed them by, they do not feel that they can continue to live.The piece starts with a cadenza played by a viola. A violin soon duets in this Jewish styled lament.Throughout the movement the brass are spartan, reflecting the confusion of the soul. The ability to cling onto the world and to continue living is a losing battle.The waves of the lament increase in their presence, but not velocity, for the depressed souul is reaching the point of no return and of no choice.They will soon depart from the world by their own hand. The seven modesThis collection of PDFs is something I am very proud of and I believe it has been my most well recieved PDF upload on the internet. Finding chord charts that simply list chords are a dime a dozen, and can be found anywhere. It is much rarer for a chord sheet to try to explain what order they go in and even rarer still to find it for guitar. It's difficult because it is an art, and of course there really is no wrong answers in composing (especially on Halloween I always joke). I personally haven't seen anything else quite like this on the internet.Many music theory books seem abstract and impractical whereas these chord charts show music theory applied to guitar. The aim is to memorize them so that you can understand them in all 12 keys. These chord progressions are of course a great composition aid. Tips:1. I find sheets like this to be excellent practice to play by ear. If the music is relaxing I play blue chords, if it is intense I play red chords. Once you get into the groove, and you know no one is changing key, it's as simple as that.2. When playing by ear, even if you get the exact chord wrong but you still get the correct color, it will still sound like you harmonizing the song correctly!!! See chords categorized by purpose rather than name will elegantly simplify how music actually works.3. The reason why we study the roman numerals is to be able to think about all of music in a single keyless key to allow for optimum clarity.4. One issue that needs to be fixed: what to do about the 11 other keys? One easy and quick fix is to use a guitar capo (or downtune) to get to all the other keys. I can't imagine giving out 56 pages of chord progressions to each of my students, it's way too much. Instead, I teach strategies on how these work in all 12 keys. 5. Order = Blue, Yellow, Red, Blue for stereotypical chord progressions that truely progress. These is such a thing called a chord succession where it is not the previous order. Again, try not to see music in terms of right and wrong. Everything expresses an emotion. For example, if there is a song devoid of red chords, it will result in more peaceful music. In the face of the spirit sickness of his people, Jeremiah cried out, “Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there?” This song answers in the affirmative: “There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul.”Thus Jeremiah’s dismal view is met with hope and reassurance.The song was first collected by the African-American musicologist Frederick J. John Donne (1572 – 1631) was one of the greatest of the metaphysical poets in England, a group that included George Herbert, Andrew Marvell, and possibly John Milton. An Anglican priest with a less than perfect moral reputation, Donne expressed through his poetry (notably, the Holy Sonnets) the incongruities of human attempts at living the Christian life.In the present poem, the speaker reveals his struggles with sin-the sin he was born with, the sin he commits daily, the sin through which he influences others to sin, and the sin he has quit for a short while, only to take up again for many more years. He confesses yet another sin: the fear that he will perish on the shore, presumably to die with unforgiven sins, consigned to eternal damnation. His desperate plea is that God’s Son shall shine as he shines now and heretofore. If God answers this prayer, he will fear no more, and will know that all his sins, including the sin of fear, are finally forgiven.This musical setting uses subtle inflection of rhythm and meter to mirror the text, aiming for natural prosody of speech and expressive accentuation. Melodic contours emphasize important words, while harmonic placement projects the various moods throughout the poem. The key relationships involve mostly shifts of minor 3rds; starting in D minor, the piece moves through several keys, reaching its final statement in D major. A variety of textures maintains aural interest: clusters and close harmony, full divisi chords, and an imitative passage painting the words, won others to sin, and made my sin their door. A series of shimmering major chords brings the work to a close, declaiming the words, Thy Son shall shine as he shines now and heretofore, and, I fear no more.

Thus, until the end of time the world will stay mysterious - the world seems to be a persistent secret, that wants to be discovered at all times anew.The musical motif of the Question begins with the very first sound of the piece - a dissonance that is harmoniously resolved again. This motif reflects the curiosity that lies dormant in all people. The dissonance creates a tension that can be seen as an impetus for the search for answers. The resolution to a major chord describes the confidence of being able to find an answer to the question. This musical motif runs through the entire work, both in the dreamy bliss of being and in the dramatic passages in which the flood of questions seems to become frightening. In such sections, the dissonance is turning into a minor chord. At the dramatic climax, a tense dominant seventh chord leads to the resolution to major, which finally describes the euphoria after the answer of a very difficult question. After a further phase of relaxation, the gaze wanders over nature in all its glory. Until towards the end of the piece, the awareness finally sets in that every answer found raises a new question and thus the mystery remains forever.The PDF contains the score and all parts, already multiplied accordingly for a common number of musicians in a concert band. Inspired by my granddaughters' love of the knock-knock jokes based on the phrases; 'Knock-knock, who's there? Orange-orange who? orange you glad you're...' This is a rollicking piece with a swinging intro (repeated as bridge going into second A section) but segueing into a B section at a slower tempo and comprised completely of major sevenths! (all in broken chords and/or rolled chords with help for small hands by the use of damper pedal). Structure of a major 7th chord being: maj 3rd, m3rd, maj 3rd requires many accidentals in the B section. The mood surprises with a dramatic shift into this dreamy sequence created by these major sevenths which LH breaks up and RH answers with rolled same chord. Intro is sassy and attention-grabbing. With hands in unison, this familiar rhythmic pattern beginning with a very quick note (16th) with emphasis on the second note, introduces the first A section consisting of melody of broken chords with fun, fun lyrics that are tossed around between the hands in an antiphonal question/answer style. Interspersed are 5-finger position descending motifs as well as accompanying chords (or pieces of chords) placed on predictable beats for continuity and ease of learning. Chord progressions are unexpected and surprising, as are the 5-finger position motifs. Coda creates excitement by building D major full chord with hands in unison with much crescendo. Great for analyzing chords and 5-finger position melodies. Did you know the word 'orange' has no English rhyming word? I took that as a challenge and had FUN with the lyrics! Form: intro A interlude/bridge A coda Key of G harmonic minor w/lots of exploration into other majors and minors. Time signature 4/4. When singing the lyrics, I envision the first phrase being sung in a normal voice, the 2nd in an operatic voice, 3rd in a voice much like the 'Cookie Monster', and the 4th in a very childish voice. Tempo indication moderato, quarter note at 108 Lots of dynamic contrast. COMMENTARY Since 1926, Hindemith had been pursuing the objective of attracting children and amateur musicians to contemporary music through the composition of especially suitable musical works. In 1927, his musical-educational ambitions led among other projects to the involvement of the youth music movement in his plans for the Baden- Baden chamber music festival in which he was deeply involved in his capacity as member of the programme committee. Neue Musik Berlin 1930, a supplementary event following the Baden-Baden music festival, was to be devoted not only to radio plays, amateur choirs and electric music, but also to the field of ‘plays and songs for children’. The play for children Wir bauen eine Stadt was created in collaboration with the Berlin author Robert Seitz who provided the text and was premièred on 21 June 1930 by children aged between eight and twelve years old providing the final work in the concert Neue Musik Berlin 1930. The work swiftly achieved widespread dissemination and was available in a number of different languages within two years of its completion. Hindemith explained his pedagogical concept behind Wir bauen eine Stadt in a preface to the score as follows: ‘A play for children: this means that this work was more intended as a lesson and exercise for children themselves rather than for the entertainment of adult audiences. The form of the work can be altered according to the appropriate needs of the group of children involved: songs can be omitted and other musical pieces, dances or scenes inserted. An infinite number of children can participate in this work; apart from the minimum of three players for the “orchestraâ€, no specific instrumentation is specified. If numerous musicians are available (perhaps also those with instruments which are played in other registers than the pitches indicated in this work), these can be employed doubling at the octave of the two outer parts to achieve a more interesting texture. The music can additionally be livened up by tambourines, drums and other easily playable percussion. […]’ Alongside three instrumental movements, Hindemith’s play for children primarily consists of choral songs in verse form for one- and two-voice choir with a few simple individual solo parts. This classic children’s theatre composition has up to the present day retained its prominent place within the (school) theatre repertoire. Has the Rain a Father? is slightly unusual, and thus is attention-grabbing, something you want in a title. It sounds more biblical, calling attention to the allusion. COME WITH JOY is a wedding suite containing a bridesmaids' processional (REGENCY), bridal fanfare and march (SONG OF JOY), and a bright, quickly paced recessional (FESTIVE PSALM), which incorporates the melodies of the first two processionals in the B section. The bridal fanfare and bridal march was written for our daughter's wedding and later the other two were written in complimentary keys to complete the suite. Each piece may also be used separately, however, and do not have to be used together. This suite answers the need of brides who wish to have new music to use for her special day. With this suite, even though it was written as a cohesive group, the bride may choose to use as many or as few as she wishes and the bridal march with fanfare is certainly worth a consideration!An audio file of Song of Joy is included here to give you an idea of the flavor of the suite. It is the bridal march with fanfare. The recessional, FESTIVE PSALM, is lengthy and can accommodate large wedding parties without continuous repetition of the main theme. There are several sections in the work, keeping the interest level high because there's no continuous repetition of one main theme. For smaller wedding parties, where less exit music is needed, there are markings of suggested jump spots so that an entire section, or sections, can be omitted. The fact that two of the themes are taken from the previous two processionals ties the music together into an exciting cohesive unit. The music in this suite can also be used for church or school graduations, anniversaries, service music in church settings and other occasions.Regarding difficulty, the manuals require intermediate skills, but the pedals are fairly easy. Most organists who have experience in playing for weddings will be able to handle the techniques required for this suite.
