Flags of Freedom was composed in 1918, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2019. The piece is catalogued as Volume 5, No. 84.Section titles (such as “First Strain†and “Trioâ€) follow the measure numbers provided by that edition. Each instrument follows its full-band part as often as possible, the only exception being Trombone covering the Euphonium/Baritone part. Notes from the composer:The OSRS Lo-Fi Jams series is inspired by my favorite game: Old School RuneScape. Each jam is inspired by something specific from OSRS. Lo-fi music aesthetics correspond to many of my favorite things about OSRS. It is filled with repetitive or meditative patterns, enjoyment can be experienced without perfection, there is ample opportunity for creative freedom, and there is far more depth to be discovered than the casual observer likely imagines is possible. The jams are meant to be fun for the performer and allow for creative freedom within the composition’s given restrictions. Imperfections are accepted. Prioritize enjoying your instrument and the music.Bankstanding is for flexible instrumentation but was composed with the solo alto saxophone in mind as the performing force. It may be performed on any instrument or instruments. Octave transposition to play in a comfortable range is encouraged. Repeats are performed as many times as desired by the performer. When performed by multiple musicians, each musician chooses their own repeat structure. Minimums and maximums for duration and instrumentation can be seen below, but it is highly recommended to stay close to either the minimum or suggested duration and instrumentation rather than the maximum. Articulations are performed at the discretion of the individual performer. Suggested articulations are provided by dashed slur lines. If desired, a performer may insert quarter rests to breathe. Seen in this way, a concert reflects a value system that pits the individual against the group and poses a struggle of I against you. Surely this vehemence could be explained in a Beethovenian era when the concepts of human rights and individual freedom were fragile ideals.However, it is a different scale of values that my piano concerto tries to reflect: the idea of cooperation, of teamwork and of an orchestra as a living organism whose organs are not superior to one another, more vital than others, but fulfil different functions, qualitatively speaking.Every soloist plays a leading role, but this does not imply either subordination to the rest or denigration or subjugation of the rest. The fact that the soloist is sometimes in the foreground does not imply a victory over the others. The very concept of victory is meaningless here.At times, the soloist will fulfil a leadership role, at others he or she will underpin from passivity what is happening in the orchestra, intentionally from the shadows, as a grey eminence. And at other times - why not - he will question what the majority is doing.It is not a rough relationship of me against you, but there is also a we.The composition and orchestration of this piano concerto was made possible by a grant from the Senator for Culture of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. This work was funded by an artist's grant as part of the Bremen-Corona-Hilfen programme.The premiere by the orchestra of the Bremer Orchestergemeinschaft is scheduled for the beginning of 2024. David Fraserâ??s third composition is â??Sonata No.1 Gothicâ??, dedicated to Sergei Prokofiev, not as a representation of this genre of music, but in form. Specifically, Fraser uses a similar structure in Movement 1, starting at Measure 72 marked â??più mosso e con abbandonoâ?, to the notoriously difficult â??colossaleâ? section of Prokofievâ??s â??Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 16â??, Movement 1. The sonataâ??s Movement 3 also follows a structure parallel to Movement 4 of Prokofievâ??s aforementioned piano concerto, employing fiendishly challenging syncopated jumps in both hands. Written in ternary form, Movements 1 and 3 of Fraserâ??s sonata are in C minor; Movement 2 is in E-flat minor, instead of the expected relative or dominant key. This work has explosive sentiments of rage that elicit a sense of immensity and darkness, touching on the macabre yet maintaining an alluring nature. The inspiration for the second movement comes from the German fairy tale Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm. The music begins with Hansel and Gretel walking into the witchâ??s house made of gingerbread, cake, and candy. The children have a sense of unease and fright once they enter the house, which is demonstrated in the music by the eeriness and darkness of the harmonies. The term oscuro is found at the beginning of the music â?? this is the Italian word for dark. The repeat, which begins at measure 25, is marked sempre sotto voce which translates to always under the voice, meaning always in a hushed tonal quality and dynamic volume. This section represents the children trying to tip-toe out of the house without the witch taking notice. The repeat is almost identical to the beginning section, with the exception of measures 39 and 40 which have ties in the right hand; the similar measures 15 and 16 in the first section do not have these ties. The right-hand trills in measures 53 through 55 symbolize the children attempting to quietly turn a key to unlock the door, which would lead them to freedom.This is the full version of the Sonata, containing all three movements, and is the third piece from 'Hommages: Suite pour le Piano'. 39 pages. New Tango No. 1: Movement (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an abstract piece. Inspired by the tango, it invokes dance movement as well as explores movement in and out of time in the music. The soloist's part is entirely improvised. The rhythm section goes between time and free-time. The soloist cues the rhythm section on when to make time and harmonic changes. The background ensemble is in free-time with each note conducted. During solos the background ensemble can improvise interactions with the soloist. This piece is highly dependent upon the soloist and ensemble to bring the music to life and take the audience on a journey. Space and understatement are important features of this music. The open, floating free-time melody and the space between its phrases enable the rhythm section to have a prominent role in playing layers of lines, textures, and colors. Using accordion and guitar (along with piano, bass, and drums) is highly recommended. A string instrument(s) such as violin or cello can improvise additional layers with the rhythm section. One of my essential concepts in this piece is for the ensemble to have the sound of a tango band (as closely as possible); however, the music has a great amount of freedom. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music. Seen in this way, a concert reflects a value system that pits the individual against the group and poses a struggle of I against you. Surely this vehemence could be explained in a Beethovenian era when the concepts of human rights and individual freedom were fragile ideals.However, it is a different scale of values that my piano concerto tries to reflect: the idea of cooperation, of teamwork and of an orchestra as a living organism whose organs are not superior to one another, more vital than others, but fulfil different functions, qualitatively speaking.Every soloist plays a leading role, but this does not imply either subordination to the rest or denigration or subjugation of the rest. The fact that the soloist is sometimes in the foreground does not imply a victory over the others. The very concept of victory is meaningless here.At times, the soloist will fulfil a leadership role, at others he or she will underpin from passivity what is happening in the orchestra, intentionally from the shadows, as a grey eminence. And at other times - why not - he will question what the majority is doing.It is not a rough relationship of me against you, but there is also a we.The composition and orchestration of this piano concerto was made possible by a grant from the Senator for Culture of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. This work was funded by an artist's grant as part of the Bremen-Corona-Hilfen programme.The premiere by the orchestra of the Bremer Orchestergemeinschaft is scheduled for the beginning of 2024.
