It was natural for me to think about old-time fiddling in this light. In 1909 Washington Irving described the Catskill Mountains as a dismembered branch of the Appalachian Mountains. My own Dutch ancestors settled in the Hudson Valley in the early 1600â€™s, and eventually traveled down the Appalachians to settle in the South in the early 1800â€™s. The old-time fiddling that dominated those areas along that route is the musical language utilized in creating this String Quartet.For the musical genesis of the Quartet, I initially created phrases from the fiddle that were molded out of old-time fiddling tradition. With technical twists and turns, the phrases became unique and new but all the while still connected to the tradition. It is these phrases that I used as material to create the String Quartet. Through the process of composing, techniques such as re- harmonization, development, canonic applications spill over each other like the Hudson tributaries in the Adirondacks. The counterpoint of the Quartet invigorates and establishes itself. The result is a wholly participating body emphasizing transitions from the traditional to the contemporary in sound and style. The music here is no longer fiddle music as the inventions of the quartet embarks on a new story, a new way to play, and with a new musical idea to put forward. Viola Sonata No.1 â€œKangKangSullaeâ€ For Viola and Piano Sonata No. 1 has the name â€œKangKangSullaeâ€, and the composer is like any other composer. â€œWhat does it mean to be Korean music?â€ With the question, he is trying to compose such works. A Korean work means a work that contains Korean emotions and spirit, and the melody of â€œKangKangSullaeâ€ has been handed down through a long history to this day, so it can be said that it is a keepsake containing the soul of Korea. With this in mind, the theme of â€œKangKangSullaeâ€ was cited in the 4th movement, and it was named as a representative name for the sonata as an element that forms the basic character of this movement. For reference, the origin of â€œKangKangSullaeâ€ is from women's circular dance. It was because they valued the relationship between each other. They held hands, sang and danced, and it was a representative event to commemorate the full moon and the harvest. The first movement is in 6/8 time, and two contrasting themes, masculine and feminine, appear in normal sonata form. But, in this sonata, two contrasting themes, eastern and western, develop. The second movement crosses the natural harmonics of the violin and the normal playing method in 4/4 time, and expresses oriental excellence and emotion. The third movement is composed in a short ABA form with a humorous lightness and weight in 3/8 time. The fourth movement quoted the theme of â€œKangKangSullaeâ€ in 8/12 time, and was composed in the form of variations that change with various personalities, sometimes solemnly, sometimes sobbing, calmly, etc.

The Koreanâ€™s front yard is a friendly place for villagers' gatherings and events. 2nd mov. : Yeonzi â€“ Gonzi: In G major in 4/4 time, natural harmonics are used to express the mysterious oriental atmosphere. The meaning of â€œYeonji Gonjiâ€ is the red dot on the cheeks and forehead of the bride in a Korean traditional wedding ceremony. 3rd mov. : Joyful Dance: 3/4 time B flat major, composed in ABA form, expressed the joy of dancing in Korea. 4th mov. : Longing: In G minor in 6/4 time, tried to express the feeling of oriental waiting. 5th mov. : The Bride and Groom : It is composed of 4/4 time and 6/4 time, and as the title of the title of Groom and Bride, it shows the contrasting character of lively and calm. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.575837). Originally written for a Delian suite for various composers remembering Schoenberg back in 2006, I have now revised it and provided separate parts. The piece is atonal and satirically based on Twinkle twinkle little star by way of a supposed reaction from Pluto after it was relegated from planet to dwarf planet by astronomers here on earth. I wrote the following introduction for the Delian suite version: 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star' (Jane Taylor's poem used for the tune to the French song Ah, vous dirai-je maman) is given an atonal treatment, for string quartet, in memory of the 'lost' planet of Pluto. Of course Pluto is still there, merely changed in the human taxonomy, which deems it to be no longer a planet. Similarly Twinkle, Twinkle is no longer a nursery rhyme but a strange atonal piece with memories of its past self moving towards an unknown space. It will be curious to know at which age a child recognises the twinkle-twinkle motif in this new, totally untraditional version. However, atonal though it is, it still appears to have some kind of 'home.' 'Ah, vous dirai-je maman, ce qui cause mon tourment,' ce n'est plus la petite chanson d'enfants, elle s'en va vers les Ã©toiles dans un astronef de quatuor Ã cordes atonal. Son tourment?: Sa lamentation ne vise que la taxonomie humaine des planÃ¨tes-Pluton, tu n'est plus planÃ¨te? Maman! oÃ¹ se trouve la rÃ©alitÃ©, oÃ¹ se trouve notre domicile? The song is also known as O Waly, Waly which means something like â€œwoe is meâ€. For such an old song, it is not surprising that there are many variations of the lyrics. An early version of the modern lyrics was consolidated by the British folksong collector Cecil Sharp in 1906, using multiple older sources in southern England. There are many sets of lyrics with different story-lines. This was because in the past, performers would often create new lyrics for the song. This melody has attracted an entire family of lyrics many of which bear little relationship to each other. The words used in this choral arrangement reflect the popular lyrics used during the twentieth century.Â The song was arranged for voice and piano in 1948 by British composer Benjamin Britten but in more recent times, was made popular by many folk singers notably Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. It has become one of the most popular folk songs today, largely because of its beautiful tune. But as with the lyrics, there are many variations on the melody with the result that no single variation can be considered the â€œcorrectâ€ one.This SAB arrangement by Colin Kirkpatrick is ideal for high school or college choir, especially if the tenor/bass section is a bit low on numbers. Each section of the choir has the melody line at some point and there are attractive and evocative counter-melodies. In the soprano part (which has one brief divisi section), the highest note is G5 (which occurs only once and safely approached) and the highest note in the alto part is C5 (in the middle of the treble staff). The bartione part lies between A flat 2 (bottom space in bass clef) and D3 (just above the staff). The piano part is an integral part of the arrangement and therefore essential. The music begins in E flat and modulates to C major. Running at just over three minutes, the work is sure to be popular with choir and audiences alike.
